So it seem. I just got a bit shall we say "giddy" (is that even the word) when she mention it was on TMC. I was maybe hoping 2012 might be the year for it on Blu-ray.

That's pretty much how it mostly goes.
^True^

Then Person 1 comes back with: Well, The Social Network was a much superior film with a top notch screenplay that didn't need to rely on an ill conceived and convoluted dream logic to tell its story!"

Note: I am not attacking either film, it's just that these two always seem to get pitted against one another, due to being high profile films that were released within a small time span.

Punch Drunk Love was a pretty good film. The Wedding Singer was not a particularly offensive film either.

That being said, my top 5 films so far this year were:
1) Drive
2) Take Shelter
3) The Muppets
4) Moneyball
5) Kung-Fu Panda 2 (yes, seriously)
The Wedding Singer was tolerable, as was Bedtime Stories. But yeah, not a Sandler fan. I enjoyed The Three Musketeers, not a favourite of the year, but it was a fun, stupid, movie to watch in 3D in the theatres.

Enjoy what you like and let's not worry too much if someone else happen to disagre. Most of the arguments just happen because of that in most case,

Person 1 : I really did not enjoy Inception, I found it a bit slow and a bit too much full of itself

Person 2 : Really? Are you an idiot? It was the best movie of 2010, it should have won 15 Oscars, the Academy are stupid, Nolan is a genius....

PS : Please don't start jumping on me for Inception, it just was the first movie that came into my head, don't want to be kill on the spot.
I agree with you on Inception. I'm glad The King's Speech won for Best Picture, even though most people call it "Oscar Bait." I watched all of the nominations, and it was the film I enjoyed the most from that year. Please note these comments are from last year at Oscar time, and I'm probably ruining everyone's Christmas with my juvenile critiques of these films:

127 Hours - Danny Boyle - This was really good. anyone who's claustrophobic or has a weak stomach, avoid. I had a little dust in my eyes at the end. - 8/10

Black Swan - Darren Aronofsky - What the hell? I have no idea what the hell I just watched. Special effects were awesome, but the film was total mindfark, and wasn't that enjoyable. - 4/10

The Fighter - David O. Russell - Another boring as crap film. I guess I just hate boxing films. I had no interest in watching this in the first place, and only watched it because of my goal. Do not recommend. - 4/10

Inception - Christopher Nolan - Holy Overrated Batman! It's an interesting concept and an interesting film but not the best picture of the year. Of course the film was hyped up waaay to much to me by a Nolan fanboy. The special effects are fantastic, but the film feels waaay too slow. - 7/10

The Kids Are All Right - Lisa Cholodenko - Indifferent, it's not bad, but it's not good either. It has some humourous moments. - 5/10

The King's Speech - Tom Hooper - Fantastic film. Colin Firth was amazing. The film had quite a few humorous moments in it as well. Prediction for Best Picture Winner for the 83rd Academy Awards - 10/10

The Social Network - David Fincher - Overrated. Boring, yet at the same time, disgusting at how the creators of stalkerbook were portrayed. If this is anywhere near factual, I'm not sure if I still want a facebook account. - 3/10

Toy Story 3 - Lee Unkrich - This was really good. Not quite best picture material, but it will most likely beat How to Train Your Dragon, which I liked a little bit more, for best animated picture. This is coming from someone who has only seen most of the first one, and hardly any of the second. - 8/10

True Grit - Joel and Ethan Coen - If I could combine John Wayne, Glen Campbell, Hailee Steinfeld, Robert Duvall, Josh Brolin, Dennis Hopper, the Coens directing and their screenplay, Elmer Bernstein's score, and Roger Deakins's cinematography, the film would be absolutely perfect. I'm far more partial to the original, but this new adaptation is fantastic. Hailee Steinfeld is much improved over Kim Darby. Glen Campbell is just slightly better than Matt Damon, but not by much. Robert Duvall and John Wayne own their respective characters, Barry Pepper and Jeff Bridges are fine, but are just lacking. I also though Dennis Hopper made a pretty good Moon in the original. This version is closer to the original source material, which I think makes the story slightly more enjoyable than the 1969 version. However, John Wayne still really sells me on the 1969 version. Also, I grew up with it, and I am therefore more predispositioned towards it. - 8/10

Winter's Bone - Debra Granik - "Hillbillies" are farking scary. Seriously. Jennifer Lawrence is phenominal, can't wait to see more from her. The film is fascinating and at times confusing, but it's far more enjoyable that some of the other nominations this year. - 7/10

Seems like I already ruined your Chirstmas, and pissed in your Cornflakes by getting your hopes up for an Ivan the Terrible BD upgrade. I'm sorry.

A 1.66:1 aspect ratio is going to give you black bars on the side of a film when watching on a 16:9 (1.77:1) television. The Fanny & Alexander disc is presented in the correct 1.66:1 ratio, so yes, thin black bars should be present on each side of the image.

Both 1.77:1 & 1.78:1 aspect ratios should fill up your entire 16:9 television screen since 16 divided by 9 equals 1.7777777.

A 1.85:1 ratio should yield very thin black bars along the top and bottom of the image.

Then there are the Slipcover/Steelbook/Digibook/or just "Movies in general" collectors..... if something they've seen and hated goes on sale for $4, they buy it anyways, and never watch it
Don't tell anybody I know that; you might rattle them to their core. As far as they're concerned, enjoying a classic on a superior format = film snob. I've converted a bunch of friends, actually, but all of them claim the upgrade is "too unaffordable". That comes from being a student I suppose.

Just because you buy a Criterion BD it doesn't make you a film historian or film connoisseur & your IQ doesn't increase either

We are all here discussing our love, or dislike of various films. Most of them being from the Criterion Collection.

There is such a wide variety of film types in the collection, and film viewers on this site, that there is certain to be disagreements on what are the "best" and "worst" films in the collection.

We all have different tastes, and that's ok. As long as we don't resort to personal attacks, or become rude, mean, or vulgar, we can enjoy the debate of the merits and deficiencies of the topic du jour.

One thing I have noticed while lurking around on this forum, is that some members are seemingly never happy with any release. If they like the movie, then it's an issue with the video PQ. If the PQ is ok, then it should have had a 7.1 mix. If those are in place, the packaging sucks, or the price isn't where they want it, etc. etc

Heck, there is a massive thread forming regarding the original Fright Night release, due to the way it is being distributed and priced. People there are fighting over age groups vs. the "informed" members of this site vs. the "entitled" vs. the people who are willing to pay the asking price vs. those who refuse to buy just because it can't be bought at Wal-Mart & Best Buy vs...well you get the idea.

I begin to wonder sometimes if these groups of people are ever really happy with any BD release. There are those who will always find something to complain about. That is unavoidable.

Honestly, I sometimes think that some people pretend to hate a release/film just to satisfy some internet alter ego they have created for themselves. I am not saying in this thread, but around the internet, and in forums in general.

IMO this thread is far, far more civilized than the types of behavior I have noticed on other sections of this site and other forums I have been on.

Heck, I admitted to liking both a Wes Anderson film (Fantastic Mr. Fox) and Armageddon. Not one person "attacked" me in any way.

I don't feel that this thread is filled with "film snobs", it's just people who are (generally) more passionate about their feelings on film than the usual consumer. IMO, that is a good thing, it keeps us from arguing about how how much a BD should cost.
Thank you. While all films may not appeal to all people I do not think there is a certain criteria Criterion needs to stick with. I've noticed many harsh words for Broadcast News, mostly over at the MUBI forums. To me it is one of the best American films of the 1980's and without question should have a place in the Criterion library. But for some reason it has turned into the film to hate. You have to wonder why so much negative enegry is used to voice an opinion. I like to participate and show enthusiasm for the format and for the titles being released.

You should def. check it out, it's a very good film IMO. Albert Brooks completely steals the show.

Oh sure, go ahead and poke holes in my broad generalizations by citing the one Sandler flick that I didn't just like, but loved.
