This would be nice, especially if its not an Eclipse..
I think Repo Man is certain and possibly Eraserhead. Criterion has been on a roll with the popular titles and I wouldn't even be surprise if we saw the last Wes (Zissou) being upgraded. It's been a while since we have seen Wes...

I'm thinking Pierre Étaix will be released as a mainline release on Blu and DVD. Like The Complete Jean Vigo was a couple years ago.

These are such terrible news . The medium just lost one of the truly great masters. Oshima should have been really happy for what he did and accomplished as an artist. Really, few contribute as much as he did for the medium they work for. Can't really wrap my mind around this.

I had some fun during lunch break by counting the Criterions in my collection. I have 146 Criterions on DVD, because I've been collecting them for several years. I only have 12 Criterions on Blu-ray.

Looking through a few of my Criterion DVDs that I'd love to see released on Blu-ray someday.
Le Samouraï
Bob Le Flambeur
Le Deuxième Souffle
Le Doulos
Les Enfants Terribles
Sullivan's Travels
The Lady Eve
Unfaithfully Yours
Touchez Pas Au Grisbi
Le Trou
Brute Force
Carnival of Souls (great cover art for the DVD!)
Classe Tous Risques
Elevator to the Gallows
Eyes Without a Face
Grand Illusion (I should just pick up the StudioCanal Blu, I guess.)
Hiroshima Mon Amour
I Vitelloni (I wish I could have dressed like this when I was a carefree lad right out of college.)
Insomnia
The Fire Within
The Most Dangerous Game (I should just pick up the Flicker Alley Blu, I guess.)
The Naked Prey
Night Train to Munich
Onibaba
Overlord
Pépé Le Moko
Stray Dog
Throne of Blood
Spirit of the Beehive
That Hamilton Woman
Vampyr
M
Notorious (Even if it is released on Blu, I'm keeping the DVD for the Ingrid Bergman cover.)
Hamlet
Downhill Racer
Ace in the Hole
L' Avventura
L' Eclisse
Fiend Without a Face
Band of Outsiders

A handful of my Criterion DVDs that I will be in no huge rush to upgrade to Blu-ray.
Weekend (Godard)
The Hit
The Lower Depths
Slacker (The 1990s sucked the first time around.)
Black Moon (Weird weird movie...but I'll upgrade at some point way on down the line)
Hoop Dreams
Hunger (Great flick, but some things I'm in no rush to see in high def.)

I like to see Brian De Palma's Sisters upgraded for blu ray by Criterion with some actual extras this time!

So, any recommendations?

I like horror the most and I know Criterion releases lesser known films so I don't really know where to begin. It's nice to have real people recommend something than go in blind.

Thanks!

Please bear in mind, though, that just because YOU haven't heard of a particular film doesn't necessarily make it "lesser known."

I meant like films that the average moviegoer would probably not know about.

I think a title that somebody should release on Blu here in the US (and I think Criterion may be a good match) is The Dreamers by Bernardo Bertolucci. I would love a US release on this as I know Germany and Russia have one.

It is truly saddening to hear of Oshima's passing, though he wasn't a well man in recent years so it wasn't entirely surprising. His best works remain unavailable in the West, so hopefully Criterion are working on putting together a Blu-Ray set of his work for ATG (or something similar).

I think we're all still digesting the fact that Jodie Foster is single.

One of cheapest recommended ones on Amazon. Plus I really like the case design

I finally got The Hour (I remember you recommending it to me)..bought it from B&N back in mid-December and I just got it in the mail yesterday (with a broken case too, to top it off) .... so I'll finally start watching it. I didn't realize the second series already came out on blu-ray last week, it seemed like nobody talked about it. I liked Homeland's first year very much also..but kind of lost interest this past season. Really need to see Sherlock (it's easily available on netflix, I've just been lazy getting around to it)

You're right---I just meant in terms of talent as a filmmaker, there's far better young filmmakers who could use the opportunity .

Heh, more opposite opinions: I didn't like the fifth season. I loved the first four, but the fifth I wasn't a big fan of...felt a bit too directionless, like events just happened without any reason, 'explosive' moments thrown in just to entertain...although I know, the last 3 episodes did pick up a lot, and I would definitely watch that spin-off . My own favorite right now is probably Louie.
