Everyone will look for their own personal favorites in a list like this. To my eyes the most notable omission is the Three Colors Trilogy. But you have a great list, really. Well done.

Thanks

Nope, not annoying to me.

..but then, one of my top 5 favorite films is Suspiria...and that's largely due to the color. As I've said before, that film's (and other similar film's) style is what influences me the most film-wise, so I'm a huge fan of color...and really loved the use of it in Black Narcissus, so I guess it's up to individual preferences there Hey, I even love the way the color stands out in my avatar.

Yeah I really like the colors in your avatar.

It's not that I disliked the colors in Black Narcissus, but if I was watching the scene, it changed for a blue, to a green, to a gray, to a pink, and back. The colors just seemed "shaky" in my opinion.

That's 3 strip Technicolor, and unfortunately, depending on the condition of the negative, it's inherent in the prints. If even one of the 3 color strips is faded or has issues, then it will affect the entire picture. But there are many Technocolor films that have that color wobble... I assume they could possibly do a frame by frame color adjustment to fix the fluctuations, but that's pretty intensive.

Just finished Army of Shadows. I really enjoyed the movie. I'm kinda partial to WWII related movies and wasn't aware of the French Resistance to this level. Acting and directing were A+. I've added to my wishlist on Criterion. Any other movies from Jean-Pierre Melville worth watching?

I just watched Design For Living.

I wasn't a big fan of it. However, I do respect Noel Coward for challenging a lot of the traditional notions of gender at this time. Until the Women's Movement of the 1970s, a lot of people still had the same ideas of male and female roles that had plagued this country for centuries. During the 1930s especially, it was very uncommon and rare to see a woman with not one, but two men. It was taboo for this to occur, especially with sex in the mixture.

Overall, I guess it was okay, but it just wasn't for me.

Had no idea Criterion shipped with Priority Mail until I checked my tracking info. That's awesome.

Empire Magazine has been showing some Criterion love lately. Last month they reviewed On the Waterfront and this month they have a review of Badlands. Thought that was kinda cool.

Thanks TJS! Won't be likely to ever make that mistake again but like the wish list option anyway, just because it'll be fun to do. So September is likely to be the next flash-sale, from what I'm gathering?...

"On the Waterfront" came in this morning incidentally from a previous order (at the regular price, but that's cool). Kudos to Criterion for yet another really nifty artfully-done package. Looking forward to revisit this magnificent film, especially after the blu-ray reviews.

Default Flash Sales

I racked up during the Criterion Flash sale this week. How often do they do the 50% off Flash Sales and are there any other sales throughout the year?

They do one or two a year (usually random). Other sales include the B&N ones twice a year (coming hopefully in July) and equally random Amazon ones.

If you hadn't yet, I would add Rosemary's Baby and a movie I will see for first time very soon, Thin Red Line, which is my brother's all time fave movie. He and I both didn't like Seventh Seal very much though so maybe we have different tastes in movies.

They're all worth watching, in my opinion.

I'd go with Le Cercle Rouge on Blu-ray next, since it's quite similar to Army of Shadows from a stylistic standpoint. (Because of the covert nature of the Army of Shadows characters, there are a lot of parallels between that French Resistance story and Melville's crime/heist/gangster films.)

Leon Morin, Priest is a brilliant Melville film in a different way, because it is more cerebral in nature, but it is still infinitely watchable.

I cannot wait until Le Samourai hits on Blu-ray one of these days. That movie is just the epitome of cool. Everything comes together with the jazz soundtrack, the cinematography, the existentialism, and the story arc.

I prefer buying the Criterions in person from Barnes & Noble. I knew that, if On The Waterfront were less than $40 in the store, then I'd have trouble passing it up. (I did not even go to the store this afternoon.)

When I can see the Criterion title in the store and hold it in my hand to know that it is in perfect condition...that's more tempting to me.

I did, however, order quite a few Criterion titles from Amazon in December when they were all for $17.99.
