Off-topic, I ordered the Kenneth Anger BFI last night and it shipped (or should I say "dispatched" from the UK). I can't wait to watch these films in HD.
Congrats, Spider - you appeared to order it in the nick of time, as it's no longer available on Amazon.

But the film's lush cinematography and Carl Davis' lovely score would certainly benefit from the Criterion treatment. Any word?
There has been no word since then.

I'm curious if Red River will ever make it into the collection. . .

One of the reasons I love the 2003 Peter Pan is because it's true to the story being Wendy's story. And yet I still love the 1953 Disney version, which is more about Peter. Go figure.

Tomorrow I'm having my first day off in about 2 months.

I'll be spending the afternoon mixing up Pegu Club cocktails and watching "The Double Life of Véronique" on my projector.

It will be pure bliss!

Maybe I'm off base, but who really cares if a film follows the original story exactly? People are dumping on the Disney version, why? Because it changes themes and adds characters? I'm not defending it, I think it's perfectly passable as entertainment, but lots of people loved the story AS THEY TOLD IT, and I recall was nominated for Best Picture. The Cocteau version is amazing, but if you want the story, read the story.

Film and literature are different mediums, and nothing is going to be exact. And things get rebooted/retooled/updated/etc all the time, so really, who cares?

That's strange. They should of had a "1 copy left" when I ordered it then. It's still cheap on the Amazon uk marketplace though.

Anybody seen the new/upcoming J.P. Melville film and care to comment on it? I've never heard of it. :x

Exactly. Up to a point, if you took a (hyperbole on max output) anti-nazi book and turned it into Triumph of the Will, I can see some if not most having issues with it...

This whole topic started when someone posted 'B&TB, really?' which I think most of us took to mean that Criterion was off-base for releasing this title. I think, conjecturing here, that someone thought that the OP was confusing or otherwise associating the '46 film with the animated version.

Of course, everyone has their own opinion, but the Cocteau film was one of my most anticipated re-releases and, IMHO, a great example of what Criterion "should be doing" (extra starch).

#22 Summertime
#29 Picnic At Hanging Rock

I'm betting that Salò, Picnic at Hanging Rock, and maybe even A Night To Remember are very close.
The Lady Vanishes needs to be done asap. In my opinion its Hitchcock's best film. Picnic would also be a very welcome upgrade. I don't see what the big deal about Salo is. I saw it a few years ago and saw no redeemable value to it at all. Plus is there really any re-watch value for Salo?

Next year it's the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. I hope Criterion is paying attention and reissue A Night To Remember

I saw Salo many years ago and I'm glad I've seen it.
But frankly I would never watch it again.
Why would anyone want to see this film more than once?

I am watching my BD of Army of Shadows, and have been paying close attention to the colors. Almost ever shot has a strong blueish grey tint to it. (even shots that blue is not dominant, something blue is there such as smoke, clothing, ect...) This is the kind of subliminal visual that can really add a strong foundation to your production design, and it gives the film a cold, stark feel.

More Yasujiro Ozu Dual Format Edition Releases from the BFI

I was hoping to see some Ozu from Criterion, but might have to pick up some of these BFI's instead.
