Secret Sunshine was the only release I ever bought that lacked a booklet. I contacted Mulvaney and Criterion immediately sent a replacement. I don't think I ever mentioned it on this thread, though, so our numbers must be legion. I guess something went wrong at the factory.

Anyone have any insight on A Christmas Tale or Summer Hours?

I've been buying a bunch of French criterion's lately, and I was interested in snatching these up soon.

I found Summer Hours well worth the price. What's not to like with Juliette Binoche.

I'd go with Summer Hours, which I found to be a charming little film with a real point behind it.

A Christmas Tale I wasn't a huge fan of the first time I saw it, but it's gotten better with subsequent viewings. Plus, it has a great cast.

Not necessarily always thrillers, but you have a great taste in cinema and will appreciate what they have to offer:

DVD

BLU-RAY

I trust you have already seen these two films:

I greatly dislike a good deal of those ^ (Exterminating Angels, Crash, etc) but I will say "Lust Caution" and "Betty Blue" are definitely worth a watch.

Also, a bit along those lines... "The Unbearable Lightness of Being." It's not a "thriller" but it has Binoche!

Pro-B, White Dang, everybody... thanks for the suggestions. I have bookmarked your posts for future reference.

I have seen six (and own four) of those releases above. But now I now feel like a fool for waiting this long to snatch some of them. Namely, Elles.

Another side note: is In the Cut the only film above to feature oversaturated cinematography? That's the first thing that pops out about that fine Jane Campion thriller. I ask because I am a fan of that particular look. Everything from Wong Kar-Wai to Tony Scott, it's always a plus (provided they are lenses just right for not everybody can do it).

Personally, I was underwhelmed by Elles. It's too much of a superficial look at the subject matter, but it's got such a fantastic and fearless (I know that sounds cliche but it really applies) lead performance by Binoche that I would still recommend it just for her alone.

Robocop did have an element of satire and deliberate cartoonish OTT-ness in its treatment. That said, I would not consider Sanjuro or Hidden Fortress intellectually stimulating, either. They were well-written and superbly directed entertaining audience-pleasers, and there's nothing wrong with that. Don't always believe the booklets, not everything is memorable because it provokes the brain

Full review. Full review.

Have you seen House of Pleausures Coop? I hear its very good, so it's very disappointing that we don't have a BluRay release. It's supposed to be a knockout both visually and sonically.

I disagree. Case in point: Turkish Delight (I bet Pro-B's a fan of that one). It's one of the most intellectually satisfying romance films I have ever seen. It's an absolute punch to the gut aswell. Pure feeling.

If any Paul Verhoeven film gets the upgrade, I hope it's this one (although, I would welcome them all)

I know I know, I'll get to it . Kidding aside, she's quickly become a favorite of mine. She can make an otherwise forgettable film memorable.

I have not seen Pleasures yet, but I've really wanted to for the longest time now..I need to get the DVD soon. I have heard excellent things about it as well, it looks great.
