I could see it happening at some point.

I saw Elephant at the theater a few years ago, and it was quite an experience. I'm not sure if I'd want to see the movie multiple times on Blu-ray, but it was nonetheless fascinating.

So excited for the upcoming B&N sale! I was wondering what everyone is going to be picking up over the duration of the sale? I'm definitely picking up 12 Angry Men, Kiss Me Deadly and The Killing because those were last on my list to pick up last time. I can't wait to watch those!

If I'm able to get in on the Buy 2 Get 1 Free overlap, then I'm gonna bite on:

Solaris
Cronos
Bottle Rocket
The Magician
The Game
Wild Strawberries
Brazil
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Repo Man
Traffic
Antichrist
Harakiri
The Seventh Seal
The Kid With a Bike
On The Waterfront

...If the overlap doesn't work, then I'm going to have to drastically cut this list down.

Not Criterion related but:

What is everyone's opinion on Baraka and Samsara? I've seen neither but heard great things. They are on sale this week and I'm thinking about picking them up.

I own and enjoy them both. I think I prefer Baraka but both are excellent.

Be aware that there might be an overlap between the 3 for 2 and the 50% off sale. It might be worth staying up a but late on Monday night.

As far as other classic theaters in the area, I just went to the Manor Theater last week for the first time to see Before Midnight and I've been the the Hollywood and Oaks theaters a couple of times before.

That's awesome to see another U2 fan here (and a Pittsburgh one, at that). I have been to your site a couple of times before. I assume you've seen them live before? I saw them on the 360 tour in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
Oh I feel like an old man now (i'm 34), since I was part of the Pgh Filmmakers organization back in my early 20s. I used to rent cameras from their equipment office but those days are long over. I have been going to their various theaters for upwards of 12-15 years now though. The Manor is just a few blocks from where I live and I love how they redesigned the theater last year with the new seats, new digital projection system, new sound and lighting system and new lobby with the wine bar and leather couches. I've been meaning to see Before Midnight but they cancelled the late show (9:30'ish) so the latest screening is now like 7:20pm or something. The Oaks theater is awesome sometimes for their midnight matinees (although the Manor was doing this too recently). The Hollywood theater is also really kick-ass with all the great films they're showing there recently. I missed out on The Source Family but I'll bet it will come to blu-ray.

Regarding U2, I saw them on their Popmart, Elevation, Vertigo and 360 tours. My first U2 concert was Pittsburgh Popmart at the old Three Rivers Stadium. I went by myself but I'll never forget how cool the stage was.

Seems like a good time to mention that I'd love an extras laiden Criterion release of Rattle and Hum.
I recently considered buying the out of print Rattle and Hum BD, but I wonder if Criterion would pick that one up. I'm not sure that film is really an essential documentary unless one would think that a band at the height of their pretentiousness would make for an "important" film.

I've listened to the Pittsburgh PopMart bootleg. I've heard that the stadium was over halfway empty. Those early shows suffered with Bono's vocals but they got much better as the tour went on. Plus it's PopMart, so it was brilliant either way.
Yes, I was there! It was quite empty but I didn't notice cause I was standing on the floor (GA) with a lot of fans. I don't even remember the quality of the performance, but I did write a long, biased review back then (I was only 19) about how "extraordinary" it was. I just loved that giant screen and yellow Mcdonalds-shaped arch. Popmart was an utter failure but it sure was bold.

That's uncanny. I just put Baraka and Samsara in my Amazon shopping cart a few days ago. I saw Samsara at the Manor theater here (local theater) and sat in the 3rd row. I was just about blown away. I saw Baraka about 10 years ago on DVD and need to re-visit it again. I totally recommend both films though. They both were mastered in 8k! That is beyond reference quality video.

For the most part, I agree, but that's also only thinking of traditional narratives.. However, there are plenty of pieces of art that stray form the norm that are (to some) perfectly amazing precisely because they are different. It's kind of like saying Pollock's paintings aren't good because they are abstract and don't replicate the real world.

It's certainly personal preference, but film is a visual medium, and I've occasionally been swept along with a film that relies more on visuals than a concrete story. Same with books — some people can thoroughly enjoy a plotless character study as long as the prose is imaginative and well-written.

I'd personalyl rather have a beautifully shot film with less story than an badly shot one with tons of story. Since, again, film is a visual medium first and everything else second.

When does the B&N sale start?
Anyway, I'll be able to afford 2 Blurays probably like last year, so:

1) Charade (for sure)
2) Badlands (haven't seen it) or Lady Vanishes or On the Waterfront.

I wish Seconds had been released to get this!
