And re: animation, I'm surprised, too, that Criterion doesn't have at least a few releases. I wonder if work like that of the Brothers Quay and some of the Eastern European and Russian animation wouldn't be obtainable. And it would certainly get the work out more, like Crit's forays into experimental cinema. I have often come across great, creative animation that is hidden away on DVDs in cardboard cases. |

After the overwhelmingly positive response towards The Music Room, I decided to get it a few days ago. Just saw my first Ray film and I can wrap it up with a single word: Extraordinary. I was really REALLY blown-away with it. The story feels very local, personal and representative of a culture but the long series of universal themes carried along the film are what I sincerely loved. The music is beautiful, the musicians and dancers are given quite a big part of the film and I am glad Ray did that. To have long scenes where you can simply appreciate a different but complementary art to that of cinema is incredible. All of these aspects are great but the cinematography takes the cake. The camera movement is elegant and follows the events in an almost perfect way. It reminded me of Kiarostami's style. It isn't static like an Ozu but isn't moving all that much either. Thanks to all of those who recommended it, now the wait for Pather Panchali and the rest of the Apu Trilogy is going to be HARD

Criterion released Akira back in the day (on laserdisc), so they have done animation. It is not their forte, though. Throughout the Akira supplements, they referred to "magna" rather than manga. It was otherwise a strong release, with the entire first issue of the comic book included on the disc.

Has anybody seen Silver Lode? It's a terrific 50's western (clocking in at 75 minutes) with sublime storytelling and performances, set pieces and one of the most convincing of the anti McCarthy westerns (the villain is actually named McCarty). I wish criterion would release more westerns.

I was also looking into this. I have a high quality image of the Benjamin Button Blu-ray cover on my computer, I just have to resize it to fit the dimensions of a Criterion Blu-ray cover. It shouldn't take too long. I will post the result when I'm done.

Have you seen 127 Hours? You should definitely see his unique visuals on display. For example there is multiple scenes where he splits the screen in two or more pieces and puts a different images in them. Truly genius. There are not many directors who can pull it off as seamlessly as Danny Boyle.
