Is it possible to hate John Wayne?

Considering it came out on DVD after Criterion started releasing blus (only by a few months though), they decided at the time it wasn't blu worthy. I don't see them going back on that decision, but you never know, I guess.

Apparently so. So many people born post-1960 seem to dislike him, due to all he represents. Many call him a coward because he never actually served in WWII, and Phil Ochs (there's that name again), claims he lost respect for Wayne when he made Ballad of the Green Berets. He said something along the lines of the native american films were somewhat more honourable as opposed to the films about Vietnam. There are also those who hate him because he's a one-note actor, and a racist republican jackass.

I think I covered all the reasons why people seem to hate John Wayne, feel free to fill in any in that I've forgotten.

I would place my money on the fact that Criterion acquired the rights to the film before blu-ray was in the picture and only had the rights to release it on DVD before I'd believe that Criterion said "it wasn't blu worthy."

I think anyone who says John Wayne is a one note actor seriously needs to watch or rewatch The Searchers and Red River. Even John Ford admitted he didn't know the Duke had it in him until he saw what Howard Hawks did with him in Red River.

My old high school English teacher served in Vietnam and said pretty much as soon as he got there he cursed John Wayne's name. Not because of Wayne's beliefs or anything, but that the fact that all his war movies (especially the Green Berets) were extremely misleading. But I don't think he has anything personal against Wayne or his other films.

Also, Head was treated pretty shabbily by Rhino (fullscreen, so-so transfer, no commentary, and just a handful of trailers), but Criterion grabbed it and gave it a fantastic transfer, so maybe Criterion will rescue Elmer Gantry too.
Elmer Gantry in the collection alongside its companion Night of the Hunter -- sounds good to me.

I don't think Wayne is a one-note actor, I'm a fan. I was just repeating the criticisms I've heard.

Why do you think I keep flogging the film?

I see that In the Realm of the Senses is quite popular and have read that Salo is BFI's most popular title.
Judging from Hulu, if Criterion release David Hamilton's legally/morally-dubious films, they'll be rolling in the money Sex sells basically.

True in the past and I suspect will remain true for a long time to come

I don't know if this directly correlates to future releases, but these are the lowest spine #'s of DVDs that are still in print, but have not had a Criterion blu released or announced:

#22 Summertime
#29 Picnic at Hanging Rock
#31 Great Expectations
#32 Oliver Twist
#33 Nanook of The North
#34 Andrei Rublev
#40 Armageddon

I wouldn't be surprised to see a Dickens boxset for his bicentenary.

Nanook of the North and Andrei Rublev will probably come first followed by Picnic at Hanging Rock. Or at least that what I think looking at what people commonly requests . I am really hoping they release Nanook of the North at some point this year. Taste of Cherry (Probably my most request upgrade alongside The Cranes are Flying) is in the low numbers too .

I have been trying to figure out what should I buy from the latest slates and I just noticed that most of my "anticipated" or wanted titles are those in the cheaper price point (MSRP $29.99). In fact, I think some of the most interesting/refreshing choices of the last months have been these ones. What is your opinion about this kind of releases? They seem to give Criterion a greater chance of putting -not so obvious- stuff in the Collection by sacrificing the supplements. I am really glad they are taking this route with at least one title per month (Don't know why June didn't follow the trend, though). So far, the only titles in the mentioned price point are:

- The Makioka Sisters by Kon Ichikawa
- Identification of a Woman by Michelangelo Antonioni
- The Moment of Truth by Francesco Rosi
- Three Outlaw Samurai by Hideo Gosha
- Letter Never Sent by Mikhail Kalatozov
- The Organizer by Mario Monicelli
- Summer Interlude by Ingmar Bergman

Which titles do you think may fit the trend? I am really hoping they give this treatment to the more risky stuff if that means we will finally start seeing more films from Latin America, Spain or the Middle East. Some stuff from Iran, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Israel would be really appreciated .

Sorry if this is off topic...

Just watched The Devils (1971). I had heard of the film before but was not prepared for what I experienced. The term masterpiece gets used quite often these days, but I feel quite certain to label this film as such.

I really don't know what to say.

I'm hoping that Criterion release some Naruse that way. Other than that, it's just wishful thinking: Koundouros, some Taiwanese films, non-Marketa Vlacil, Mauro, dos Santos, some African cinema
