Rich, I agree 100% too. I was floored by the depth and resolution on the transfer to blu-ray. The swamp scene is something to be seen. IMO the best looking B&W film Criterion has released on blu.
I will say, and you will agree, displaying it on the Kuro doesn't hurt either...

Do you own ORPHEUS, too? It's a supernatural take on the story. Both films are excellent.

Nope, nor have I watched it yet. It's now being added to the list.

Also, I'm not totally illiterate, I'm just on a smartphone, and autocorrect is atrocious.

I had an almost identical experience to this film (I watched mine a few years back though). Also, the music, while not of the style I usually gravitate to, was almost addictive here.

Going to get jumped on for saying this, but I'm wondering if Wes Anderson was inspired by the soundtrack for Life Aquatic. Seu Jorge's covers of Bowie are reminiscent of the music in Black Orpheus.

I thought HMV were finally getting good at getting in Criterion Blu-Ray here but guess they too like all other stores here are back to being worthless. Didn't get M in and now Stagecoach (Red Dead Redemption had me even more hyped to watch this today too ). I prefer buying in store even if it means paying more since it makes exchanges easier and after Walkabout I am not putting much faith in Criterion. The thing I don't get is one HMV location here did get in one copy of Brakhage and I have it on hold so now to go way out of my way to pick that up. M and Stagecoach I am sure would have a bigger market than this will have but they decided to get this in and not those?

bought the replacement case for Last Emperor and it cost almost with about a few bucks the same as when I bought the actual movie from B&N from the sale.

Shipping kills it but at least now my OCD won't kick into overdrive without having it.

Out of the original releases that came in the paper/cardboard case what was the most popular? I would have thought by now everyone would have bought those movies but maybe not.

really can't wait for my copy of Brazil to arrive.

Which HMV? I hardly ever go to them for anything, let alone criterions. The one in Mic Mac has poor stock in general and they're always more expensive.

Agreed John! The black levels on Down By Law are really inky black on my Elite.

The Elite really makes the B&W films, especially the silents, come to life. Too bad one day, it will come to an end with no replacement as of yet....

got my replacement case for Last Emperor today (damn there always fast with this even when I was in Houston)

Does anybody know anything about Criterion 99 Reasons DVD? Was it only produced in small quantities or given away freely? Did it have something to do with this being my official Criterion store purchase? (using the website not using paypal like what I did with the first 3 cases since they weren't in the store)

I own the Elite Pro 111FD, which I bought as they started to phase them out. It's in my living room and I only use it on the weekends/holidays and mostly for watching films. I baby it for the reason you listed above.

I didn't have it professionally calibrated (can't afford), but broke it in myself and used the calibration software to access the service mode on the TV and used settings suggested by a pro-calibrator (thanks to AVS forum). It's a TV I could never have afforded when they first came out.

There was some discussion earlier.... It's given with purchases from their official store, yeah (while available), excluding some non-movie items (gift certificates/posters...)

That's why I use a sharpie and color in the spine numbers whenever I get a Criterion. Just shaded in my Third Man Blu.

Yep.

I know some have asked for this before so here's the complete Criterion blu-ray listing in spreadsheet format.
