I ordered replacement cases for The Third Man, Last Year at Marienbad, and Chungking Express two weeks ago too and still nothing either. Can't wait to get them, as I truly dislike the original digipak packaging for those titles.

I ordered mine about 2 weeks ago also or so... for Last Metro, Last Year at M., 400 Blows, and The Man Who Fell to Earth.

I want to purchase BOTTLE ROCKET but not until I can find it in store and buy it that way. Anyone caught this one at a local retailer in the plastic case yet?

im indifferent about the cases.. i like the clear ones, but also like the original customer cardboard ones (i feel it gives the blus a 'vintage' look) would never pay extra to get replacement ones. just my 2 cents. here are the criterions in my collection:

Chungking Express
Benjamin Button
Playtime (clear case)
Repulsion (clear case)
Third Man (in transit as we speak)

I've never been a fan of carboard casing. I hate WB's DVD snap cases and Blu-ray Digibooks. I ordered those three Criterion movies I mentioned above from Amazon and they arrived almost flattened. The artwork looks nice but the cases look rather flimsy. I have The Wages of Fear and The Seventh Seal and their cases look more durable but still classy. To each their own, but I don't mind paying extra for the replacement cases at all.

I received a partial shipment. I ordered 6 and received 4. The main one I didn't get that I ordered was the Chungking Express.

I got some new Criterions for Christmas: Last Year at Marienbad, Playtime, Repulsion, Chungking Express, and 400 Blows (on its way). I popped Playtime in my PS3, but it wouldn't read it. It at least reads my other Blu and games, so I am hoping that it is just the disc. I will be emailing Amazon tonight.

Yeah, I've had no problems playing any of Criterion's blu-rays in my PS3, so it's more than likely the disc.

ok about 10 of the criterion releases has been on sale with deep discounts($16.99-17.99) for a while now. some of the rest of titles are also being discounted last 2 days(pierrout le fou $21.99, gimme shelter 22.99, howard ends and bottle rocket for 22.49) do you think they will get any cheaper like the easlier releases anytime soon?

People are thinking the next Criterion 50% sale will be in March 2010. But it remains to be seen if it will be quarterly or twice a year that B&N will do it again. I know that people who were members took advantage of the sale and were able to get the Blu-ray titles at $13.99. I was hoping to a see a more titles from Amazon.com but for the most part, I took advantage of both sales.

For me I was fine with the $19.99 price tag without the extra coupons and membership discount. But based on what all the B&N employees told me at three different locations the sale was huge in the summer and even bigger this past winter. So the real question is whether B&N is making money off of volume sold. I worry with the rampant coupon and membership purchases and returns used on this sale might make them think twice concerning blus.

there are titles selling as low as $16 on amazon right now.
It really is quite remarkable.
I picked up "In The realm of the senses" yesterday.

I picked Playtime, For All Mankind and Gimme Shelter from Amazon.com, total makes it at $26/disc but it's still a deal as a canadian. ^^

I would think they likely made money off of it based on volume alone. They probably moved a lot of stock they don't normally move, which right away means making money even if it is at half the price it would normally go for. As for the coupon use, the coupons wouldn't exist if they didn't want people taking advantage of them, and I don't think the membership returns count against the particular sale at all. Somebody could just as easily start a membership to buy books they want and then cancel it for a money back return as well.

For those interested in seeing the plastic replacement case for "Last Year At Marienbad," Chris over at criterionforum.org has added photos of it at the bottom of the packaging page.

I wasn't implying it was seedy to use the coupons or that B&N weren't aware of the loopholes (although I've worked for numerous national retail corps and I can assure you that similar situations have happened and the corporate home offices who make these deals and coupons are more often than not unaware of these multiple coupons and loopholes or at least to the extent with so many random coupons and promotions concurrently running).

The real point, which you addressed, is was is it worth the loss in profit per title due to the offset of volume sold. I would think on a wholesale level criterions cost more than big studio titles so the profit margin will likely be smaller than if it were a large studio release slate.

But then again I could be totally wrong.

As most of us have stated they look nicer and are obviously sturdier. But again, with your current set up I don't know if it will matter too much.

I didn't mean to imply that you implied that it was wrong to use the coupons, sorry about that.

Honestly, I do think it is a little crazy that they offer so many coupons with such a lack of limitations (or a large amount of loopholes), but as long as they are going to offer them, I'm going to take advantage of them. I guess maybe they figure as long as they get some of my money they're happy, and I figure as long as I'm saving my five bucks I'm happy. And willing to buy more.

The cover for Last Year At Marienbad is really nice. That is the one Criterion blu I own in the slip cover. I was able to find a copy that wasn't at all bent up or damaged in a store, and figured I might as well pick it up. Don't think I'll replace the cover, but I like that the option is there just in case.

I think I'm going to wait out picking up most of the other cardboard cover releases until they retail in the plastic cases. I'm in no rush.

I got my FIRST Criterion movie for Xmas. Gomorrah! Man it was an AWESOME film. Im really digging the cases for these releases. I was also taking part in a secret santa exchange at work and I received A Christmas Tale for my gift. So that makes two Criterion releases for me within a week! Plus I have Che on order.
