I'm bummed Criterion lost the rights to Forbidden Games. That StudioCanal region B disc looks pretty amazing. Hopefully they will release it in region A.

Just ordered a used like new copy of Leon Morin Priest on Blu-Ray. Made sure the description had stated it was in original case with original artwork/book too.

Also LOVE the transfer on the Repo Man blu-ray. Also saw Seven Samurai and Tokyo Drifter for the first time Monday. Missed out before Monday as both are wonderful.

I agree. Forbidden Games is too brilliant not to see a release on these shores.

Isn't Naked Lunch basically about how prescription drugs are more pervasive and harmful than illicit drugs?

Well I sure missed a lot due to going to sleep. Don't the rest of you?

I wanna get involved in this Criterion weekly discussion? Have we finalised the films yet?

Where do you live, if I might ask? I'm in Canada, and and CC titles I'm on the fence about, I've been able to find on YouTube, Netflix, and Hulu via Unblock Us. It's 5 bucks a month plus tax. I don't have Hulu+, just the regular one. I'm also able to get BBC iPlayer, which I use for Doctor Who. It's pretty rare that I have to swab the decks to get a Criterion title. I also own quite a few, although I'm on hiatus from buying for the next few months due to my new baby I bought on Saturday.

Also, does it have to be the criterion release of the film? Yeah the PQ and special features might not be on the other version you rent/borrow from the library, but at least you'd have a copy of the film to view, as I thought the whole point of the exercise was to discuss the film, and not packaging, PQ, etc, like most people do.

I, too, would like to join, although I can't guarantee I will be able to participate every week. My nine month old sometimes makes watching movies unpredictable

I agree. It's quite beautiful. Not to mention, it's Dunst's best performance to date.

I was neutral to it. Something about it kept me intrigued, despite not understanding it.

Hopefully well discuss a bunch of 2013 titles after the B&N sale.
I actually really liked those two as well. I need to rewatch Cosmopolis as it was a bit hard to swallow on the first watch.

Congrats! I have a ten week old, so I know where you're at

Actually, him coming along has lead to our starting to buy Criterion films, since we can't go out any more, it's basically all of our entertainment.

I haven't heard if Unblock before, but I am sure going to check it out now! Australia's broadband (I'm in Perth, Western Australia, by the way) isn't even nearly as fast as yours, and I'm not convinced Hulu will work so great for us, but I will investigate it...

I don't think it has to be the Criterion release, but of course you get the extras that will help with background info etc that also might play into your thoughts and enjoyment of the films.

Speaking of Artificial Eye, the latest line-up from them has made me very happy: Atom Egoyan's Exotica! They're also releasing his Calendar, The Adjuster and Speaking Parts.
You'll also see they're releasing Olivier Assayas' Aprčs mai and three films from Satyajit Ray.

I was hoping that criterion would release Apu Trilogy by Satyajit Ray.
Thanks for the nod Fellini...I'm still a novice in a lot of areas, but have learned a great deal from all of the vets that have been frequenting here over the last 5 years. Although it's helped to further empty my wallet, the decision to go region free was a big step in expanding my cinematic horizons. Have you found/bought a region free player yet?

I can't say if Criterion will release it first...but SOMEONE will get around to the Apu Trilogy. Kudos to AE for their efforts to release Ray films and many thanks to Spidey for introducing me to his films and his informed input on all things "World Cinema".

Thank you! This is far from his best film, but you could see that the seed had been planted and you could really see his sensibilities and how his incredible talent and insight would develop.

Personally, I would have placed Paths of Glory near the top of the list. THAT was the film that really showed us his chops and got him noticed by his peers.

I also disagree with him on Eyes Wide Shut, as that is my least favourite Kubrick. I just can't get around Tom Cruise being in the film. Can't stand him as an actor.

I honestly don't know how to rank the Kubricks without offending anyone, as I also didn't enjoy 2001; it made me very uncomfortable watching it. I know I will never go to space, but it did make me afraid of suffocating/freezing to death. It's not a bad film, it's just one that I can't watch too often.
Kubrick was the director that broke my cherry...for crying out loud, he blew me away in 1968 at the ripe age of 10. And as much as I want to love it, I respect Eyes Wide Shut for what it is. Cruise does a respectable job...thank God Kidman helped to move the film along. I would put "Paths" at the top of the list, based on it's early impact, though 2001 will always be a special film for me.

Ah, gotcha. I'm on a 7Mbps/640kb connection right now, and it can be laggy at peak times, but it's only if I'm at my parents' place, and everyone is streaming Netflix and/or websurfing. Next week I'm getting 20Mbps/15Mbps for the same price once I move to my new apartment.

And I think you misunderstood about my baby. I don't even have a significant other at the moment, nor have I ever been pregnant. My baby is a badly needed new car. It's expensive, but in the long run, it will be far cheaper than a child. I'm also in the process of moving to a new apartment, and my rent's going up by 80 bucks as well. I have more than enough films to watch, plus with the unblock us, I can have Hulu, BBC, and every region of Netflix available. Also, my internet is still going to be uncapped, even after I upgrade to the fibreop. I'm not going to be hurting for films.

It would be near the top, but I'm not sure if it would be my top. I'm probably going to go with the popular vote and put Dr. Strangelove at the top. I know plenty of others love A Clockwork Orange, but I read the unedited edition of the book, and feel like Kubrick missed the point a little. He seemed to focus more on the ultra-violence, and because he adapted the edited copy, he's missing the last chapter in the film adaptation, which kills some of the symbolism Burgess was going for. I know a lot of people hated that last chapter, but it honestly does make sense. I think most people who rank ACO high haven't read the book to be honest.

Such an underappreciated film! How can you not love R Lee? And the ironic thing is, that he was originally only an adviser on the film. He didn't like the way the writing was going for the boot camp scenes and would up rewriting most of the screenplay. Kubrick liked him so much, that he was given the part of the drill sergeant, that was originally given to the "maniac" firing off the machine gun in the helicopter. This is also the film that secured the career of Matthew Modine and started the career of Vincent D'Onofrio (who praises Kubrick in interviews and gives him credit for launching his career).

Underappreciated? I thought this was considered one of the top Kubrick films? It's certainly near the top in my rankings.

Not true at all. I've read the book a dozen times at least and would rate Clockwork Orange #3. After Dr. Strangelove and FMJ.

You missed the keyword in my sentence, MOST. I know more people who haven't read the book that rate it highly than than those who have read it.
