Anton Corbijn, the director of The American, also made another recent film that I'm dying to see on Blu-ray someday, Control. Control is about the life of Ian Curtis, the lead singer of Joy Division who committed suicide in 1980 (and the film is largely based on Touching from a Distance, the book written by Ian Curtis's widow, Deborah Curtis).
Anton Corbijn has actually impacted my life in quite a few ways, since he is responsible for the cover art of U2's The Joshua Tree, as well as several videos by U2, Depeche Mode, Echo and the Bunnymen, and others.

I concur with everyone else that your "Criterion Haul" photo is pretty awesome. Some great finds there!
I'm a Depeche Mode fan and always loved Anton Corbijn's style. Needless to say, I loved The American. Very underrated film but it is fantastic.

Thank you! Hard to believe it's been that long. 54 years old and I have a 10 year old and a 13 year old boy. I guess film watching has helped to pass the time.

Congrats on both--

I notice there aren't as many long-term members posting.
I've noticed the same thing Coop...I haven't seen either Spidey or CCFixx in quite some time and we saw BetaMan briefly the other day. I only seem to see Shell, BohemianGraham, JCS, TJS, and PowellPressburger (after a long hiatus). I guess there is a life outside of this thread.

I am envious of a 'blind-buy' for Tree of Life.. I wish I could see this film for the first time again. I saw it twice in an art theater in Atlanta when it was first released and it was packed full of the 'general' moviegoer, assuming a Brad Pitt and Sean Penn film would be a little more exciting than this. I use 'general' moviegoer in a way that these people don't go to a film excited to see a Malick film, they just read their PEOPLE and go to see what the buzz is about. Needless to say, the audience was very disappointed and made sure their opinion was heard to every other person waiting in the line to buy tickets. Phrases like, "Worst movie ever, don't waste your money," were being spewed to anyone just waiting in line, not even particularly seeing ToL.
Tree of Life resonates with certain individuals more than it might with others, because, surprise here, movies are subjective. I connected with it completely, and consider it one of the best films I've seen. I love/fear the questions that are presented. The direct questions to God, and the indirect to the audience, if this makes sense...kinda rambling now.
Anyways, great film that needs to be seen with a complete open mind and no preconceived expectations, even though it seemed I hyped it up a lot in the previous paragraph.

I finished opening them and I took an updated picture of my entire collection.

The only ones not in the picture (because I haven't received them yet) are Chronicle Of A Summer (Pre-Ordered), Gate Of Hell (Pre-Ordered), Pina, The Qatsi Trilogy, Sansho The Bailiff (Pre-Ordered), and Trilogy Of Life.

I need to order Tin Drum and Trilogy Of Life still.

Edit: Time for Brando!

I did not know anything about that instrument until I watched The Third Man. It adds to the atmosphere.

I think an excellent movie score or soundtrack is essential for a movie to achieve grandeur.

Speaking of avatars, I revisited Fellini's 8 1/2 the other night (and wrote a rather clumsy analysis). Such a great film that I want to pause at random spots to drink in the splendor of the still frames.
Great analysis of the film on 8 1/2. As an amateur artist and writer, one becomes captivated by an idea or an ideal. Artwork is made by an idea and commitment to that idea. You can have the greatest idea, but if not committed to pursue that idea, you will eventually fail (and sometimes fail miserably). The higher you are up, the harder you fall.

I think that 8 1/2 is about the lack of commitment. Fellini not only shows Guido's lack of commitment for his artwork, but his marriage also. Does this feeling stem from being afraid of failure? What is not in film, is the start of his loss of faith in his artwork. The film begins at a spring with water that ameliorates ones illness.

La Dolce Vita also plays with this same theme.

Tara Cinemas on Cheshire Bridge Road.

I know, because that's where I saw The Tree of Life, and I don't remember it showing anywhere else in town. I saw the movie at Tara after work on the afternoon of its release, and I was mesmerized and captivated. I returned home, wrote a glowing review of the movie on my Facebook wall, and announced it as my favorite film of that year. Later on, several friends saw the film on my recommendation, and they all disliked it.

I did notice some bewildered reactions while I was at the theater, but most of the audience seemed to enjoy it. Of course, the theater was not crowded during this particular afternoon showing.

It would be funny if you and I had been watching the movie at Tara Cinemas at the same time. Small world, at any rate.

The most recent film I saw at Tara was Killer Joe. Most of the audience seemed freaked out by the film, and I can't say that I blame them. Haha.

I like this analysis! The observation about lack of commitment can be applied to other areas, because I see the same end result in marathon training if someone's heart is not fully invested.

La Dolce Vita is challenging in a similar way, but it also features captivating imagery (the statue in flight, the water fountain, the chaotic party, etc.).

That's up for debate. Each album has a different sound. The Best Day is the best song on Fearless, imo.

I'm with you on Blimp. P&P films on blu-ray are an absolute treat.
