I think this design firm does amazing work. And a lot of the packaging will be familiar.
Wow! Very, very cool. Amazing artwork to be sure.

It makes me want to make a film, just to have these guys put together the artwork/packaging for it!

Thank you for posting that link.

Same here Joe! I've been lamenting the $35.99 price tag that it is fetching on Amazon...I plan to do the same thing and hopefully get it at 40% off with whatever other coups they will accept as well.

Wasn't that touched on at the end of the documentary? Or perhaps on the extras?

From Criterion Cast, Robert Nishimura's Top Ten Criterion Collection Covers For 2011

There's bound to be some disagreements here...

It doesn't really matter if the film has a nice cover, true, and I agree the film is the most important bit, but when you get great films and great graphic design together it's really, really cool, and gives the releases such an added style and attractiveness. I mean, look at the Three Colors set. That is an attractive-looking product, and that's before you even see how great the films are.

Since I'm only interested in about two-thirds of the releases (Blu-rays, anyway), it also makes announcement day more interesting because even if there aren't any films announced that I'm interested in, I get to see some cool new graphic design work.
No no non no no! I do care a bit about covers. Covers are different from what I'm snarking about.

I made that comment due to the influx of threads about how people feel they are "ripped off" by pre-ordering or buying day one, when the price drops a month to a year later, how people who pay more than 10-15 bucks for a release are idiots and wasting their money, how people send films back because they are missing a slipcover, and those would go and priate a movie just because it comes in a DVD case. They're always there, but now they seem much more prominent. It was quite literally the guy who said he'd go pirate a film because the studios didn't package it the way he wanted them to that set me off.

Pretty strong list overall. The only ones I strongly disagree with are the Sam Fuller titles. They weren't bad covers but they didn't strike me as particularly interesting or appealing either. And unlike the films they haven't really grown on me either.

Replace those with People on Sunday and Insignificance and it wouldn't exactly match my top ten but I couldn't really argue either.

I agree. I'm also not too fond of the Zazie cover, but the movie's still pretty fantastic. The fact that I don't enjoy the cover didn't prevent me from buying the film.

The cover for Black Moon was the only thing I really liked about the film. I was quite disappointed by Black Moon; I just couldn't get into the film, and probably expected too much of it because Malle's other films, and the plot really did interest me. I'm glad I watched it before I went out and bought it.

Would it not be wonderful if Criterion gave us a first Ozu on Blu-ray in March

Interesting list but I never really care much about the cover arts. They could release them with white covers and just the title of the movie in black on it and it would be alright with me

Yeah, I really don't care for the Fuller covers. However, I haven't seen them, so best not to judge.
Blow Out took a while to grow on me. I also like the Carlos cover a lot more than others do. Plus, I like the Zazie cover.
I do agree that Sweet Smell and The Killing are the best.

I do like THE MUSIC ROOM's cover. I know most people seemed to hate it for no reason (like the snobs from the other forum).

You're not going to pirate the film because the cover didn't meet your expectations are you?

I enjoy most of the covers Criterion puts out on their releases. I'm not too fussy about what they went with for Head, I actually miss the Rhino cover, because that one tried to imitate one of the many film posters. I'm more than happy that Criterion fixed up the film and put it on BD though, and I'm really pleased with the extras.

The Four Feathers cover reminds me of some of the old Penguin Classic covers:

[Show spoiler]

I really like that, as it is a pretty classic film. I noticed that Penguin has a bunch of revamped covers come out a month or so ago that looked like Criterions, so it's a neat little turn around.

Good, because I'd be very upset. Don't get me wrong, pirating is bad, but sometimes it falls into a grey area:

pirating everything because you're too cheap to buy stuff - bad

pirating stuff because it comes in a DVD case rather than a BD case - bad

pirating stuff to watch it before you buy it - good, if you do end up buying the stuff, but not downright bad if you don't, unless you keep the pirated copy

pirating a copy you own to have back ups - it's a grey area

pirating stuff because you like it, only to find out that you're the only one in the world left with what you pirated because the TV station wiped the original tapes and/or the stuff is completely out of print, and the BBC or some other company grants you amnesty for pirating stuff so they can share it with the rest of the world - totally awesome

I only care about that so I can watch my films. I can't find them in the stores around here, so I order them online. Also, I'm pretty sure I didn't create an entire thread dedicated to that, unlike some of the threads on here where people scream blu murder and advocate piracy because there's French on the packaging, or it comes in a DVD case.

FYI, Anatomy of a Murder is coming on TCM this Thursday at 11:30 AM EST, right after Days of Wine and Roses, and before Witness for the Prosecution. It's a Lee Remick tribute day.
Thanks for the heads up. I set the dvr for Days of Wine and Roses. Jack Lemmon is incredible in that film. One could really see him referencing his own life experiences in that role. He battled the bottle for much of his life but my god-- what a treasure of actor Jack Lemmon was

Being new to the Criterion blurays, I have some questions about StudioCanal's overlap of films. Does the fact that StudioCanal has films like Breathless and Le Cercle Rouge have any impact on Criterion maintaining the license for these films? Are the Crierion editions at risk of going Out of Print like The Third Man?

Jack Lemmon is one of my favourite actors, these are my favourites, and there's many more I want to see:

Mister Roberts
My Sister Eileen
Bell, Book, and Candle
Some Like it Hot
The Apartment

The Wackiest Ship in the Army
Days of Wine and Roses
Irma la Douce
Under the Yum Yum Tress
Good Nieghbour Sam
How to Murder Your Wife
The Great Race
- Professor Fate is my favourite role he did
The Fortune Cookie
The Odd Couple

The Out-of-Towners
The Grass Harp

I wasn't too fussy about JFK, and I'm sick of the Grumpy Old Men films. I do want to see Missing, Avanti! and The China Syndrome.
