My lack at any emotional reaction to the film is a big one. It's one of the only examples where finding a film beautiful visually isn't enough for me, because despite that, I still feel uninterested while watching. The overall reaction to the film makes me keep wanting to give it another chance, to like it more.

Ditto on Bergman. Stunning beauty plus talent to match. I never have made the Jacob connection but you are spot on.

Thanks Abdrewes...some Ingrid Bergman fan I am...never heard of this and now after reading up on it, I want it just as much on blu....so excited for BFI's release of Journey to Italy. Caught Journey to Italy the other day on TCM.

The only other Rosselini/Bergman collaboration I've seen is Europa 51. Needless to say, I was pretty impressed. I take it Journey to Italy is a much more lighthearted take on traveling abroad.

Oh, that's totally understandable even without the Notorious/Spellbound connections.

Gaslight feels very much like a Hitchcock film.

A vulnerable heroine trapped in a claustrophobic environment, tricks with light/perspective and plenty of mind-****ing?

What about that doesn't scream Hitchcock?

Don't feel bad. The film has the same effect on me. Beautiful film no doubt, but leaves me cold.

Would love to see Criterion get a hold of Gaslight

Quite...I should say despite the talk of divorce between her and her husband...I don't want to ruin it for you...beautiful shots of Italy throughout.

I'm about to finish revisiting Notorious. Woo hoo!

Spellbound is one of the last 11 still-unwatched Blu-rays that I have left to watch in my collection. I saw it before on DVD, but am pumped up to see it on Blu-ray this weekend.

I had favorable, but somewhat-less-than-ecstatic reactions to both Wings of Desire and Paris, Texas after my first viewings of both films. During subsequent viewings, however, I warmed up immensely to both of them. I was pretty emotional during my last viewing of Wings of Desire. Probably because I was having a tough day that day, and was cheered up by identifying with some of the forlorn voiceovers from some of the random mortals in the film.

I just watched The African Queen (a perfect example of an adventure film) and I want The Big Sleep even more on Blu-ray now (a perfect example of a film-noir film). I really hope Criterion puts it out and sooner than later.

I'm surprised you weren't put off by the special effects I jest, I jest.

But yes, you are 100% correct on the second point. The Big Sleep is a great noir.

I had the same question. He has a top ten favorite criterion??? My best guess is he probably just stopped by because he is fan of the criterion company.

Bogart for the win.

I own The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and The African Queen on Blu-ray. Outstanding movies, the whole lot of 'em.

I'll probably buy The Enforcer on Blu-ray in the not-too-distant future, and I'm hoping for a Blu-ray release of Key Largo one day.

High Sierra is very underrated too!

I say Warner or whoever releases a nice Bogey set like that of Marilyn Monroe.

The pleasure was all mine! Such a great film.

By the way, that's a fine avatar choice. I haven't seen Nightbreed in forever, and am interested in hearing more about the Uncut version. I was a big Clive Barker fan when I was in high school, much to the chagrin of my parents, and Cabal, from which Nightbreed was adapted, was one of my favorite stories of his.
