I was also tempted by Z but, for some reason, Missing just looks more appealing to me . I know who Gavras is and everything but the fact is that I have never had the opportunity to watch any of his films and so Missing seems like a great one to start with .

I like ordering them in alphabetical order. It makes them easier to find so that I can watch them. However, your way is tempting too, it might make it easier to pick something out to watch.

The NHL trade deadline is, in Canada, an acceptable reason to stay home from work or generally put life on hold.

What I can't understand is why hockey isn't so beloved in the States? God I love being Canadian. We're awesome. I love hockey. But why didn't the Leafs do anything?

I'm all for a marketing line like Studio Classics, Cinema Classics, Vault Series, Marquee Musicals, Legacy Series, etc., especially if there is an attractive trade dress. If the studio wants to stick a number on the spine, who am I to complain? Getting the discs in print/titles available is the main thing, and if the studio believes in the marketing angle or the "collectability" of the series collector and the result is we get a title in print, why the drama?
No drama whatsoever TJS_Blu. Just noting the asymmetrical implementation of these numbering schemes, and the oddness they even exist for something as eclectic as home video.

Plus, not to put too fine a point on it, other than Criterion, the studios introduce and abandon these series concepts as often as they change their their undies...and never seem to launder or rewear. How many of these 'special' collector series or numbered edition libraries are still active? At least Criterion has consistently stuck with this concept for both DVD and Blu-ray, which gives their spines some stability and meaning.

But would a spine number, or absence of it, ever influence my purchase of a movie? Of course not. I think we agree on that.

You know, I have always wanted to do this but with country instead of specific directors (Maybe, with they being some sort of sub-category) . My DVDs are organized by director (I know, I know, I just say I wished they were for country but directors seem easier at the moment), my BDs by the size of the package and all my Criterion/Kino/MoC go to a different shelf where they are organized by their respective studio and in the case of Criterion by spine. Now that I think about it, my system is WAY too archaic .

Sad to see Trafic will never get a Blu-ray release from Criterion. All the more reason to pick up the fantastic DVD before prices sky rocket. No new releases on any format in any country. I have a feeling Tati wont be getting the love he deserves on blu, aside from playtime of course.

It might not have been as cheap as the Amazon discount, but I just ordered World on a Wire from B&N with the 25% off Leap Year coupon they sent out. Yet again, I forgot to use eBates.

I'm looking forward to checking this one out in a month's time, as that's how long it will take to get here.

Did Criterion say they weren't going to do more Tati? I would love more Tati, even if Playtime is not well loved on this board.

I like Tati, I liked Monsieur Hulot's Holiday and I did like Playtime. I just didn't love them. Playtime was fun, but it's not a film I'd watch all that often. I think you have to be in a certain frame of mind to appreciate it, so I'm going to have to revisit it.

I quite like M. Hulot's Holiday. Goes well with a relaxing summer afternoon.

Playtime is awesome . I love that movie. Funny that I was watching it the other day and my brother in law was visiting. Lets just say that "he did not get it".

I watched Daisies last night on Hulu. What a odd little film. I really enjoyed the visuals, sometimes I found myself not reading the subs to just look at the visuals. The two girls were extremely cute and fun to watch. There was no plot in this film (unless I missed it). It was just these two girls running around doing odd things. I enjoyed it for what it was and will check out the other films in the Czech set. Very strange film thou. And this is coming from someone who absolutely loved Pierrot Le Fou. At 1 hour 13 min its definitely something worth checking out.

May preorders finally up on the Canadian Amazon site! Just cancelled my US order for the two Bergmans so I can save 10 bucks and get them a few days quicker.

There is also a UK BFI release of Les Vacances de M. Hulot, although it is region B locked. I love Tati, and Trafic is a decent film, but what I'm really desperate for is a blu-ray release of Mon Oncle.

Playtime is not a movie that everyone can "get" that is true. I really like it and I find it as a lot of depth that is sometime overlook by people.

Well...I was home for a few days, bedridden with the flu and was able to catch up on some of my Criterions:

I was able to watch Yojimbo and Sanjuro which I thought were both excellent. I may have a man-crush on Toshiro Mifune who I think is a great actor. And what I didn't notice, whether it be my ignorance or Mifune's acting ability, but I did not catch that he was in High and Low. I'm thinking that the lack of the samurai get-up helped, but I do think he is a tremendous talent.
But I did find myself liking Sanjuro just a bit more than Yojimbo. Perhaps it's because I've seen both remakes of Yojimbo, I'm not sure. Am I alone on this (I'm thinking I am, haha)?

Also watched The Red Shoes finally which I thought looked great on Bluray.
[Show spoiler]Though, when she requested that her red shoes be removed after being run over (or simply hit) by the train seemed a tad too unrealistic [at least to me]...

The King of Marvin Gardens (thus finally completing my viewing of all of the BBS collection) was truly great. I thought both Bruce Dern and Jack Nicholson were great, especially Jack Nicholson's opening monologue.

So despite a fever, I thought these were all great flicks

I know everyone was (sarcasm) dying to know all of this [perhaps there are the few that simply needed recommendations to which I recommend everything above], but I am truly curious on peoples positions on Yojimbo/Sanjuro...and I would have loved more movies that dealt with Sanjuro and followed more of his escapades.

If you didn't recognise Toshiro Mifune in High and Low, check out The Bad Sleep Well, as he looks even less like "himself" in that film:

[Show spoiler]

I love them both, but I prefer Yojimbo. There was a non-Kurosawa film that featured Mifune called Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo, but I can't comment on it as I have never watched it.

King of Marvin Gardens is one of my favourite films out of the BBS set. I'd say it's tied for second with Five Easy Pieces.

also, when did eBates get to be so stingy? B&N's now down to only 2% cash back, when it was 4-8%.
