Speaking of Melville, I still need to watch Army Of Shadows, Le Cercle Rouge, and Leon Morin, Priest. They're high on my to watch list so I will probably watch a couple of them tomorrow (at least).

I got to thinking about this recently when I revisited Léon Morin, Priest, which also starred Emmanuelle Riva.

You and me both. I own about 4 DVD's and that's one of them. I haven't watched in a few years because I'm hoping for a blu-ray.

Melville. One of my favorites.

As much as I love Le Cercle Rouge and its pitch perfect first hour, I prefer Rififi when it comes to how the heist is executed. Hopefully Criterion will upgrade Rififi sooner than later(with the rest of the Melville and Dassin films).

Anyway, I messaged him about buying a group of them and he said if I wanted to he would sell them to me. So I sent him the list of Criterions that I was missing (it was the 33 I bought plus some of the November, December, January, and February releases - he didn't have those).

After some back and talk, he sent me this picture:

I saw most of them when they were individually listed and all were Brand New and Factory Sealed with the blue sticker (if applicable).

How much did you pay for the lot?

I agree about the outrageous price. I feel horrible for letting this slip by. I thought about buying it multiple times before I had a blu ray player. Oh well, I have not pulled the trigger in buying the studiocanal version, in hopes that criterion will re-release it (same thing with Ran).


The Third Man is one of my favorite black and white films. It has a great story, but what I like the most about the film is Robert Krasker's cinematography. It is a great film to study the use of light and shadows (especially the last chase). The shadows remind me of the german expressionist films of the 1920s and 1930s.

By the way I like your new avatar Great Owl. I always thought the opening shot of Le Samourai depicts the main character's soul than just his apartment.
I watched Colombiana (I do watch popcorn flicks once in a while) a month ago, when I saw a similar bird cage with the same type of bird (finch). Definitely a homage to Le Samourai.

Thank you! Fearless is easily her best album. The slickness of her last two albums has really put me off

I for one eagerly anticipate Colonel Blimp, the cinematography blew me away when I saw it on TCM HD. Powell & Pressburger, in my opinion, made timeless films.

Man that haul is something else! Argo & On The Waterfront sounds like a solid double feature for tonight.

It also goes a long way toward explaining why The Big Reveal never loses its punch. It was never much of a surprise to begin with and I've seen it at least a dozen times now and I still get goosebumps every time.
