Default Newly OOP Criterion blu's

Picked up Le cercle rouge at Best Buy dot com for $24.99 minus my $10 Gift Card I received today for ordering Argo, Letter Never Sent and Cosmopolis (BB Version). Total was $17.24 w/tax and free shipping.

Picked up Last Year at Marienbad and Army of Shadows at Deep Discount dot com and used the code MELT13 to get $10 off my order. Total of $56.20 w/tax and free shipping.

Pricey, but I figured I might as well get them now before the vultures come swooping in and snatch them all up and my last resort is sky high prices on eBay.

Forgot to add that I already own Leon Morin Priest. Got it off of eBay for $16 last week.

Anyone have a suggestion of a good Criterion film to watch on the Netflix instant queue right now?

I love Charade! Do you actually recommend Tiny Furniture? Because I saw an episode of Girls once and suffice it to say that I'm not really a fan.

I don't recommend it, although I like it more than most here.

I so do not recommend it. I wasn't really a fan of the show either....and when I say I wasn't really a fan, I mean I passionately hate it.

I bought Last Year at Marienbad and Le Cercle for $52 but Criterion should at least discount $5 off of these films like they've done in the past...

I love Tiny Furniture but if you don't like Girls, you're going to hate it like a disease as it's like an extended episode.

Gonna have to see La Cercle rouge and Army of Shadows soon... don't like to blind buy but definitely want to get them if I like them, and haven't seen any Melville before.

I seem to be the only one here who really didn't enjoy Marienbad, but at least it's one less to try and check out or buy before it goes OOP...

These are both excellent films. I would suggest that if you're interested and you have the cash pick them up. If you don't like them OOP Criterion titles will be pretty easy to get your money back on.

I'm hoping that CC losing their license for Red Circle will mean we'll soon see a Studio Canal / Lionsgate US blu-ray release. I always liked the color timing on the SC release better but the UK BD is priced really expensive and you don't have any B&N type sales for the UK to snag these beauties.

I wasn't thrilled by it either...but am buying it, because of its place in film history. I'm hoping that a few more viewings will warm me up to it. And contrary to what a number of people have fed back, I think I prefer the look of the cardboard packaging. I think Spidey agrees with me on this one.

Studio Canal would be the most likely one to re-release Le Doulos given that they are the license-holders. A release in the UK only could be more likely than one in the US too, but with their recent titles SC has issued a US release a few months later in different packaging.

For some time now I've planned on picking up the SC version of Le Cercle Rouge over Criterion's for this same reason - the transfer/timing - but you're right: that disk never goes down in price, anywhere. That goes for a lot of the older titles in the SC collection.

Via CriterionCast, news from the Times of India:

Quote:
Ray's timeless classics will now be protected from the ravages of time. The Criterion Collection, which has restored some of the world's best-known classics and critically successful obscure movies like 'The Passion of Joan of Arc' (1928), M (1931), 'The Children of Paradise' (1945) apart from Chaplin films and works of Akira Kurosawa, is set to do a repeat with 18 of Satyajit Ray's movies.

Having bought the home video rights of The Apu Trilogy, Charulata, Mahanagar and Nayak among others, they are set to do "frame by frame" restoration before distributing them in the US and Canada.
Quote:
It's an honour doing a project on Satyajit Ray."
Location coordinator Abhra Bhattacharya, who is helping Abbey, says the only film whose restoration is complete so far is Jalsaghar. "From colour correction to scratch removal, the team working on this project is going all out to ensure that the films' longevity is improved. By April 2014, all other films will be restored.
