I'd argue that the other way too... Why do these sales come up when I have a little cash but I wanted to put that cash towards the new projector fund!

Well I just placed an order for Kes & Blow Out. I would have ordered Le Cercle Rougge, but I had just placed an order for it a few hours before the sale from an Amazon 3rd party seller who was selling his "once viewed copy" for $22.45..aghhhhh, If I only waited a few more hours. FML!!!!!!

That's a third party seller. you have to go into the used/new for amazon's price. It's still 17.99 (or at least it was half an hour ago when I ordered it )

I went back for Blow Out and of course had to add The Leopard because $21.49 is so much cheaper than just paying the three bucks for shipping.

That's an excellent price for The Leopard, and if I hadn't picked it up during the Facebook sale for 24.99--also a great deal--I'd have been all over that. One of my favorite Criterion packages.

I have this to say to the good folks at amazon and Criterion:

"You maniacs! You blew it up!" (My credit card bill, that is..) "Darn you! Darn you all to heck!"

with apologies and thanks to Chuck Heston and Alex the Lion in Madagascar:

I had it in my hands during last fall's 50% sale and during one of their coupon sales a couple months ago so it was only a matter of time (and not very much time, as it turned out) when I saw that it had been added to the sale after I placed my morning order.

Lot of blind buys today (most of America Lost and Found, Kes, White Material and now The Leopard) but I'm pretty confident I'll ultimately be pleased with the price/payoff ratio.

This is now my second Eclipse set. I'll buy these slowly, as I persuade myself to buy some DVDs...mostly ones that don't seem destined for blu.
Strangely, I got that British Melville feeling when watching League of gentlemen. You know, I only have a few of the Eclipse sets, as my tastes dictate what I want. With all your Ozu love, you should be primed for set #3 or 10. It's too bad BFI didn't put out any Dearden on blu, as they seem to have many films of the same UK genre in their blu catalog.

I love it when Criterions go on sale. It's like a feeding frenzy in the hot deals thread. I'll bet the sale thread will be busy next week...

that one fooled me, and I've been telling people about the promoted sellers.
that's a perfect example of a seller taking advantage of what looks like a price amazon would use, and he got me too.
(I mean I thought the price had gone back up)
people REALLY need to become aware that whatever price you see first may not be amazon anymore.
the whole practice is really abhorrent imo.

I don't think it's so much a bait-and-switch as a side-effect of running out of stock.

yeah some people feel the "promoted" links only come be the main link when amazon is out of stock, but I feel like I've seen them when amazon did have stock also. so I'm not totally convinced that is always the case.
btw: I placed an order for 4 titles 3 hours before a friend earlier today, and his order has already shipped and mine still hasn't. all my titles showed in stock when I ordered, but I think one is holding th whole order up.

(Although I may change my mind and cancel a couple of these -- my wallet can take only so much -- or maybe I won't cancel anything ) my complete list from this sale currently includes Yojimbo & Sunjuro, The Leopard, Fish Tank, Broadcast News, Modern Times, Amarcord, The Seventh Seal, The Double Life of Veronique, Kes*, Le Cercle Rouge* and White Material*. The ones with an asterisk (*) are, effectively, exchanges for purchases of the same titles I bought at a higher price within the past 30 days. I encourage anyone who bought such titles to place a new order for the same titles at their current, lower price then, after it arrives, send back the unwanted copy by placing a return request under the order that contains the original, more expensive item.

Also due from my preorders this week is a title that was in this sale: Blow Out. The etailer's price guarantee will ensure that the price I pay on that title is no more than the lowest (i.e., today's) price.

I have a hunch this is Amazon's way of selling titles it has in stock that may not have been moving as quickly as it wanted, either in regular sales or through preorders -- not that any of the titles on this list are anything less than remarkable or undeserving of healthy sales by any stretch of the imagination. I also have a hunch that this little sale that inspired so much impromptu buying will end very, very soon. Probably by the end of the evening. So, if you've been thinking of buying any of the titles on this list, act now. You may need to wait a few days longer than usual to receive some of them due to backorder status. But it's so obviously worth it.

I still wish a few others had been part of that sale. Cronos would've been terrific, as would Last Year at Marienbad, Seven Samurai, Kagemusha, The Darjeeling Limited, House, The Magician, Charade, Everlasting Moments, Summer Hours, El Norte, Black Narcissus, Antichrist, A Christmas Tale and The Complete Monterey Pop Festival. Some of these titles just never seem to drop in price. But, hey, you can't have everything, right?

I'd like to add emphasis to those who've already encouraged people to buy America Lost and Found: the BBS Story. At this price it really is a steal. If you've ever thought about checking it out, just buy it. It's seven films with the best picture and sound transfers they'll ever see in the forseeable future, with a wealth of supplements and compelling packaging. All for $53 -- or $7.57 per film. Several of the films are considered landmarks of the medium (e.g., The Last Picture Show, Five Easy Pieces and, of course, Easy Rider).

In any case, seeing these prices today was a pleasant surprise for many Criterion fans, I'm sure.
