I'm not a huge fan of it either. Bertolucci has made far greater films: Last Tango In Paris and The Conformist for sure, even La Commare Secca and The Dreamers. Can't stand the 5 hour cut of 1900, though.

Random question, why does The Night of the Hunter have a higher price?

It is a 2-disc release. Criterion releases with 2 discs go up in SRP by 10 dollars.

I kind of like 2-disc editions on BD. They used to come out often with DVD, but not often with BD. As a collector, I just like the packaging.

It could because these days people have such a hard time accepting and sitting down and watching a movie with a much slower pace. The last 20 years it's been all about fast cut editing and fast moving action. The crowd just got use to it. I make posts over in the movie reviews, I like watching much older movies and in recent weeks I have been on a Kenji Mizoguchi craze of sort. I find myself always warning people about the slow pace and really I should not even mention it. You cannot force people to like something. My good friend (he is like a second brother to me) cannot for the life of him watch movies of that type, he will just fall asleep and he is not a young guy who grew up with video games and such. It just how certain people are.

Still I agree with you that a lot of people love to throw the "you can't watch older movies " comments way to often. Maybe it's making them feel superior, who can say?

I happen to prefer the "classical" pacing of films from 50-60 years ago. There's a charm in them. Any time I see a Billy Wilder film I just think of how impossible it would be for a comedy to exceed 2 hours in Hollywood today (the studios would never allow it). Wilder regularly did it. Granted, Wilder (and Brackett, Diamond) were geniuses.

Movies from the '40s and '50s seem shorter to me, particularly film noirs. I remember William Goldman said something similar, and that a lot movies these days try to pass off length as weight.

Apatow does.

I like them. They're like John Hughes movies for adults.

Apatow's films he directs or produces usually are at least tolerable. Knocked Up and David Gordon Green's Pineapple Express are both pretty excellent.

Also got paid and dropped $40 on a sealed copy of Pierrot Le Fou. Better now than when they start going for $100 like The Third Man, ha.

That was at a nearby Borders a couple of weeks ago when I was perusing Criterions for the 50% off sale, and I find myself thinking I made a mistake not picking it up.

Even if I didnt love the movie I would seek it out because its rare and because the artwork is some of my favorite from Criterion.

Ahhhh, it doesn't necessarily apply to this particular situation, you do have the mentality of "one of those people," huh?

For some, $40 is reasonable price for a piece of "art"

For them it's a bonus if you get to watch a movie too.

I'd imagine a sealed Third Man could eventually top out at around $200-250. Back in the day Salo would fetch that easily and that film doesn't have the broader appeal of Reed's film.
