They should actually do it...if for no other reason than to prove that it's possible to 'Criterionize' anything. Reitman even has an 'oeuvre' of sorts. Could be a gasss.

I didn't love it (in fact, I didn't even really like it all that much) but I thought it was very well done and was glad to have seen it. I don't really even regret buying it because I'm sure I'm going to want to go back to it at some point.

I'm not sure overrated is the right word for David Bowie either. Do even his most ardent fans say he's a great (or even a particularly good) actor? I know people rave about his performances but that's not exactly the same thing.

As for the acting overall, I didn't have any complaints. It wasn't always particularly gritty or realistic but I think that was by design.

Don't doubt Island of Lost Souls; great movie! Wonderful makeup for it's time.

Definitely get Crusoe mport... It fits the bill for what you described. It's worth it for the monkey, by herself.

Both Robinson Crusoe on Mars and Island of Lost Souls are among the best in breed for their respective genres and eras of filmmaking. Both were lost in the vault for many years and have a rich backstory of critical underappreciation and outright asset neglect. And both have been treated exceptionally well by Criterion.

So don't be thrown off by what you read here. I mean, would you ask a tatar chef the best place in town to buy a cheeseburger?
Just picked up both Robinson Crusoe on Mars and Island of Lost Souls! Can't wait to watch them!

Actually, hitting that 'enter' button takes less than a second so technically, in a heartbeat is feasible.

I really liked Design for Living. It was fun and clever, a great transfer and the supplements look pretty good (I got about twenty minutes into the 1960- something televised play and it was pretty interesting) but I didnt love it and I don't know that I'm going to be going back to it all that often.

I kind of had the same 'not exactly buyer's remorse but kinda sorta' reaction to Kino's Nothing Sacred and I'm starting to think the Lean/Coward set might fall more into that category than not.
Don't mean to change the subject, but I'm still waffling on the David Lean/Noel Coward set and have the same sort of trepidation as expressed above (had to go back nine pages to retrieve the post). My main interest was in "In Which We Serve", a very fine film, and in "Brief Encounter" (although whenever I think of the latter I find myself visualizing Michael Rennie in naval uniform in the train scene from "Sailor of the King" for some reason). I don't remember "Blithe Spirit" with any great affection and can't remember anything of 'Happy Breed' though I'm pretty sure I saw it years ago. I'm hoping that taken together the set could be a priceless look into the British soul and sensibilities at the height of Empire, but am a little concerned that it could be a little dry and dated as well.

Anyway I'm not seeing anything here related to the release even though it's been out since last Tuesday. Don't know whether to interpret that as general disinterest or that folks just haven't received their orders. Anyone have this yet who could share some feelings about it?

With the recent discussion of favorite blind buys and my recognition of having more than a few still unwatched Criterion blu-rays on my shelf, I decided to watch White Material today. I was surprised how little I cared for it.

The acting is superb all around, especially Isabelle Huppert as Marie, the willfully stubborn and blind-to-reality matriarch trying to hold on to her colonial coffee plantation in an un-named African country as civil war arrives at her doorstep. The cinematography is lovely and bold. The story is interesting, and is told as a series of flash-backs and flash-forwards, which I felt drew me in and kept me engaged. But as the movie progressed, I became less and less interested, just when the dread and tension were ramping up. This a decent drama, but something seemed missing for me. None of the main characters is particularly sympathetic or engaging (which is the point, I suppose). About half-way in an event occurs that marks a watershed.

MAJOR SPOILER ALERT - Do not click if you haven't seen the film

[Show spoiler]The loafish son, who looks and acts like he grew up in Huntington Beach, Ca, instead of Africa (no offense to HBers who read this, but I used to live there and that is what he reminded me of ), walks off into the bush and gets waylaid by some boy soldiers. This event is traumatic and causes him to go all Travis Bickle, shave his head, grab a shotgun, and disappear until near the end of the film, when he reappears trying to join the gang of child soldiers terrorizing the neighborhood. I guess his mum should have let him sleep in as late as he wanted.

He then leads this gang of hellions back to the plantation to find their revered leader who is being given shelter there, if you can call it that. Then Travis Bickle makes sure to take out his old man, or at least that was the impression I got since the event itself is not actually shown on film but only the aftermath with the son leaving the room (thanks for nothing, Dad). The child soldiers gorge on candy and prescription pills, then fall asleep among strategically placed children’s toys so that the viewer is reminded, you know, that these are kids and stuff even though they carry AKs and shoot people.

The final moments are pretty inexplicable, one of those shock endings that doesn’t make a lot of sense. I suppose there is some allegory in it, and you could make an argument that it represents colonial whites self-destructing amid the madness, but it just did not work for me. I guess the father-in-law deserved it for walking around shirtless for half the film, and Isabelle just goes nuts seeing the end results of her stubbornness. But I couldn’t help thinking she likely would have come crashing through the roof after climbing up on top of a freshly burned-out house, or even if the roof were sturdy enough not to collapse, it would have been frying pan hot. No wonder she gets pissed.

Mind you, all this is done with very fine acting and camera work, and I admit shorting the film the due it deserves by summing it up so flippantly. Some of the scenes I describe above are well done, and quite moving. There are several terrible events portrayed with skilled restraint. But the movie left me not feeling much of anything when I don’t think that was the intent. In the end, I found White Material to be a flawed, finely acted, beautifully filmed drama that I may have to watch again to fully appreciate, but have no desire to do so anytime soon.

Not a recommended blind buy, but not a bad film by any means. I would rent it first.

I would TOTALLY buy KC Criterion Collection, it's a funny move (intentionally and unintentionally). Plus that cover kicks all sorts of ass.
