Jon Mulvaney must be some kind of term for their customer service of several workers, I can't see one guy taking care of it all, Criterion being such a large company and all.

just home from work and i am surprised to see no one discussing the current facebook/60,000 fans contest. here's the rundown:

To celebrate crossing 60,000 fans, we're giving you the chance to win one of sixty $25 gift certificates.

The rules are simple:

Pick one Criterion title you deem absolutely essential and paste the URL of its Criterion.com film page to our Facebook wall. Then, in one sentence, convince us why yours is the one indispensable title in the collection. Please begin your entry with "MY ESSENTIAL CRITERION:" (We've included an example below)

We're going to let this run through Monday, at which time we'll pick sixty winners. You can enter only once (multiple entries will be disqualified) so choose wisely. Good luck!

you do have to have a Facebook to do this. if you need an idea of what it should look like, head on over to the Criterion page as it is littered with them.i have no idea how they are gonna go thru them all. ol CG and myself have both posted ours. maybe we'll win some for the home team.

I'm not a fan of Criterion's Facebook page at all. It reminds me how mainstream they are now, which makes me happy, but also very depressed. Already there are hundreds, if not thousands of replies to that contest, every Criterion post is "liked" by hundreds of people, etc.

i hear ya. it's that age-old conundrum where you love a band that no one has heard of and you want them to succeed but then when people discover them you feel like you lost your secret, plus there's that "everyone that just now started liking this band sucks" feeling, which is almost always true.

there is, indeed, a great deal of awfulness on there and i personally would rather them save their "wall" for just their posts, but it's led to some kinda cool behind the scenes stuff, plus one of the best discounts i have ever received (all the march, april and may pre-orders at 50%), so i'll take the bad to keep getting some good.

I'm reminded of the "good ol days" when instead of official "pages" there were only user-created "groups". I was one of the 400 or so proud members of "Criterion Collection 4 Life, Motha****a".

I've been a Criterion fan for years now, I just couldn't afford their releases before now, as the DVDs were astronomical in price, and still are in Canada (Seriously, Fear and Loathing is like 10 bucks more on DVD right now than the BD at Future Shop).

I was so giddy when I found a used copy of the single disc edition of Brazil for 10 bucks at a Rogers Video store in London, Ontario when I was doing my MLIS.

I have a friend who has wanted to buy Criterion releases for awhile, but was holding off for price drops on the DVDs, and was debating on waiting until they bought a Blu-Ray player. I think some of these people were fans, and loved the releases, but perhaps were waiting for the price drops or a newer video format.

I think it's good that Criterion has become so popular, as their prices have made it more accessible for anyone to buy their films, and get to experience so many great films. I do think the Facebook page is bad though. I'm a "fan" but I still dislike Facebook in general.

More interesting on the Criterion Facebook page were these two items:

1. The link to the New York Times summer DVD guide listing what appear to be three of Criterion's August releases

2. Amazon mentioning that their sale goes on through this weekend
True, although if you go to the NYTimes article there are only two titles. One of the titles listed as an August Criterion title (in the Facebook post) is coming out in July, at least according to the author of the article.

In other words, the article is either wrong about the date or wrong about it being a Criterion title.

Care to tell those of us who don't want to sign up to the NYTimes what the titles are?

True. My point is just that the article didn't really reveal anything, since it discusses titles that we know are coming, and has at least one of the dates wrong, so who knows if they are even August titles.

You should be able to see the titles if you follow the links, but here they are:
[Show spoiler]
Cocteau's Orpheus
Complete works of Vigo, including L'Atlante
Polanski's Cul-de-sac

I'm not sure how this became a disagreement...I was just pointing out that the article has some errors in it, which means we can't be certain of what it says until Criterion announces things in a couple of weeks. Sorry if you thought I was attacking you

On another note, does anyone know anything about any blu ray release of 2046? I wonder if this would be a possible Criterion release. I couldn't find anything about a potential release by anyone. I actually haven't seen the movie, but it definitely looks intriguing.

It's not in HD John...but I believe it's in the proper aspect ratio.

I didn't get a chance to watch more than the beginning of it (family interruptions), but it looked pretty good. At least a way to view the film and decide if it's worth an investment.

I keep wavering back and forth about buying Fish Tank. I need a push one way or the other.

I keep wondering how I will like the part of the film
[Show spoiler]when the older boyfriend has sex with the girl. It could be an important plot point that sends her into a different direction. Or it might just be creepy.
