Double Indemnity post-haste. Like octagon stated, just about perfect and in my opinion the seminal classic noir.

[Show spoiler] If you want to wait for a BD release Eureka/MoC have it scheduled for June and Universal is rumored to have it scheduled for September.

Stalag 17, The Fortune Cookie and Sabrina are very good.

I'm not that crazy about The Lost Weekend but a lot of people love it.
That's why I listed it last. The Lost Weekend ironically made me drink. It was almost too preachy. Days of Wine and Roses was a more interesting, albeit just as preachy, film about alcoholism.

I prefer Days of Wine and Roses as well.

And I can't think of either without my mind wandering to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf which smokes them both. Granted, the dysfunctions are more general than alcoholism per se but still...

I agree with you. I honestly think Martha was the best role Liz ever played. It was a well-deserved Best Actress win IMHO.

Are we now starting a trend on films that depict substance abuse of some sorts?

Well...if you're willing to tie in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, then it would even be appropriate to this thread!

I'm saving up right now for an oppo bdp-93 right now. When I get that I plan on raiding the Eureka/MoC collection.

Bigger Than Life would have been the better suggestion! You don't want to sound like Lena Dunham afterall!!!!!

As far as learning a lesson from your abuse...agreed on "Bigger". Fear and Loathing is more of a "How To" manual, as Hunter never seemed to regret any of his "habits".

I'd agree with pretty much everyone else's Wilder recommendations...but I'd give Witness for the Prosecution a slight edge there... and when it comes to those mid-60s comedies... Kiss me, Stupid would be my favorite.

I also very much enjoyed Shutter Island, and Hugo is also fantastic. I have yet to see King of Comedy, After Hours, or Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, but they all look very good. Actually, wouldn't any of those 3 make great Criterion additions??
I've only seen Shutter Island once and have been meaning to watch it again. My first impressions was it was good, not great. I had some mixed feelings about Hugo after watching it last week. I thought it was very well done, but for some reason, I didn't connect to it on an emotional level and it felt a little forced. This could very well be my issue though as many people loved the film and were moved by it.

I was very disappointed with The Departed. Killer cast, good acting, but it was overly long and the entire storyline with the therapist was completely not necessary. I thought Infernal Affairs was a better movie.

I have not seen King of Comedy, but I did not care for After Hours.

As many times as you'd like. I trust people on here won't spam. I won't close the poll.

It's really just to gauge what films are on peoples' minds and what they want to see The Big C issue on blu. I figure it's better than the FB nonsense and people have already submitted some interesting titles. Although, I think Tommy Wiseau checks this thread as THE ROOM has been suggested.

I'm with you there. DOUBLE INDEMNITY and THE LOST WEEKEND in June are too tempting.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? > Bigger Than Life > Days of Wine and Roses

Haven't gotten around to F&L yet.

I need to give that another look soon. I never really warmed up to it but I think I got a little too caught up in plot contrivances (which are pretty much an Agatha Christie staple so what was I expecting) and got distracted from just enjoying the ride.

I didn't list Brazil, Life Aquatic, The Game, or Badlands... but I do want an upgrade of Forbidden Games. Considering the DVD is OOP, I assume they lost the rights.

One of the "supplements" is narrated by a reporter who wrote "The Battle for Brazil," available as a book or in a shorter LA Times article. Terry Gilliam's commentary is interesting, but the only memorable thing about it is that I got the impression that he had a lot of fun making the movie. In general, I've found Criterion's supplements can be superficial when I am very interested in a film.

Anyway, I challenge anyone to explain how the "criterion cut" is any different than the UK blu-ray's cut. Why should anyone wait?
The differences between the UK cut and the Criteiron "final cut":

The final cut begins with clouds under the titles, like the American version, yet it ends with the original stark ending without clouds from the UK version.

A cut while Mrs. Terrain is talking about the "delicate Rembrandt etchings" is corrected to be less obvious.

There is extra footage before Spoor answers the phone in Sam's apartment.
