They've done it plenty of times, I believe. It's always a thrown-up-in-the-air type of situation.

They haven't in a while. They also used to announce titles in the early morning. They don't do that anymore either.

You're right about the second point. Either way, I'm optimistic.

This for the suggestions. I decided to go with Interlude... couldn't pass up the 14.99 price tag. I'm sure I'll get Monika eventually too.

I know it's a long shot but does anyone know if 12 Angry Men works with the "Stop, Top Menu" trick?

It's been found, that those with Region B players (UK etc) can play some of the Region A locked Criterion titles. An error shows up when they put it in, and then they can press "Stop" and then "Menu" and the regular menu pops up and allows them to play the disk.

Seems (so far I guess) it just works on Panasonic and Samsung players....

I'd be worried that any updating of firmware etc. would make this all go away though. I would think with the falling prices, buying a region-free or another Region A player would be in people's best interest.

I had them both on DVD and I watched both of them for the first time last night, back to back.

I thought Sunset was better, but I enjoyed Sunrise, as well.

I think both are great. But I like Sunset more because it builds off of the first one, further going into detail about issues of memory, life experience, philosophy, etc.
[Show spoiler] The amazing thing is that the 9 years they spent apart felt very real, thus I had as big of an emotional reaction to the second part.

Same here. I absolutely love Summer Interlude one of my favourite Bergman films.

Couldn't agree more. The car ride and the song were my favorite parts.

Oh yes, the scene at her apt. had me in tears. Mauve I respond to it more because it is more existential. Hell, at one point they talk about the last thing they would do If the world was about to end.

Years ago, I waited and waited for Criterion to jump into DVDs and then Blus...
at one point I thought "Yeah! Get 'em all as they come out!"
Ugh... right. Not that it would be that hard to buy one or two titles a month (dunno if I could do five), but I quickly woke up to the fact that I wouldn't want them all! I've seen many on TV, rentals, theatrically, etc and some just aren't for me. They're mostly all good to great films (with a few crappy ones), but I just don't need to own them all, since I would would never want to re-watch all of them.

To those who want a complete collection... knock yerselves out. Less to dust for me.

FYI - Third Man shows up on TCM pretty reguarly. Check their site for when it might be showing next.

I'd definitely watch a movie like The Third Man before deciding if spending an extra $200 is worth getting a Criterion versus "settling" for the Studio Canal version

Thanks! Guess I'll watch the two available on Hulu, and wait for the blus.

Edit. And if you don't mind settling for DVD releases you should buy the UK versions instead. They use the same transfers and you could probably buy all four box sets with the money it would cost you for the Criterion DVDs which is 24 films for the price of three!

but a collection of all criterion movies (or blurays) might be the best looking bluray shelf ever.

You ever make an eBay bid that was a little bit too high and were happy when you got outbid because you jumped the gun? That's what happened to me with a criterion blu, I really dodged a bullet there. The blu in question was the last year at marienbad.

One of my local B&N still has it in stock, but I'm waiting for the 50% off sale next month before I go grab it. I'm not even sure if I'd like it, but since it's OOP I might as well grab it if it is still available when the sale rolls around.

Wasn't "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" rumored during the New Years 2013 newsletter?

Hoping that is announced this month.
