I got the feeling that Pathe thought they were restoring The Bible. I believe they thought they could 'transform' the film into a modern jewel. It's like cleaning the bathroom floor with bleach, then putting the dirty bathmat back on it. I think Criterion had to use what was given to them and money was already spent. Hopefully they don't use the Pathe transfer of Le Samourai or the natives will be calling for heads.....

Is anyone else still waiting for their order from the last 50% off sale on the Criterion site to ship? Mine was originally scheduled to ship on October 9th (which is almost two weeks after the sale as it is) but now it's not set to ship until the 15th?? With how great a deal it is I don't mind waiting, but almost a month's wait BEFORE it even ships is kinda ridiculous.

Studiocanal's The Third Man is pretty good too. And much cheaper than the criterion edition these days.

They're only screen caps but the Canal image appears to be flatter and less film-like than Criterion's offering.

I don't recall there being an Amazon Criterion sale lol, unless it's a Gold Box Deal sale like last week with The Samurai Trilogy and The Seven Samurai.

I ended up with both versions of Third Man, and would classify the SC release as "good" and the CC as "exceptional". Whether the price difference is justified, that would be up to the individual.

Side by side, the criterion release is superior in every regard, but i would still consider the SC to be good enough for anyone who wants a nice looking blu of the film without paying close to $200. Just my opinion, though.

Btw: What are the chances of a Criterion release of Odd Man Out. Wasn't there a desk-photo with lists of possible 2012 releases, which Criterion posted on Facebook a year ago? I remember Odd Man Out being one of the movies on that list...
