I'm still hoping Rashomon is the film referenced, but here are some other films from 1950 that I think fit the label. Would love to see The Asphalt Jungle, plus with the recent posts from Criterion about Huston it kind of fits. One can always wish.

The Asphalt Jungle ( Huston)
Les Enfants Terribles ( Melville)
Scandal ( Kurosawa)
Sunset Boulevard( Wilder)
Stage Fright ( Hitchcock)
Where the Sidewalk Ends ( Preminger)
Los olvidados ( Brunuel)
The Furies ( Mann)
Story of a Love Affair ( Antonioni)

I think "upgrade" is the word you're missing! Regardless, I would absolutely love Los olvidados

Yeah, I became sad when I heard it was an upgrade. Los Olvidados is my "dream" Criterion release .

Rats!!!! Overlooked that.

Guess that dwindles down my list a good bit. I'm still thinking its Rashomon since its been so long since the restoration and their last Kurosawa release.

Les Enfants Terribles ( Melville)
Scandal ( Kurosawa)
The Furies ( Mann)
Night and the City (Dassin)
Rashomon ( Kurosawa)

The Jungle Book is most likely not going to be upgraded from its current Eclipse set, Sabu!

I want it, but it's 8 years too late.

Criterion lost La Ronde didn't they? I want Rashomon, because I am a consumer ***** and bandwagon jumper.

I want Rashomon just so people can finally shut up about it

Plus it might be paired with a Kurosawa I actually do want - Drunken Angel, Stray Dog, Throne of Blood, etc.

I want The Bad Sleep Well more than Rashomon, but I will most likely preorder Rashomon regardless of a B&N sale.

Just finished the Samurai Trilogy by Inagaki and it was awesome. I will have to pick this up eventually.

I'll go for either, Hidden fortress is pretty under rated. It's one of the first movies I remember seeing and being totally absorbed by.
"los Olvidados" would be great on Blu ray, another under rated movie, but I doubt it will happen soon.
Probably Rashomon will get the upgrade....

The Bad Sleep Well is my most wanted Kurosawa upgrade. What an amazing film, and haunting! Then I would love Stray Dog or Throne of Blood.

It's nice Criterion is knocking out titles that are among the most requested in our little poll in this thread. Last month it was IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE and now probably RASHOMON.

Either that or it's just a coincidence and it has zero influence on the folks at Crit Co.

I just got done taking a look at Hulu's Criterion listings and I might just try a free trial...I had thought someone had posted a link to give you a longer free trial (I want to say a month?). Anyone remember that link?

Anyway...based on the films I saw posted...I'm taking a wild stab at a possible Eclipse set:"Naruse - Four Films". I can't believe I found four of his films that I have NEVER heard of: Ginza Cosmetics (1951), Mother (1952), Wife (1953) and Scattered Clouds (1967).
