I hope we see some of them from Criterion soon.
All are definite buys from me as 4Ks. Well, maybe not MIDNIGHT EXPRESS, which has limited repeat value and CUCKOO'S NEST which disappointed me compared to the book.

MIDNIGHT EXPRESS does not hold up at all IMO. CUCKOO'S NEST is wonderful though.

I wonder if Gints Zilbalodis's first film "Away" will be a special feature on the Flow disc

Since the announcements could come on Friday ('though I think next Monday is most likely), I'm going to guess that the four other September releases are going to be:
Point Blank
House Party
Born in Flames
Kenji Misumi Sword Trilogy

I am guessing the Criterion extras will be broadly the same as those on the UK Curzon disc, minus the quiz and the paper extras for kids. No Away but his other shorts are there:

Quote:
Extras:
- Aqua - short film by Gints Zilbalodis
- Priorities - short film by Gints Zilbalodis
- Interactive Flow quiz
- Animatic version of Flow
- The animation of Flow - Blender Conference 2024
- Dream Cat - behind-the-scenes documentary
- Masterclass and Q&A with Gints Zilbalodis
- Oscars reaction video
- Trailers
Also the booklet in the UK 4K version described as "Booklet featuring a new essay by Michael Leader, an interview with Gints Zilbalodis, and a gallery of concept art for the film" which sounds suspiciously Criterion-y too. Maybe they are mirrored releases like used to happen a lot before Criterion came to the UK.

Awesome. I've been checking Film Forum's site daily for their new schedule. Definitely going to see as many of these as I can.

My boring and predictable guesses:

Captain Blood 4K
Christiane F. 4K
Flow 4K
Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Project 5 BD

High and Low 4K (upgrade)

EDIT: I'm going to scrap Captain Blood 4K for Say Anything 4K, and maybe the Martin Scorsese set for The Delta 4K or Lost in Translation 4K.

I’d love another WCP boxset. I have the first three. What likely candidates will the fifth one include?

A 4K restoration of Days and Nights in the Forest just premiered at Cannes.

I recall there being screenings for the following over the past few years, so a couple of these seem like likely candidates:

Eight Deadly Shots
El
The Fall of Otrar
Lumumba, Death of a Prophet
Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors
The Stranger and the Fog
World Festival of Black Arts newsreels
Yam Daabo

Xiao Wu (Pickpocket) will be released as part of an upcoming Jia Zhangke box set.

I'm not familiar with any of them. Perfect.

Did a quick read on Jia Zhangke and the Sixth Generation of Chinese filmmakers. I've only seen Zhang Yuan's East Palace, West Palace (which I would love a release of) and Wang Xiaoshuai's So Long, My Son (a devastating film on death and grief and parenthood).

IIRC, that’s the Ray title Wes Anderson said was on the way to Criterion.

Yes, that is more or less correct.

The only question that remains is will the film get a standalone release, or will it be part of a larger box set?

Here are all of the WCP films listed on the Film Foundation website:
  1. AFTER THE CURFEW - WCP 3
  2. AL MOMIA
  3. ALYAM, ALYAM
  4. BADOU BOY
  5. BLACK GIRL - standalone
  6. BOROM SARRET - extra on "Black Girl" release
  7. BOYS FROM FENGKUEI, THE
  8. BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY, A - standalone
  9. CAMP DE THIAROYE
  10. CHESS OF THE WIND - WCP 4
  11. CHRONICLE OF THE YEARS OF FIRE
  12. CLOUD-CAPPED STAR, THE - standalone
  13. CONTRAS' CITY
  14. DAYS AND NIGHTS IN THE FOREST
  15. DOS MONJES - WCP 3
  16. DOWNPOUR - WCP 3
  17. DRY SUMMER - WCP 1
  18. DUPES, THE
  19. EIGHT DEADLY SHOTS
  20. ÉL
  21. ELOQUENT PEASANT, THE
  22. ENAMORADA
  23. FALL OF OTRAR, THE
  24. FANTASMA DEL CONVENTO, EL - standalone by Powerhouse Films
  25. GHATASHRADDHA
  26. HOUSEMAID, THE - WCP 1
  27. IFE / 3ÈME FESTIVAL DES ARTS
  28. INSIANG - WCP 2
  29. KALPANA - WCP 4
  30. KUMMATTY
  31. LA FEMME AU COUTEAU
  32. LAW OF THE BORDER - WCP 2
  33. LE SÉNÉGAL ET LE FESTIVAL MONDIAL DES ARTS NÈGRES
  34. LIMITE - WCP 2
  35. LOS OLVIDADOS
  36. LUCIA - WCP 3
  37. LUMUMBA, DEATH OF A PROPHET
  38. MACARIO
  39. MANILA IN THE CLAWS OF LIGHT - standalone
  40. MARÍA CANDELARIA
  41. MEMORIES OF UNDERDEVELOPMENT - standalone
  42. MORTU NEGA
  43. MUNA MOTO - WCP 4
  44. MYSTERIOUS OBJECT AT NOON - WCP 2
  45. O REGRESSO DE AMÍLCAR CABRAL
  46. PICKPOCKET - part of upcoming Jia Zhangke Criterion box set
  47. PIXOTE - WCP 3
  48. PRISIONEROS DE LA TIERRA - WCP 4
  49. RAID INTO TIBET
  50. REDES - WCP 1
  51. REVENGE - WCP 2
  52. RIVER CALLED TITAS, A - WCP 1
  53. SAMBIZANGA - WCP 4
  54. SAYAT NOVA - standalone
  55. SÉNÉGAL AN XVI
  56. SHADOWS OF FORGOTTEN ANCESTORS
  57. SOLEIL Ô - WCP 3
  58. STARS IN BROAD DAYLIGHT
  59. STRANGER AND THE FOG, THE
  60. TAIPEI STORY - WCP 2
  61. THAMP
  62. TOUKI BOUKI - WCP 1 and then standalone release
  63. TRANCES - WCP 1 and then standalone release
  64. TREASURE, THE
  65. TWO GIRLS ON THE STREET - WCP 4
  66. VOYAGE AUX ANTILLES DU PRÉSIDENT SENGHOR
  67. YAM DAABO

33 of the 67 films have been released on domestic home video. 32 of them were released by Criterion and 1 was released by another studio. Of these 32, 24 of them were part of World Cinema Project box sets (not including the standalone re-releases of Touki Bouki or Trances), 1 will be part of an upcoming director box set, 6 were released as standalones, and 1 was released as an extra on a standalone.

I'm very curious about the criteria used to release these films a certain way.

I find it unlikely that any Satyajit Ray film would go in a general-interest box set like WCP - it would be like putting in a Kurosawa film - and there’s been no other news of other restorations that might constitute a Ray-centric box set. So my guess is this is headed straight to a stand-alone release. He’s just too much of a giant, a major part of film canon.

It was definitely a fun, if semi exhausting time, especially because they had a couple of their rarer and OOP discs available, as well as early purchase of all of their upcoming releases up to "The Big Heat" (and "Sorcerer" was completely sold out that Friday). Picked up "The Big Heat", "Wages of Fear" (to pass the time until "Sorcerer" is out) and "Killer of Sheep".

The Satyajit Ray boxsets I could see them doing are for the ones that are already linked together historically or thematically like:
  • Kolkata Trilogy
  • Teen Kanya (Three Daughters)
  • 2 Goopy Bagha films

However, it always confused me that Criterion broke up The Coward and The Holy Man since they were also linked by their Bengali titles (Kapurush O Mahapurush) as well as being released in theaters on the same day. I always watched them together growing up. However, I suppose there is not much commercial interest in a standalone release for those two specific films.

I just want to see my favorites restored and released before my parents, especially my father are gone.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, unfortunately my friend had obligations in the morning and we were going to head out right before Criterion posted. I had no idea they were going to sell upcoming, and if I knew Sorcerer was going to be included I would have taken a day off from work on Friday. Oh, well. You got some great titles and it sounds like it was worthwhile.
