According to another article, the film was put together from outtakes from three other films. Perhaps that is why it isn't worth more.

Here is the article I read:

Ahhhh...well that explains the low value.

Still though, it would be a nice find and certainly worth at least 1 million $$$. That really isn't much money these days, and no matter how the film was assembled, it doesn't take away from the historical value this holds.

I love reading stories about things like this. It gives me hope that some of the other lost treasures out there will still be found. I think we all probably dream of stumbling on some rare piece at a garage sale or something similar and being able to return a piece of art to the world. And the money would be nice too

Remember that purchasing the film at auction doesn't necessarily give you the rights to the film. And even if does because the film is determined to be in the public domain, if you issued it publicly, anyone else could copy it and issue it again, as with any public domain work, unless you changed it in some way (say by adding narration or music) that would grant it a new copyright.

And..if it's a vintage print, it's on nitrate stock, which means you can't project it and it has to be handled really carefully. I believe the only place in the U.S. that is permitted to project nitrate films is at USC (or maybe it's UCLA), which has a specially protected projection booth in case of a fire. It's amazing that it hasn't deteriorated into dust.

But yes, still a very important find.

That was my thought as well, especially when the article mentions that they unrolled it to look at it. In a way it reminds me of the story about Passion of Joan of Arc, albeit on a much smaller scale.

I've got 4 Devils(Murnau), London After Midnight(Lon Chaney), The Mountain Eagle(Hitchcock) and the uncut The Magnificent Ambersons(Welles) all on sale on Ebay. Starting bid $1.00 !!! Only accept Paypal!

Seriously it’s amazing a film this old could survive without literally exploding. It really gives us hope that more lost films will be found.

DVDBeaver have detailed People on Sunday, and though it looks good it's disappointingly presented in 1080i. I suspect as with other European silents the restored master may have been delivered at 25p/50i, and Criterion decided to do a conversion to 60i instead of slowing it down to 24p, or better, extracting the original silent framerate (probably around 18fps) and creating a new, true 24p master by repeating the frames.

Either way I think I may pass on it for now. Maybe BFI will release it on Blu-ray as well, and they have the option to keep it at 50i if the above was indeed the case.

I'm only 16 and probably 40% of the movies I tend to watch are over 50 years old

Well considering this is the 1st Criterion release I will buy this year, and the fact I would buy this if it was dvd-only, I can't wait.

P.S., if anybody gives this film a bad review because of it being 1080i, I will seriously punch them in the face. Right in the face.

Well, we need to admit that no one is all the time in the mood to watch art cinema. I personally love it but a film collection must have titles you can also share with your girlfriend or your friends. None of my friends like to watch films like "Andrei Rublev" or "The 400 Blows" even thought I love those films (Still need to get "The 400 Blows" in BD thought, my DVD must be enough at the time )

That doesn't really mean much. Things are getting better but older films are still way too underrepresented on blu.

I'm 32, but don't think I've ever prefaced it with "Only"

I'm 20, and all my friends basically hate the movies I like. No surprise.

Yeah I need to start buying more classics on blu. I usually just watch them on netflix or tv since I don't buy a ton of movies.

25 going on 26 here. TCM is pretty much the only reason why I have basic digital cable, even though they don't show the same stuff up here in Canada. It's totally random what they show too, something that was on last month will be subbed out as they miracuously no longer have the rights to it, but MPIX or craptastic silver screen (which I don't get either of) will show it 24/7. Grr. I do find it amusing that as soon as I order a movie on DVD/Blu-Ray, TCM decides they're going to show it.

Amazon has me befuddled again. DHL's saying my order from Friday, which includes Bigger than Life and Au Revoir Les Enfants, is now in Illinois, and has been sitting there since yesterday, and that was the only time it moved, despite Amazon saying it shipped on Friday. On the other hand, my Monterey Pop set is being shipped via UPS Express, despite me selecting standard shipping, and will most likely be here Friday. WTS is Amazon doing with their orders? I'm not complaining about MP getting here early, but I am concerned about the other order since it's been a week, and the CUPW are most likely going to strike at 23:59 today.
