I think the Seven Samurai reference was just a popular film he pulled out of his hat for an example..
I understand everyone has different likes and dislikes.I think most people like me find strengths and weaknesses in every film. Although on occasion I have seen a film or two I just plain did not like.. The whole point of being a film buff is to analyze ,enjoy and discuss films. If we all liked the same things that would be pretty a boring exercise in futility. The film snob type I referred to is a person who goes out of his way to hate on popular films to the point that it obviously has less to do about a films quality other then its popularity. Usually its never followed by a detailed explanation of what is disliked in the film, yet is repeatedly bashed at every opportunity. I think most people here know exactly what I'm talking about. My apologies if this has already been covered but there are nearly 2k pages...
Any who, does anyone know if Criterion has acknowledged the cropping issue on their blu-ray release of Harakiri and if they are going to fix it? ![]() |

I'm getting there. I'm still trying to catch up on my other list of films. I still haven't had a chance to watch Kagemusha yet, and I bought that a week and a half ago. |

Why is everyone protecting Seven Samurai. It's too long, too boring, and it's B&W for god sakes! It also requires one to read for 3-hours staright! I mean, seriously, our teachers can't even get kids to read for 45 minutes! It wasn't even given the 7.1 audio treatment that Captain America is getting. HELLO!!! FAILURE!!!
The packaging was the only saving grace for this movie... [Show spoiler]

You can like Twilight better than Seven Samurai (which isn't even close to his best movie, but I digress...) but Seven Samurai is a better film. Period. There's absolutely no argument you can make that says differently. That doesn't mean you have to like it more than Twilight, or at all, but that doesn't change the fact that it is the better film and there's nothing subjective about it. |

I have a question for Pro-B and others if they have noticed. On the dvdbeaver website it shows the slight cropping difference in the Dazed and Confused Universal and Criterion releases. I have noticed Criterion slightly cropping many of their releases lately. It's just enough where it is slightly noticeable. What the result seems to be is slightly better resolution in the middle of the frame, as the image is brought closer. This almost seems like a 'trick' Criterion is using so their release seems and probably does have better resolution where the eyes generally focus, on the middle of the screen. Although we lose a very small amount of the picture, I guess Criterion believes they are getting better depth and clarity from the slight cropping? Would this be their way to differentiate their release from their competitors release? This is also noticeable on the Harakiri release, as others have commented. The screenshots clearly show the cropping, but the Criterion release has much better depth and resolution in the middle of the frame. Maybe my conspiracy theory, but seems to make sense.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/subjective http://www.businessdictionary.com/de...ubjective.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subjectivity Also, I never said I liked Twilight. I hate, hate, HATE Twilight. I drank a 750ML bottle of rum while reading Twilight, and still couldn't finish the book because it was that horrid (the book, not the rum). Also, how can anyone say Seven Samurai is better than Twilight? You cannot say for a fact that one is better than the other. Who sets the standard as to what film is the better made film? That again, is a subjective opinion as to what merits a well-crafted film. There are a lot of films that have been named "Best Picture," but are far from being the "Best Picture" of that particular year in film. It's a subjective opinion. ![]() /oh God, I feel so dirty defending Twilight //let's just drop this subject now because people are getting waay too into this |
