I went to see Lost in Translation at the theater on the day of release, because I had read some glowing reviews, and because I knew that the movie had an outstanding soundtrack. I loved how Lost in Translation arrived at an emotionally-exhausting, yet fulfilling conclusion, because the movie could have gone in a hundred different directions with the premise and all of them would have sucked. The film hits all the right notes, though, and never missteps. I am not huge on Sofia Coppola's other movies, but this one hit the mark.

I bought Lost in Translation on DVD as soon as it was released, and showed it to several friends. Some of them got it, and some of them did not. It's been a long time since I watched my DVD, so it was treat to revisit this last night and watch the Blu-ray. The movie looks miles better on Blu-ray than it did on DVD, but I agree with the main reviewer on this site that one cannot help but think that the movie could have received a slightly better transfer. As is, though, this one looks great.

Lost in Translation is one of those movies that begs for a Criterion release at some point in time.

I went through my CDs and shook the dust off the movie soundtrack to Lost in Translation. I am listening to it right now as I type. My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain for the win. It's a great CD.

I'm glad I follow this topic, so I am aware of the titles going OOP. Literally, Last Year at Mariebad and Army of Shadows were both in my top 10 next Criterions to get, but I was holding off until July. Now I think I'll grab them within a week or so (when the income tax return coems in). And I guess Le Cercle Rouge as well.

If you are not a fan of Girls, than by all means, do NOT watch Tiny Furniture. You will hate it...

I have to agree, honestly. I ended up checking it out on a whim and really enjoyed it.

While I'd consider Le Cercle Rouge to be my favorite Melville film, I'd probably go with Army Of Shadows if it's been on your to-buy list. Le Cercle Rouge has been released overseas as part of the StudioCanal Collection, so it's possible (I won't say likely, thanks to Lionsgate, but possible, since they still are releasing titles from that line) that it'll be released on Blu-Ray in the US from them. Army Of Shadows hasn't been so lucky.

If possible, though, I'd recommend getting both...

Yeah.
As much as I'd love to see that happen, I don't expect it to. Both Sunrise and Sunset are controlled by Warner Bros, and I realize that Badlands and the pre-Code title Criterion has are anomalies...

Cosign all of this 100%

Owl - you have a great taste in musi. Do you listen to Phoenix by chance as well? They are on a couple of Sofia Copala's films soundtracks and the singer is married to Sofia. They are a great band.

Yeah, we can expect a couple fake titles to be announced

Ooh, or maybe they can announce that everything already released is going out of print next week. Even the ones that haven't come out yet.

Oh! How about...they're switching to DVD-only releases...

Thanks!

I like Phoenix, and I love their song on that soundtrack. I wouldn't call myself a massive fan, but I've got a copy of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix around here someplace. I did not realize that the singer was married to Sofia Coppola. That's pretty cool.

I'm hoping that they will announce a Criterion release of Bio-Dome at long last.

(In all honesty, I will own Bio-Dome if and when it is ever released on Blu-ray.)

Over the course of several B&N sales I've had Marienbad and The Last Metro in my hands several times and while they weren't exactly mangled they were a little too beat up to get all the way to the counter.

In fact, for a while there I was convinced I was picking up the exact same copies twice a year.

Still, I suppose I need to get over that.

I just finished watching Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. It's quite a remarkable Blu-ray, and I had a lot of fun revisiting this movie for the first time in a couple of years.

I love the tip of the hat to Henri-Georges Clouzot's Le Corbeau (show on Shosanna Dreyfus's theater marquee), and the possible tip of the hat to Jean-Pierre Melville (when Shosanna told Landa that her father's name was "Jean-Pierre").

It's a tie between Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds for my favorite Tarantino film. I want to say that Inglourious Basterds is the better movie, but I have so many memory ties to Pulp Fiction from over the years.

I liked but didn't totally love Inglorious Basterds but got chills when the Bowie kicked in.

That alone was worth the price of admission.

(and yeah, it is a great disc...definitely a treat for the senses)

Oh, hey...that was another Centurion for me.

(I mean, I don't dislike it, but I'm just not a big fan of Tarantino)

Well, since it's practically impossible to find ones in stores that look perfect, settling for them seems reasonable to me.

I hear ya Octagon...Playtime also made it into my hands and out more times than I like to think about. Glad to hear that it's being reissued in the near future. I was lucky/able to have my local B&N put aside the very last copy of Marienbad. There are two stores within 10 miles of home and this store had the only copy. I checked with my friend and contact in the Media Dept. and he said that he checked with their local warehouse and that there were no copies to be had. I guess this is turning into the next "The Third Man". As luck would have it, it's a cardboard copy in pretty good shape. I'll bet the farm that this copy has floated around this same store for a few years. Turns out, someone was inquiring about it, shortly after I had them put it aside for me. Sometimes, timing is everything. I would assume that those would be more in demand than the later issues in the Scanovo cases?

I'm about to watch Last Year at Marienbad on Blu-ray for the first time (I've seen it several times on DVD.). It's a rainy afternoon here, so nothing else to do.

I finally got around to finishing Following the other day and I'm still not sure if I'm totally on board with all the masterpiece rhetoric but yeah, it was awfully good.

This will sound like a left-handed compliment but it's actually not - I ultimately had some pretty significant issues with plot but absolutely did not care because the atmosphere and performances were so good.

It actually had a bit of a Hitchcock feel in that way.

And it looked absolutely fantastic. This will be Exhibit A whenever anybody says 'eh, blah blah blah was shot in 16mm, it wouldn't really benefit from an HD upgrade'.

As for my plot issue...

[Show spoiler]I have no quarrel with elaborate frame-ups themselves. That's a time-honored noir/thriller convention. Body Heat used it very effectively. In this case though the frame-up was very well-executed and basically pretty believable it seemed - unless I missed something and that's definitely possible - entirely pointless. Why not just kill her? Why go to all that trouble to set somebody up for a crime that probably wouldn't generate much attention and would likely go unsolved even if it did?

Like I said, not a deal breaker but if I was at all on the fence to begin with that's the kind of thing that would generally leave a sour taste.
