If you want to place "early Bergman" into a category, this is by far the best of the bunch. Any Bergman fan would love it as it has the very dramatic themes he has shown throughout his career. Flat out for me, it's one of my fav shot of Gunnar Fischer/Bergman's work. I'm not calling it Wild Strawberries or whatever Bergman fans praise as his "best", I just like it alot (and the best of the 2 announced today).

It's on Hulu for the curious. But Bergman fans will buy it regardless.

Every one of the new blu announcements is now near the top of my wish list, with the Bergman's being at the very peak.

Well John...unless I opt to wait until July...I'll likely make the same choices. Still a bit hurt that we still hunger for Chaplin, but the two Bergmans were a surprise...

Thanks! Lots of things I didn't know about any of his early work.

is Summer with Monika considered early Bergman? Where's the cut off? (Serious question)

Already have the La Haine dvd, got halfway through and quit watching it. Probably won't upgrade for a while.

Just imported the Certified Copy AE release. Probably won't pick up the CC version, unless I can get it very cheap.

I'd rather import the region free UK Being John Malkavich. $14.50 shipped from the UK with a better cover vs $27.99 (assuming this will be the AMZ pre-order price) with an ugly cover.

I'll probably buy both the Bergman films though. Haven't seen them, but I'm a fan. I kinda like the barebones releases. I never have enough time to watch any of the special features/commentaries anyway. So $10 less is very welcoming.

Interesting comment up there (or was it a few pages back?) about possibly releasing Woody Allen films with the recent trend of barebones releases. I'm all for that! Get to it CC!

I wonder if enough people email Criterion regarding the terrible artwork, if it could get revised. Three months until release, they might not have started actual printing/production on the physical releases yet.

Smiles of a Summer Night is the cutoff. That was his first huge international success. Even though it was a comedy, its success gave him the clout to make more original, introspective films. And next came Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries, which ushered in his next wave of films. Yes, Monika is "early" Bergman... really, anything before 1955.

In the last year or so Criterion has changed the artwork on several releases between the announcement and the release date. Up to this point, it has been subtle changes, but you never know. The only major change that I remember off the top of my head was for the Makioka Sisters.

As for the releases, I am pretty pleased. Haven't seen La Haine, but I just requested it from the library. The Bergman titles will be a welcome addition to my collection, as will Certified Copy.

No Chaplin? Oh well...the fact that there are two Bergman titles this month gives me hope for a double Chaplin month sometime in the second half of the year.

Rich, yet again shut out on Chaplin. Apparently, they even hinted at it. Who knows, but we still have Park Circus. You know Criterion seems to be on this Bergman kick, with 5 blu-ray releases after these 2. I saw your question about Downey. I have seen 2 of the Eclipse films and they are a very different take on things to say the least. That set is not a day 1 for me, but a definite buy on sale.
