Weird, I just read Sliver last night. And the book was a quite a bit better than I remember the movie being. Which is actually a little unusual for Ira Levin. He's fantastic but he's also had extremely good luck with screen (big and small) adaptations.

Sliver is the only one I out and out didn't like (I blame Billy Baldwin but it's been a loooooooong time since I saw the movie, I'll probably give it another chance).

The Matt Damon Dillon A Kiss Before Dying was okay and most (Rosemary's Baby, the Robert Wagner A Kiss Before Dying, Deathtrap, The Trouble With Sergeants) were absolutely fantastic. Even The Stepford Wives and The Boys From Brazil had a certain campy charm.

I just read the Blu-ray.com review of The Image, and I glanced at a few clips online.
Gentlemen, you had my curiosity, but now you have my attention.

I'm also curious as to why my Blu-ray of the Hammer film, Twins of Evil, is not considered an erotic movie, especially compared to some of the movies that I have seen in that category here. Odd... Twins of Evil is campy, but it could certainly go into the erotic category as well.

You should. The bluray looks absolutely *brilliant. Probably the best film to feature Amanda Seifreid, so it's well worth adding to the library.*

It is. I've seen that one, but I don't remember if I've seen it edited or not..
Sex scenes, decent visuals...I'm in!*

The unrated cut has the full three way scene with Collin Firth, Kevin Bacon, and some woman. After seeing 'This Film us Not yet rated' (overall a kind of disappointing doc), I had to see the Egoyan film. And it did not disappoint. Twisty as hell and wonderfully shot too.*

Side Note: I can't wait to revisit 'The Sweet Hereafter' in HD. Thanks again iScottie!

Showgirls...

Some college friends and I went to see that on the weekend of release, because we had always enjoyed watching Elizabeth Berkley in Saved By the Bell (and any indie credibility that I once had in this here thread is now gone).

Showgirls was really not...good. I did love Gina Gershon, though.

Gina Gershon was my favorite thing about that old Tom Cruise movie, Cocktail. That movie is an admitted guilty pleasure of mine. Man...I loved the 80s.

I'm not even kidding, I'd consider it one of my favorite films ever (I pick some odd choices). You should really look into it. The blu-ray looks amazing.

I think Showgirls is a Great, Great Satire.

I am a Gina Gershon fanboy too. Can you answer me this, for it has been quite some time since I saw Coctail: How much screen time does Gina get in that film? I wanna ensure my $7.88 is not wasted.

Hello, I recently purchased the disc Secret Sunshine. A great Korean film but it did not come with a booklet. I exchanged it for another copy but that also did not come with a booklet. Could anyone tell me who owns the disc if in fact it's supposed to have a booklet? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This is a problem... And you need to fix ASAP! Endlessly quotable. Used to throw Showgirls parties in college.

Gina Gershon probably has less than ten minutes of screen time, but
[Show spoiler]her character contributes to a rift between the two major actors that changes the plot course of the movie forever after. This was back in the 1980s, before the "bros before hoes" ethos came into popularity, and it doesn't end well.

She's pretty amazing in the movie, though.

EDIT:
[Show spoiler]Maybe that's a sexist ethos anyway. After all, similar rifts occur in films like Band of Outsiders.

There's actually a video on Dailymotion that features all of her scenes adjacent to one another. The scenes are not all consecutive in the movie, but they're quite close together.

Thanks for saving me $7.88....although those bar tricks were quite fun as I recall. Any compilation videos of those?

Paul Verhoeven, the director of Showgirls, is not known for intellectually-stimulating films, yet Criterion did release Robocop on DVD in the 20th century. Does this mean we might see another Verhoeven film coming to the collection in the foreseeable future?

I'm with The Great Owl though... its not really that good a film. Sure, Gina Gershon is great though. The movie is so poorly acted and at many times, over-acted.

Speaking of Saved by the Bell, I'm friends with the writer/producer of that TV show (he also was the writer of the film St. Elmos Fire).

B&N are ordering me another copy. Hopefully it was just a bad bunch that didn't have the booklet. But I'll have to wait until next week to find out and then if I have to I'll contact Criterion. Thanks for the rapid reply. I see the booklet was listed in the bluray review as well.

You're welcome! I think a few months ago somebody else on here said they encountered the same problem with that film's release...but I can't remember if they ever followed up on that or who it was.

While I'm strong proponent of Starship Troopers being a satire, I just can't buy Showgirls as being bad on purpose.

For one thing, Verhoven has always been vocal about the fact that ST is what it is as a joke, but I have never seen him describe Showgirls that way.

Showgirls is hilarious camp the same way as The Black Dahlia or Southland Tales. It doesn't mean I don't enjoy the hell out of it. But it is way more like The Room than it is Spinal Tap.

That said, I think one of Gina Gershon's super powers is to understand immediately what kind of movie she is in, and then swing for the fences. She seem pretty much bullet proof.

Oh, also,
[Show spoiler]"everybody got AIDS n' shit."

Since some of you are talking about erotic cinema I thought I'd drop my two cents on some I didn't see mentioned:

"Sex and Lucia" and "Cashback." They're both pretty dreamy and have well constructed stories.
