$63.92 for 4 Criterions, At first they sent me an e-mail saying my credit card had expired. I was like WTF? I put 2012 as the expiration year. A few minutes later I received an e-mail saying it was processed, hmm.

Newsletter going out today, and it's not a Tuesday, so it very well might be a clue one.

I think it comes out around the same if this promotion overlaps the 50% off Criterion sale in July (with no coupons).
The current B&N coupons (meaning after the last Criterion sale), though, are worded differently. I think this change was applied due to all of the activity during the last sale.

Completely off topic, so I apologize...but I was just over at Criterionforum.org and holy crap I thought this thread could be a little rough at times!

There's a whole thread of 90+ pages where these guys go to Amazon and imbd and pick reviews that people wrote and trash 'em like there's no tomorrow!!

Talk about not having a life!!

And to actually bring this post back on topic...I watched Le cercle rouge last night and it was incredible! I did, however, enjoy Army of Shadows more, but cercle had me on the edge of my seat for about the entire 2:20 runtime! The heist scene was basically silent which I thought added to the tension. Loved the characters as well. The scene in the train at the beginning, the scene where Vogel hides in the trunk, and the heist were all classic!

Now I must see more Melville!!

The only thing I can think of is Val Lewton's Cat People. If that is the case, I would love to see a box set of all his films.

It's right up Criterion's alley (the 80's version). I could actually see both being released (like The Killers).

The Schrader version makes sense since they have put out other movies by him. I wouldn't mind seeing both, especially since I would argue that Val Lewton definitely deserves to be in the collection.

Glad to read about Melville - get a copy of Le Deuxieme Souffle (DVD only I'm afraid) if you can; that's damn good. Have you seen Rififi - the heist scene in that is magnificent as well.

I'm going to guess Jacques Tourneur's Cat People for today's clue.

Plot summary from IMDB...

"Irena Dubrovna, a beautiful and mysterious Serbian-born fashion artist living in New York City, falls in love with and marries average-Joe American Oliver Reed. Their marriage suffers though, as Irena believes that she suffers from an ancient curse- whenever emotionally aroused, she will turn into a panther and kill. Oliver thinks that is absurd and childish, so he sends her to psychiatrist Dr. Judd to cure her. Easier said than done... Written by Ken Yousten <kyousten@bev.net>"

I have not seen those yet. My introduction to a lot of these directors has been on the BD format, so I will need to search on Netflix (while they're still available) or Blockbuster online (mailings) to find these other films.

Thanks for the rec!

Three Criterions for $34 ain't bad.

($39.99 * 0.9 * 0.9 * 0.5) = $16.20 (10% Classcode, 10% Membership, 50% Member Coupon)
($39.99 * 0.9 * 0.9 * 0.5) = $16.20 (10% Classcode, 10% Membership, 50% Non-Member Coupon)

Third title you get free.

$32.40 * 1.0625 (MA Sales Tax) = $34.43.
~11.48 per Criterion.

I think it comes out around the same if this promotion overlaps the 50% off Criterion sale in July (with no coupons).
I'm sure I have not seen these 50% off member coupons you speak of. B&N on-line prices for most single disc Criterion blu-ray are running at $35.99, however I was referring to the $39.99 in-store price in my earlier post. If I remember correctly the last time I ordered B&N on-line was the last 50% off Criterion sale and I cannot recall exactly how the charges ran but it seems to me I was charged sales tax and either I was granted my 10% off member discount but had to pay for shipping or it was I got free shipping but not my 10% discount and got nicked for sales tax. Buying in-store I got my 10% discount on top of the 50% off but had to pay sales tax and of course no shipping at the $39.99 price-point - and I did have to drive out to the store. So all-in-all, for me at least, when it comes to the 3-for-2 deal, I think I'm better off with Amazon unless the B&N 50% off sale is going on.

Good Call. If you look at the images link on google for the film, there are several images of her in a strap dress like the CC cartoon.

Vigo's films I guess, are more about the style really (which isn't a bad thing, Soviet films of that time are praised for that and others like Bunuel). You'll hear the films are like poetry really. Cocteau is a good comparison for that.

L'Atalante being the popular film (infuenced future French filmmakers), the shorts are more than interesting (Zéro de conduite is the next highlight, though I very much like À propos de Nice. Haven't seen Taris.). He is a important figure to discover, so you won't lose out if you buy this, and could very well be the release of the year (but that Music Room release is making me think twice.). Without all the love for people's fav films (Kubrick's The Killing, etc), Criterion has released some important films for the U.S. to see (People on Sunday, this Vigo set, and The Music Room), so it isn't just my 3 fav releases of the year so far for no reason.
