The Chabrol everybody should check out ommediately is Le Boucher (The Butcher). Such a dark, twisted, Hitchcockian thriller. Not a second wasted in that film.
While I like almost everything I've seen by Godard, Truffaut, and Resnais more (haven't dug into Varda's work yet), I do still think it was a spectacular film. I'm always on the look out for new films, so I'll seek out Le Boucher in the near future.

If thrillers are your game, you'll have a blast with Le Boucher. I can totally imagine the film garnering legions of fans if Criterion releases it on BluRay.

I have also heard his 1995 film La Ceremonie is great. I'm sure Dr. Svet can point to other notable Chabrol films...

I sent one to someone who ordered me 3 titles (one of the $31.98 msrp ones, and 2 of the $39.99 ones) during a B&N 50% off sale.... With coupons etc, it's possible that he got my copy of The Third Man for about $30 or so....

Someone may come through for you, otherwise keep your eyes peeled at out-of-the-way used record/movie stores.

I went through a period of not watching many older black and white films but have gotten back into the swing of things and I'm hooked yet again.

The Third Man was such an enjoyable watch. I can imagine re-watching it many times in the future and when I get the time next, I'll be digging into the special features. The video and audio may be inferior but boy, does the studio canal release come packed with a pretty decent selection of special features (almost 6 hours including the audio commentary).

I'd like to dream about the possibility of Criterion getting the rights back one day but I know that's not very realistic. The Third Man seems to be a pretty good seller for Studio Canal. I don't imagine they want to get rid of it.

I'm going to try and just deal with owning this one. Yes, it bothers me quite a lot knowing I could be watching the best looking release and enjoying certain special features I'm interested in but can I justify spending about $200 when I just got my studio canal version for quite literally 10 times less shipped? No. I'm pretty poor right now lol

On the other hand... If criterion never get the rights back, it's fair to assume their release is only going to continue going up in value the more scarce they become, yes? That's a pretty depressing thought.

Just going to throw it out there. If anyone's got a copy they're not crazy about and would be happy to part with it for a good price, feel free to PM me.

Anyway, excellent film. The only thing that I can fault it on is the annoying little German boy. If I could, I would go back in time and become someone important in the industry just so I could get inside directors heads and advise them that obnoxious kids are not cute kids.

Orson Welles really stole the show as per usual. I really must try to continue seeking out good film-noirs to add to my collection. It's one of my favourite genres and I just don't have enough of them.
I saw it through Netflix on Blu ray. Nom

As far as blind-buying goes, I'd be lying if I said I hadn't done it many times. Actually, as far as buying the entire 'collection' is concerned, I look at it as a sort of homework...... you don't always appreciate it initially, but you can often look back and be glad you did. You have to watch all of the films though, which may be a key component many are missing who buy for other reasons (to make a nice looking shelf for instance)
I've certainly discovered that purchasing the whole collection is much easier than watching the whole collection. Not enough hours in the day sometimes.

Hey guys

I wanted to leave a quick note that Rene Clement's (Purple Noon) And Hope to Die is out on DVD in the UK. I finally had a chance to take a look at it and the presentation is indeed very good.

Of course, a very good gangster film with the great Jean-Louis Trintignant. With a special appearance by the beautiful Lea Massari.

I don't recall this film ever appearing on an English-friendly DVD in North America, or elsewhere for that matter. I will leave a couple of photos if anyone is interested (and will leave another post in the DVD section later on).

P.S.

The Cohen Collection is also releasing on Blu-ray Rene Clement's The Damned. Gaumont already released the film in France, but it isn't English-friendly.

And a note to "visitors" reading this thread: a Blu-ray release of a certain Louis Malle film with Lea Massari will very much be appreciated

New Wave Films in England are releasing it later this year. So if it doesn't get a US release you can import it.

Edit: I had some extra time, so I saw a critically panned film that is much lengthier.

No worries.

I pride myself on my highbrow Criterion tastes, and I would like to think that I'm an enlightened moviegoer.
However...
I'm totally addicted to my Blu-ray of Dirty Mary Crazy Larry/Race with the Devil. Especially Race with the Devil.

One blind buy I had considered was the The BRD Trilogy, but I see it's now out of print. If you snooze, you loose.

But.. I noticed that 2 (THE MARRIAGE OF MARIA BRAUN and VERONIKA VOSS) of the three films are on Hulu (through Criterion).

So, before I put money down for a used copy, what are folk's inklings about a future blu release? I know the minute I find a copy of the set, the blu is gonna be announced.

Guess I can make do with Hulu... or buy the DVD and sell it later... decisions decisions...

New to criterions,

currently own The Thin Red Line and Benjamin Button

With the next b&n sale, plan to pick up several more (got $175 in b&n gift cards to use towards the promo)

definitely will pick up the following:
The Game
Rosemary's Baby
Ride with the devil
12 angry men
anatomy of a murder
seven samurai

also leaning towards

badlands
repo man
on the waterfront

depending on how coupons usage works out, hopefully will have room for a few more titles, so based on the titles listed above (or any from my collection), any suggestions? thanks in adavance

Just finished Dazed and Confused which I haven't seen since I was in middle school.

This was one of the greatest film viewings I've had in a very long time. Usually I'm watching the runtime to see when a movie is going to end but this film had me glued from beginning to end. I couldn't be happier with the PQ.

This movie meant so much to me when I became a freshman as I always got along with the upper class men. I love the social commentary this movie provides for the way we love our lives and choose to become something someday in that short lifetime.

Criterion confirmed that the reason it is out of print is because they are doing a reissue/upgrade.

Edit. And if you don't mind settling for DVD releases you should buy the UK versions instead. They use the same transfers and you could probably buy all four box sets with the money it would cost you for the Criterion DVDs which is 24 films for the price of three!
