Both THIEVES AFTER DARK and STREET OF NO RETURN were made in France but with English dialogue. I don't know if either of them ever got much, if any, US theatrical distribution but they have been screened at cinematheques and film festivals. I saw STREET OF NO RETURN as well as WHITE DOG and some other Fuller films at a film festival with Fuller in attendance.

Fuller was a fascinating storyteller in person. No idea how accurate those stories were, but they sure were good stories! WHITE DOG was worth seeing, especially as an anti-racist film (exactly the opposite of how it was treated on initial US release) but STREET OF NO RETURN was pretty meh to me. Might feel different if I saw it again, but it was obviously a pretty low budget production.

Ahh I see, thanks. I pulled up a list and watched way more than I thought I did, everything from Steel Helmet through White Dog (except Verboten! and Shark I never saw). Solid filmography, no turkeys from what I saw anyway.

Edit: wait I did watch Verboten!, I totally forgot about it. I thought that was good too. I'm gonna have to go through all these again.

I have no idea what you're talking about ..You know, I've never really thought about it, but it is strange the u is dropped in forty. It looks wrong the more you look at it. Doing brief research on the origins, it apparently used to be spelled fourty before the 1600's but the u was later dropped, possibly due to it being spelled forty in the King James Bible.

Yeah, I really liked his selections, and the personal anecdotes he had to say about them. Made me want to revisit Late Spring right away. Seems like a very chill and down to earth guy too.

Coogler’s the real deal and watching him discuss his influences makes me sad he’s returning to Marvel-ville next. But maybe he’ll be able to pull something out for BP3 that is interesting.

It felt very personal, right? I just watched Late Spring for the first time, and his thoughts there particularly resonated.

I was impressed that this new closet video was a hugely long 8 minutes. I love that he talked about films he loves that came out when he was growing up and then totally switched it up with Ozu and Kurosawa.

Is there any chance of Criterion remastering Raise The Red Lantern? I know they did Farewell My Concubine last year, and recently the 4K came out. But man you cannot get that first title anywhere unless you get the DVD. It's a good movie and very rare, surprised they have not picked it up.

They have, it played some festival screenings late last year. I assumed they'll do a theatrical tour first. Don't know why that hasn't happened yet.

Thanks! This one is definitely on my radar when the 4K drops.

I assume some posts have been deleted - thread seems shorter than I remember. So, Criterion announcements on a Sunday or more likely Monday, a day after they traditionally hit on the 15th?
