The PG-13 BD is 151 minutes long, CC DVD version is 153 minutes long and of course has plenty of special features. But PQ and AQ wise...if you enjoyed the film, you'll definitely enjoy the BD.

It's so interesting to read the following old post on the original Criterion "Armageddon" release on michaelbay.com:

With that in mind, of course the next question is imminent. What does Michael Bay think about the fact that neither Buena Vista nor Criterion are using DVD’s anamorphic capabilities to pay tribute to the medium’s superior quality? “I didn’t really think about that”, he replies, completely surprised. “I always thought they were using the highest quality possible.” After telling him about people’s complaints that some studios simply ignore DVD’s increased definition capabilities he is quick to add, “I will definitely ask [Disney and Criterion] to stay state of the art.”

Bay was especially surprised to hear that Criterion have lost much of their reputation in the DVD ranks due to the fact that they ignore people’s comments and do not utilize DVD’s capabilities to its maximum. “I love Criterion for what they did. The Laserdiscs they produce are just fabulous. They have redefined the term home video. I wonder what’s happening with their DVDs. I know they had some problems with a telecine guy at Sony putting out shoddy transfers, but I think that problem is solved.”

To a small degree Bay is even taking Special Editions into consideration when shooting his films. “The Criterion version of ‘Armageddon’ will contain about 5 minutes of extra footage. I usually shoot more funny and comic scenes than I will use, especially when we’re ahead of schedule. When you shoot a film you don’t always know what works or not, but either way, you can always use it for a Special Edition of the film,” he concludes. Michael Bay, a long time Laserdisc collector and DVD fan, clearly shows that he is a strong supporter of home video formats. His films are perfect showcases for the capabilities of DVD with their stunning use of color, the fast paced editing style and the bombastic sounds supporting the images. No matter what it will be, we are looking forward to Michael Bay’s next film.

Looking at my Criterion DVD release and yeah, it's standard definition. Comparing some shots and man, the Blu-ray release just looks and sounds fantastic over its DVD counterparts. Too bad the special features on the CC release is not included on the Touchstone/Disney Blu-ray release but nevertheless, if you enjoyed the film, the BD version is so worth it!

Was going through my early Criterion DVD releases and noticed that a lot of those earlier DVD releases were all SDH, was going through title by title to when I would see "widescreen" and found "Chasing Amy" #75 (I know the re-releases ala "Amacord" #4 and "High and Low" #24 were in widescreen). Curious what title was it when Criterion started going anamorphic.

Stopped by my local Best Buy last night to see if they had put out Vivre sa Vie early. No luck. Knowing this BB, it will hit the shelf the week after the street date.

Wings of Desire wasn't panned by most critics nor did it have a McDonald's toy tie-in.

Yeah I checked one of my locations and they didnt put them out yet. I may try another location this weekend.

When they put out Days of Heaven, Yojimbo/Sanjuro set, and Bigger than Life those were out 8 days early.

I really want Vivre Sa Vie badly.

Someone from one of the companies involved said, "Hey, I think it'd be a good idea to have "Armageddon" as part of The Criterion Collection. It'll be good business for all parties involved." End of discussion.

The first anamorphic widescreen release was Spine #47, Insomnia, which ironically, is a Swedish telefilm.

Have you no patience, PP? It's release date is less than a week away. I think you can make it. My copy is in the process of being shipped from Criterion today, so I expect it to arrive by Tuesday.

What a great month
Is there still hope that they might add the Blu-Ray version of "The Only Son" and "There Was a Father"?
They did it last month and I would really love to see some Ozu on Blu

Maybe, but I know a lot of Ozu isn't ready for HD yet, hence the BFI dual-format editions coming in July where the three "bonus" films are in SD PAL.

Only 3 releases so far....poo.
