I don't know what you mean but "supposedly", OOP doesn't mean all stock magically disappears everywhere.

But no it's not http://www.amazon.com/Third-Man-Blu-...8094159&sr=8-1 that's their price but they're out of stock, the next available one is $44

Would anyone suggest I return my MP for the Complete set? I passed on the J&O disc because I didn't feel it was strong enough to support it's own, but I wouldn't mind it with the set.

Also, something I noticed on the Jimi & Otis is it lists the original release dates as 1986 instead of 68 as the Monterey Pop disc says. Is this an error or were those shows put out much later?
Hi Seasick Pirate, Yeah I would return it for the complete set. I don't have it but I read reviews that the Blu-ray for Hendrix/Otis is good but all the special features on the Monterey disc. But if you want the Monterey disc and want Hendrix/Otis...might as well get the complete set.

I think that's the issue of what people consider art. "In the Realm of Senses", people considered it as art for its use of sexual imagery and love for sex versus love for each other. Whereas "Salo", I read is the degradation of sex. Although I suppose when you think about it, both films have different ways of interpreting sex as pain but I can't comment since I haven't had the guts to watch "Salo" just yet.

"Salo" is considered art and I think it goes beyond the film, wouldn't you say it's also the man behind the film...Pasolini?

But I can't really comment on "Salo" as much as I've wanted to try and watch it...I couldn't for the life of me do it.

Thanks for the greeting and suggestion.
The more I think about it, the more the Jimi & Otis shows get enticing. There's a good chance I'll be heading in first thing in the morning to pick up the full set.

This also helps, but my math may be off at this hour. Tell me if I'm getting this right but the set, MSRP $80 minus 50% Criterion sale, minus 10% member's discount, minus 25% coupon brings it all down to $23.62. That sounds like a deal to me!

=

Interesting to note that if it was a total of 85% off the MSRP it would come to about $10.50, but I doubt that's how they calculate their discounts.

With "Salo", I look at it this way: like in autobiographical literature, some stories of a single protagonist in the novel is an amalgam of different people -- a collective of experiences so that the horror/joy/pain can transcend the words. In this case, having it intense allows the horror of that time in history to transcend film and literally bring you into the narrative and the story... it's like old school 3D... a metaphorical one. There is danger in having history as an excuse for popcorn (i.e. "Black Book") and "Salo"'s intensity avoids that.

Out of curiousity, I haven't dived into the special features of "Salo" yet, what was the state of mind of Pasollini when he considered to adapt the novel?

I guess the same can be argued with a film like "Irreversible"... of course, it's going to be a hard watch... I mean, the core of the film is about rape. How can you dilute that without taking away how much of a jarring experience that would be?

People at Criterion said it's likely to be Brakhage's Dog Star Man series on Blu-ray. I don't know if that's true, but it looks exciting to me.

Both portray sex as an evil.
But you see Art has many different connotations. Some may take either film as a conception or execution work of art; where as someone with a different background may take it as a human’s effort to imitate a study of certain activities or any one of the many definitions of art. But it can always be pointed out as art. Plus it’s a far leap to say this is causing sexual arousal so that eliminates Pornography from this discussion (Some may but the general public doesn't or wouldn't).

There is no contradiction that Pasolini escalated this film to a god like cult film, and his life defiantly played a part in stirring the controversy around the film. But this film seems to shock more now than the time it was released. That is crazy to me. It shows how dislocated the general public is with reality and their desensitization to violence over sexuality. I get people find this film disgusting, but why don't those same "conservatives" find violence offensive. Salo yes violent is not controversial because of that. I'm not saying all people who dislike Salo are conservatives but the majority I believe are. But it’s perplexing to think how conservative North America has become since the 70’s. The films of the 70’s took things a hell of a lot further than anything from the last two decades; and they seemed to be better off than we are today. People take shit (Hahaha nevermind the pun) way to seriously these days. I just can’t comprehend why a fictional film that is in no way reality can have such a taboo behind it. It’s fake! And I think that’s the biggest problem with the generation of today is parents didn’t bring their children up. They weren’t there; and those people now can’t distinguish between reality and fiction. These are films and some show us beauty and some show horror but they are there to incise the audience and make people ask questions. Some *******s will come and say films are for entertainment (Go watch ****ing Transformers!) Film is an art form and is there to question, discuss, disgust and beatify things as well as entertain but it is not there just for entertainment proposes. The greatest films of all time were not made for audiences, simply for the filmmaker. Films are more complex than sitting in a room for 2 hours and shutting your brain off, they are there to incise something more.

Pasollini was always a very distant person. He wanted to show evil and take this to an extreme but it doen't get into his state of mind as much as you would like to know. I do recommend checking them out though.

ALERT! 3 Days only Barnes & Noble members 25% off one item. (of course you can print off more than one) Ends 11/15/09
I'm confused: Can this be stacked on top of the 50% Off Criterion discount so you end up actually getting 75% off?

That's not really how the math works. You get 25% off the already-discounted price.

That's what I thought...but I was just told in another forum: 50% off with an additional 10% and an additional 25% off is 66.25% off

Uh, no.

When you take 75% off $40 you get $10.

When you take 50% off of $40 you get $20. When you take 25% off of $20 you get $15.

Nothing like a good public shaming to put one in one's place. Apologies to all. I really should do something about getting this foot dislodged from the ol' pie-hole.

I'm guessing you can't use the $5 and the 25% off at the same time. I just bought the Complete Monterey Pop last night. I had to get that, it was the only one at three B&N's I went to. I can't find Wings of Desire to save my life.
