I'm just wondering out loud if Criterion has any plans to release a box set of Bertolucci's films, preferably on Blu-ray. It's happened before with other directors. Just last year, there was a big retrospective of Akira Kurosawa's films and, soon thereafter Criterion released a big box of all his films it had rights to (granted the box was in SDVD only). The year before that an unforgettable epic trilogy of Japanese films from the late 1950s and early 1960s called The Human Condition was re-released in theaters and then was subsequently released on home video by Criterion (again in SDVD only).

So, the thought of Criterion releasing a box of Bertolucci's films may very well be wishful thinking. But, the prints I saw at MoMA's series were all new and restored and all distributed by the same company, Cinecita. Also, Criterion already has Bertolucci's The Last Emperor on Blu-ray. Further, the director's Last Tango in Paris will soon be out on Blu from MGM, many films of which Criterion has recently been steadily releasing to Blu as of late.

Given all this, maybe a Criterion box of Bertolucci is possible. It was a nice experience to both rewatch on the big screen films I'd seen before and discover new ones. I would hope the box would include all the films I saw at the retrospective...

The Last Emperor
The Grim Reaper
Luna
Novecento (1900)
The Sheltering Sky
Before the Revolution
The Dreamers
Stealing Beauty

...plus all the other films in the retrospective, including Last Tango in Paris, which I've seen before on TV.

BTW, I enjoyed all the films I saw at the retrospective, but especially The Last Emperor (it just never gets old or anything less than fascinating no matter how many times I see it); Luna (I enjoyed this engrossing, operatic drama more than I thought I would); Novecento (another sprawling period masterpiece, much longer than even The Last Emperor, but it never felt long); The Sheltering Sky (for its look at contrasting cultures); Before the Revolution (for its very new wave style, reminiscent of Truffaut's The 400 Blows); and The Dreamers (I appreciated the film even more during this viewing, my second time seeing it on the big screen). Bertolucci is definitely one of film's greatest artists and storytellers.
There was talk a (long) while back about Before The Revolution being released by Criterion, but nothing seems to have happened with that (at least so far). I've been on the verge of watching it for a while now, probably just holding back in anticipation of Criterion putting it out, but the longer it doesn't happen...

I'm a big fan of The Sheltering Sky, though I don't know how it stacks up to the novel (one of the few novels I've procured based on curiosity about such), would love to see a blu-ray of that. (However, Warner probably will just sit on it forever, most likely.)

And one that seems to have disappeared from the radar is The Spider's Strategem, never quite made the transition to dvd (New Yorker seems to have had it out on VHS at one point; I saw it once back in the day on CBS Cable and vaguely recall liking it well enough).

Hope your theory of a Criterion Bertolucci box set pans out, or even just a single title for that matter.

The Italian English-friendly DVD release by Ripley (RHV) is superb, but a Blu-ray release will be very, very special:

Last Tango in Paris is coming out in February:

Unfortunately, one or more of the items that you ordered has been cancelled either at your request or because the item(s) are not available.

Just got an email from Borders canceling my order for The Man Who Fell to Earth

That stinks, I just ordered one also. Guess only a matter of time before they release the charge and send me the same email.

Oh Well!

Have you tried contacting Criterion directly? It is possible they still have some digipacks laying around. Wouldn't surprise me at all.

I looked on the web a few weeks back, and couldn't find anything recent. Would be nice if they did put out code on a regular basis.

Sorry to hear that. It was probably a mistake on their website. I know it was out of stock for a long time on their website with the listing even taken off so I was surprised they actually had it back in stock considering it's OOP. Either that, or the resellers got to it quickly.

Borders is practically in bankruptcy. They probably didn't have (or ran out of) stock and Criterion or whoever they're buying the titles from probably refused to ship to them because they're afraid that they're not going to get paid.

I'm kind of doubting that they had any in the first place too.

I get that message no matter what I order from them. lol It seems to be standard practice for them. Always inviting the customer to cancel the order...

This sucks that Fear and Loathing is coming out so soon after I got the original Blu for Christmas, if I only waited a little longer!

Yup, that's the dvd I've been about to watch any day now. [Actually started watching it a month or so ago, but wasn't in the right frame of mind at the time.] Maybe today.
