im not sure if i should get "the Last emperor" from criterion or the japanese release, thats way more expensiv but has the longer cut .

does someone actually prefer the new aspect ratio and the shorter cut?
It would've be nice if Criterion had included both cuts. Maybe one day....

yep. but i think i will get the criterion release since the japanese release has no eng subs and i prefer to watch movies with eng subs and dub (works better for me since im not nativ english speaking)
and the criterion release has a lot of supplements as well, the japanese release is kinda expensiv too

after changing my order like 7 times i think i have it ready to pull the trigger:

The Last emperor
Rosemary's Baby
Hunger
Au Revoir les enfants
The Seventh Seal
Solaris
Ballad of Narayama
Life of Oharu

was just a question that i ask myself alot recently.
Sometimes I feel like this's some sort of 80's public service ad:
"Criterion blind-buying destroys lives...You're throwing away money that could be used to buy cocaine."

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I think I'm gonna go with Fanny and Alexander and hold out for a blu-ray upgrade of the trilogy.

You're not going to regret that purchase! One of he best films I've ever seen and Criterion's BD is magnificent. I'm also holding for a BD upgrade of the trilogy, hopefully we'll see it at the end of the year or early next year.

I really hope that a "Before Trilogy" is announced. Please make it happen.

This, this, this. Although if this were to happen, I imagine it would be in November.

The window for limited releases is usually 4-5 months right? So November sounds right.

Those screens of the region B release of Purple Noon look a bit washed out and a bit smudged/DNR'd to me.

Anyhow, can anybody help me pick 2 titles from this list?

Au Revoir Les Enfants
Days of Heaven
Hunger
The Ice Storm
Tokyo Drifter
Wild Strawberries

At the moment I'm leaning towards Tokyo Drifter and Wild Strawberries but I'm unsure. Is Tokyo Drifter a decent gangster/crime film? The Ice Storm looks interesting too but I'm not sure if it'll appeal to me.

The DVD version has both cuts but for some reason Criterion didn't want to put the long one on the BD saying something that they believe the short one is the preferred version or something like that.

Was just catching up. Like now. The Sony blu-ray seems to be the way to go with Life Of Brian, though I haven't viewed it.

Yes but people still report getting the uncorrected discs every so often and afaik there are no external indications of first or second pressing for either.

Short answer: hope for the best and check your discs.

Yes there is but I don't remember what it is specifically. (I've got both but still haven't sent my discs in)

Somebody else can verify but I think the corrected discs say second pressing or something like that.
