I think Blow Out is Brian DePalma's greatest film. It's also the finest performance ever given by Travolta.

I saw it in the theaters in 1981, and it was a searing experience. Don't know if it'll hold up, but I imagine it would. It's rather sad, to say the least. I'm not sure how many times I'd rewatch it, but it's definitely a classic.

Nice review today:

A lot of people like to compare Brian De Palma's Blow Out to Alfred Hitchcock's films and Michelangelo Antonioni's Blow-Up, but the film has its own identity and unique message. There are terrific subtexts in it that accurately reflect America's obsession with political scandals, conspiracies, and violence. On the other hand, it is an impressive, and very entertaining, study of idealism gone wrong. As expected, Criterion's Blu-ray release of Blow Out is of exceptionally high quality. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Even for Criterion this one is packed full of extras: hour long interview with the director, half hour interview with Allen, a whole bonus film by the very young depalma in hd, etc., etc.

I may need to buy this one.

Ditto. If nothing else, I'd love to at least have the cover as a poster.

I'm in for it, Criterion or not. I've got it on DVD (anchor bay or blue underground maybe?) To coincide with your desire for criterion to release films that don't have releases, they could go after CHUD 2: bud the CHUD. It's got absolutely nothing to do with the first, but it's only on VHS for stupid money. That and the video dead need some disc love, Blu or not.

Not Criterion-related, but film-related with a dash of Netflix...

Before I contact Netflix, I'm hoping that some other Netflix streamers out there will take the time to verify something for me (I'm looking at you, rkish).

I just finished streaming Abbas Kiarostami's "Shirin," which I found to be a great exercise in film, on Netflix. Anyway, according to Cinema Guild's DVD release, the film's aspect ratio is 1.85:1 and DVDBeaver's review lists the film at 1.78:1. So, from this information we know the film should be in a widescreen format. However, my Netflix stream had the film in some kind of cropped 1.33:1 aspect ratio with the subtitles partially off-screen, at times, on the bottom and left. My TV settings are correct, so I'm just hoping that someone else out there can confirm one way or another that their streaming of the film is the same as what I saw on my TV. Thanks.

I don't know what to tell you... on my T.V. (I may have not noticed it on my Projector due to to overscan) it appears that there is a 3/4" black border around the entire screen..... not just the left/right Actually, (more apparent in the beginning credits due to the bright backgrounds) I would say that the border on the L/R is probably 1/4" wider than the borders on the Top/Bottom.....

It's certainly not 1.33:1 though..... but it's a very odd ratio, as if it was something else just zoomed in

The subtitles always remained on the screen though.

Thanks for the info, Beta. I just played a bit of the film on my laptop and it appears just like you described, with the borders on all four sides. So, I don't know what the problem was with the stream through my PS3. It's the first time I've encountered such a problem with streaming any of the films from Netflix.

Agree, Murder a la Mod is still the main reason I plan on buying this someday.

I haven't tried that film specifically, but I have had a similar problem with a couple other films, with the subtitles being cut off. I always stream Netflix through my Xbox.

Can't wait for Blow Out now. I've been anticipating it since it was announced, and it's also great to have Murder a la Mod on the disc as well.

Indeed, I'm curious to know your impressions for both Murder a la Mod (on Blow Out) and Cathy Come Home (on Kes) if you don't mind, Pro-B.
