I ended up opting for MOC's release of La notte instead of waiting for Criterion at the end of this month. If the reviews tend to lean towards the Criterion titles and the few supplements are worth anything, I may end up grabbing that one as well. That said, with L'avventura and L'eclisse showing up yesterday, I think I will spend my day off tomorrow going through the whole trilogy.

I stuck four titles in my cart last night, knowing I wasn't going to get them but, just to see what they totaled out to. Today they still show the 50% off prices even when I hit update cart. I'm too much of a coward to hit place your order since my wife said "only two!"

Plus, I received L'avventura and L'eclisse today (neither the Criterion release, but Criterion titles nonetheless). I think I'm saving them both for my day off on Thursday.
Thanks for the heads up on the early criterion shipping from Import Cds. I made the same order as you after I read your post last night and they already shipped. Seems like an affordable place for Canadian criterion collectors and they had I Married a Witch for a great price.

Best case scenario-4 titles=$85=I'm Dead!
Worst case scenario-4 titles=$170= I'm Dead; Twice!!

Maybe I'll just use the "Old married man's philosophy"-"it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission."

I just finished watching The Exorcist for the first time in a decade or so, since the Blu-ray (2010 digibook) showed up in the mail today. It's fun to see a bunch of Criterion heavyweights in the same film. Max von Sydow (several Bergman films), Ellen Butstyn (The Last Picture Show), and Lee J Cobb (12 Angry Men, On the Waterfront).

While I personally think that The Exorcist is overrated as a horror film, and that it is nowhere close to being the scariest movie ever made, as many fans proclaim, I have long been a fan of the sheer brilliance of the actors at hand, and of the more subtle ways that this movie induces dread.

In an odd way, The Exorcist would make an interesting double feature with Bergman's The Seventh Seal, and not just because of Max von Sydow. I like the way that both films examine possibilities beyond the scope of our physical world,

I worked in Georgetown for a few years and I can say looking down those stairs for the first time was scarier than anything in the movie!

This is my first time ordering from Criterion's website and I'm still waiting on my shipping confirmation. Is the order they get to them pretty random? Because I see some people that definitely ordered after I did getting their confirmations.
I'm certain they haven't forgotten you.

I think you will be more than satisfied. Next sale I'll probably pick up the three Hitchcock flicks for my Blu Ray collection. They honestly slipped my mind this time around.

I've been using them for a while now. Their shipping has become a lot more prompt in the last couple months as well. I typically use them for films that fall between sale times (I used ImportCDs for Seconds and The Earrings of Madame De... in August). I was surprised that they are shipping my latest order out in two shipments. I've rarely seen an American based company do that with Canadian customers.

Was there ever any more talk about why there so low (or no) stock of The 400 Blows at places like Amazon or B&N any more?

LOL! Okay I think I'll just have to rent these and find out if they're worth it. It's hard to blind buy because it has to have rewatch value to enter my collection.

The Exorcist is one of my favorite movies of all time, and while I don't think it is the scariest movie ever made (I don't even know what that would be), I do think that it deals with some of the scariest and unsettling concepts: the corruption by evil of the most pure and innocent among us, the guilt that comes with not meeting expectations, our own inabilities to protect those we love, etc. Plus, it is just a well made film, that manages to maintain a sense of unease throughout.

I like your analysis, and that reflects a lot of how I feel about the film. The subtle aspects of the movie, including the concepts that you mentioned above, are far more unnerving to me than the outright visceral horror scenes.

I admit to being at an extreme disadvantage with regard to this film, because some friends and I saw the Leslie Nielsen spoof, Repossessed, upon its release during our freshman year in college, and I did not see The Exorcist until after that. Sad as it seems, this order of cinematic experiences is why a lot of the horror aspects of The Exorcist are lost on me.

I love how 1970s movies were so adept at generating unease. The eerie everyday city streets scenes in movies like Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), The Exorcist, and Marathon Man had an creepy undercurrent to them like nothing else since.

...and this reminds me that I still need to write a review of the Marathon Man Blu-ray, which I thought was spectacular.
