Not to nitpick but Those Who Make Tomorrow was allegedly co-directed by Hideo Sekigawa, Akira Kurosawa, and Kajirô Yamamoto despite it being "officially" directed by Kurosawa. Also, Kurosawa co-directed Uma (1941) along with Kajirô Yamamoto, only here Yamamoto was designated as the official director. Kurosawa also directed a straight to TV documentary in 1970 entitled Song of the Horse. As of now, both Those Who Make Tomorrow and Song of the Horse are virtually unavailable unless you can find the reels buried somewhere in Japan along with the complete version of The Idiot . I know Uma has been screened at least once in the States as of 1986 and may hopefully be available someday on home video to satiate curiosity (I can't imagine it being a Kurosawa masterpiece).

Thanks for the post, I'll definitely have to check a couple of those out

I'm kind of doing a study on abstraction and the hyperkinetic in action cinema. Been checking out Tony Scott and last week saw Criterions very own "The Rock." I guess it all leads to Armageddon. Haven't seen it since 2nd grade, even then I knew it was stoooopid. Oh dear what am I in for?

It would be nice if Criterion surprised us with Kurosawa's - Dreams

The only ones that come to mind are Mon Oncle Antoine and Nanook of the North. They can't be counting foreign productions set in Canada or filmed here, like 49th Parallel, could they?

It's saying 630 titles in the collection at the time it was made (not counting Eclipse) yet if you add those "Selections by Country" titles up you get 804. So they are obviously counting Eclipse in that so Allan King. I looked on Criterion's site and this is what they count as Canada:

Mon oncle Antoine
Naked Lunch
Brand upon the Brain!
Paddle to the Sea
Videodrome
Warrendale
A Married Couple
Come On Children
Dying at Grace
Memory for Max, Claire, Ida and Company
Eclipse Series 24: The Actuality Dramas of Allan King

That is 11. They counted each Eclipse title as 1, then counted the complete Eclipse set as 1 after the fact.

Criterion tries to be sneaky with the Country stuff. For example, on Hulu they say they have 3 films from Brazil (yeah right), you click on it and it only shows 1 film, Black Orpheus, which I don't count as a Brazilian film since it was made by a French filmmaker. It's like saying Inception is a French film because I think I saw France in it.

D'oh. How could I forget Cronenberg? And Maddin? Eclipse I wouldn't have counted as part of the collection proper anyway, but still...

Thanks for the memory jog SB. I'll go to my room now.

Don't worry, like I edited in my last post, Criterion stretches out the truth of what Country a film is from, so don't feel bad.

Usually one would say a film is from the country the filmmaker is from. Others where it was funded (the right one most of the time). Criterion seems to do those, plus adds in what locations the film has (they do that on Hulu) which is a complete facepalm.

hi guys great thread here i have been following it for some monhts now as i am a Criterion fan also. i always had the urge to register but today, after reading vanya on the 42nd street review i had to register in order to send him the message transcrited bellow!

Did anyone notice this?

--------------------
i am sorry to point this but i found what i think is a glaring mistake in your review of vanya on the 42nd street:

it says "Uncle Vanya's sister, Sonya (Brooke Smith, TV's Grey's Anatomy), is also frustrated..." reinforced by "Maman (Lynn Cohen, Manhattan Murder Mystery), Uncle Vanya and Sonya's elderly mother..."
uncle vanya is not sonya's sister he is her... uncle, and "Maman" is uncle vanya's mother, sonya calls her "grandmother" several times both in the play and the film, uncle vanya also says something like "my sister, your dear old mother..." to sonya. then the reviewer says " The film, like the play, is brilliant". Anyone who saw the movie or read the play would not make these mistakes, why is Vanya called "Uncle", if no nefew appears?

Nice to see Targets hasn't been totally forgotten! Wish Criterion would seriously think about doing it.

I want to get a Ingmar Bergman film on BD. I was thinking of starting with 'Seventh Seal'. Good or bad idea? I really would like "Wild Strawberrys' on BD as I really like the cut that I've seen. Plus, any chance his films are released in Sweden on BD? I'm going there in June.

If you wanna stick to blu-ray, and particularly Criterion, I'd choose The Magician. My next choice would be the Fanny & Alexander set and then I'd still wait and get Summer With Monika or Summer Interlude before The Seventh Seal. If you've never seen The Seventh Seal, though, you may want to start there since it's been dubbed an "iconic" Bergman film. For your money, though, I think you'd enjoy The Magician much more, if you haven't seen it already.

Interesting. Hollis Frampton has essentially replaced Harold and Maude, as that's when that title was supposed to be released.

Yeah, I agree to start with The Magician as well. A hidden little gem with some really nice gothic settings. Looks quite nice on Blu-ray, in the realm of how Kuroneko looks as well.

I'd say Seventh Seal is the best Bergman, it would be my choice if I had to pick one on BD.

I'd also recommend The Seventh Seal over any other Blu. This is coming from a non-Bergman fan for the most part. I have seen all of his available films and have only enjoyed The Seventh Seal and The Virgin Spring. Still looking forward to the 2 new Blu's coming from Criterion. Always willing to watch a Bergman film hoping for another gem.

Seventh Seal is a very good movie, I would recommend it as a first but as other have mention you may wish to start with The Magician instead
