I recently bought The Lives of Others for $19.99 at Barnes & Noble and then saw it on sale there for $12.99 the following week. I got hosed. Haha.

At any rate, The Lives of Others is one of my Top Five Films of the 2000s.

Before I had a chance to see The Lives of Others years ago, I was annoyed that it had won Best Foreign Film over Pan's Labyrinth, which I adored at the time. When I finally did see it, though, I fell in line right away and agreed that the Academy had made the right choice several times over.

I revisit The Lives of Others frequently (probably at least once every three months or so!), because it's such a splendid film with such an emotional payoff that rewards the patient viewer. It's not a horror movie, but it's more terrifying than any horror movie you'll ever see. Even more so, though, it's an inspirational tale where unsung heroes make a difference in the world.

The experience of watching The Lives of Others on Blu-ray for the first time was a revelation, because, during the scene where Wiesler is listening in on Dreymann playing the piano, a tear can be seen falling from his eye. I probably watched this movie about 50 times on DVD with my old television, but had never known that he is crying during that scene. It made quite a difference with the way that I viewed the evolution of the character.

I know The Lives of Others has a strong reputation but the subject matter just doesn't interest me so I've put off checking it out. Maybe when I'm in the mood to watch The Conversation again I'll have a double feature or something.

The Lives of Others seemed insanely dull to me when I saw the previews years ago, but I was compelled to check it out after it won the Academy Award. It's a slow burner of a movie, but it burns brightly.

This is a pretty cool article about how the artwork developed.

I'm not a big artwork on the wall kind of guy but I'd grap a print of my avatar in a second if Criterion ever offered it.
Thanks for posting the link. Very interesting.

Touchez Pas Au Grisbi
I was not aware of that, but it's unfortunate.

Touchez Pas Au Grisbi is one of the best "tough guy" films in my collection. It was quite brilliant to cast Jean Gabin and Lino Ventura in the same movie. It also goes without saying, of course, that Jeanne Moreau is too beautiful for words in the film.

I really want this film on Blu-ray somehow. I would even be tempted to jump the fence to a region free Blu-ray player if circumstances demanded it.

Touchez and Rififi are essential, 2 of my all-time favorites.

Dig your new avatar, hopefully it proves to be a good luck charm for tomorrow's announcement

Thanks. Keeping my fingers crossed, although I'm happy to wait longer for a good Blu-ray transfer.

Every time I watch Rififi I think, "I bet Michael Mann loves this film!"
I would easily consider Touchez pas au grisbi one of my favourite Criterions.

Just watched the Ballad of Narayama. Didn't come to any of my local stores and I decided to watch it free on Hulu. Great film, and visually gorgeous – woulda liked to see it on blu-ray, though now that I've seen it I don't feel really compelled to own it.

Anyway, I experienced the "encoding issue" on the Hulu version, and wow that's been overblown. I was expecting lag, it was more like the frames per second halved for a few seconds of some maple leaves. It's a thing that's vaguely unfortunate, but the idea that it would influence anybody's purchasing decision or that Criterion would offer replacement discs is crazy. And I suspected that it was a problem with the whole restoration, not Criterions fault and...

"There's not a problem with the encode of the Criterion DVD or Blu-ray release of THE BATTLE OF NARAYAMA. What is perceived to be an encoding error is actually inherent to the surviving film elements and the restored materials. It is also present in the 2007 Tartan UK release. The Criterion version is consistent with the Shochiku restoration that premiered at Cannes last year, which was the basis for the Criterion release."
Yeah, that. Probably the people who say they didn't have it just didn't notice, it's so subtle. The real tragedy is that after so much talk about this issue, and seeing it on the Hulu version, I was distracted throughout most of the movie thinking how overblown this thing had become. Now, why couldn't Criterion have cleared this up a month ago, before it got so out of hand?

3. Seriously, folks, where ARE the predictions and wishlists.

Me, I stink at this, so I'll renew my simplistic desire for Dekalog, more Bergman upgrades and a premature announcement for Linklater's Sunrise, Sunset, Midnight set. Throw in The Straight Story, Sweet Hereafter, B'tpui (sp?) (the israeli series In Treatment is based on) and Diving Bell & the Butterfly and I'll give Mulvaney my nice car.
Yes please.

I am just excited that we are likely getting The Kid this year. And, after rewatching the Circus last week, I am hoping that the tight rope new years clue was for that.

If you aren't too turned off by Von Trier's Antichrist, you should check it out too. The movie features several direct references to Tarkovsky in it.
