Another one I just read about, any user reviews on Revanche?? The art work and trailer look great.
I was going to watch Revanche (again) the other night but instead watched a different Criterion film (Metropolitan). I absolutely was hooked on Revanche though. It's totally absorbing and I'm glad I rented it first before I bought it. It was unexpected in terms of a storyline and the acting was superb. It was also very sad at times too though. If I were you, I'd check this out immediately. Even a blind buy might be worth it.

I watched Whit Stillman's Metropolitan for the 2nd time last night. Does anyone here love it or hate it? I am neither, but I do think it has quite a bit of wit and superb dialogue, even though it all may sound unrealistic at times. I think the production/cinematography is some of the worst I've ever seen in filmmaking, but then again this was a very low budget film. I can see how this movie is an "acquired taste" because of the (pretentious/intellectual/ snobby) characters... I think only middle to upper class audiences could appreciate a film like this because working or lower class film viewers would interpret this film as annoying or confusing. Some may even see it as "total crap". But I actually think otherwise. I think this film is brilliantly scripted. Whit sure has wit, and that can be a hit!

Oh, and I bet the characters in this movie probably enjoy leafing through the J. Peterman catalog (if anyone knows what that is) because of the pseudo-intellectuallism inherent in their lives. It's all so phony and pretentious, but its a bit of a guilty pleasure for me watching this film. Woody Allen probably enjoyed watching that film too (as well as Noah Baumbach).

How is Metropolitan compared to TLDOD?

That was about 2 years ago and I just haven't gotten around to returning to it yet.
I'm surprised I didn't turn it off lol.

Also to the guy asking about Revanche, it is a masterpiece. Buy, buy, buy, buy!

I'm about to watch The Last Days of Disco in the next few days so I cannot tell you my thoughts on that as of yet. The Criterion Blu-ray only got 3 stars (out of 5) for picture quality as it has a number of issues...but Metropolitan earned 4 out of 5 for PQ maybe because of a better/more consistent transfer. That is one of the major factors as to why I haven't bought TLDOD (because of the BD review on this site).

I have a feeling I will like it. Again, it seems like Stillman's films are an acquired taste, so somehow I've been able to understand his vision/style. I will be sure to post my thoughts on this thread after I see the movie (I ordered the DVD through my library system).

Happy Together is probably my favorite WKW film, followed by Chungking Express and Days of Being Wild. I also love Christopher Doyle's work in these films, amazing cinematographer.

Leaving out a few big anachronisms, Last Days of Disco is a very engaging film. I think you will enjoy it, just don't go in expecting Saturdau Night Fever.

I've just read Svet's review of the new Eyes without a Face BD, and am not 100% agreeing with him on the source.

The Gaumont BD is missing a scene, which was present on the Criterion DVD and is again present on the Criterion BD, so I have a hard time believing Criterion used the same master than Gaumont (or they tweaked it to reintroduce the missing scene ?).

Also not impressed with the special features selection. Pretty light weight. I'll still grab it but I kinda hope Arrow Academy release it with more features.

I'd like to thank those of you who recommended some edgy, harsh noir and b-movies for me. They all sound top notch.

On Dangerous Ground was a good one. And I'm in full agreement there, Robert Ryan kicks ass!
Haven't seen The Set Up yet (or Nightmare Alley for that matter). Part of me wants to say theres almost too much noir to check out, but I really don't think there is such a thing

Once you see the main menu on that BD, you'll know already you didn't waste your money. And oh, please oh please watch Chungking Express asap! It is OOP but that doesn't mean it is supposed to remain sealed in that shrinkwrap! Break that one out and enjoy!
I love the UK, the 70s, and rock and roll. Does it have The Rolling Stones?

And as for Chungking Express, it's not sealed (if you read my earlier posts, I bought the digipack three weeks ago at FYE for $14.00 mint condition with slipcover). I'm not one of those dumb future scalpers. I mostly bought it because of the caps on this site. The cinematography looks beautiful.

I'll (finally) be picking the Criterion blu up in this sale.
I LOVED Gomorra! I really liked the starkness of it. It was very good, and the soundtrack was pretty interesting. I loved it and it's packaging design as well.

If that's the case, then I'll probably love Nashville. Shelley Duvall is in it, whom I love. So I'm excited to get that on my birthday.

Oh, I will not expect anything like that whatsoever! I'm starting to think of that really bad 90s movie A Night at the Roxbury whenever I think of Last Days of Disco. Ironically, it came out the same year (1998) too.

Nope, no Stones in that one. But Gimme Shelter is the one you want if you want the Rolling Stones. Great Criterion edition too I must say. The Who and Roger/Pete rocked.

I can't wait to hear what you thought of Chungking after you watch it. I have a feeling you're going to approve of it.

Just finished watching one of the most awesome documentaries in recent memory, Searching for Sugar Man. WOW! I even shed a tear or two (or more or less my eyes got watery).

Now THAT is how a documentary film is supposed to look and feel.

Seeing as though it's a film based on a The Who album....no.
