I ordered BFI's "Journey to Italy," because the other two movies in Criterion's set aren't that great.

No, retail is $29.99 on the DVD editions, so $14.99 in sale (some are down to $9.99).

Unfortunately, the rights are with Warner, so it's unlikely that Criterion will be able to release a BD. But that's OK. Given the response to the film, I'm fairly certain that Warner will give the BD "the Criterion treatment".

It was worth it to me although it is a blind buy. I'm a fan of both actress and director so my answer to your question is I think the set is worth it, because I can't imagine any brand new sealed 3-film criterion set being much lower than $33.99. The remaining Bergman films you still need to collect will be at the same price the next sale.

Said I was going to keep calm and not get too carried away with this sale...

Already ordered Eyes Without A Face and Frances Ha, and currently have The Ice Storm, Godzilla, Ivan's Childhood, To Be Or Not To Be, Naked and Yojimbo sitting in my basket...

Oh dear, this is going to be an expensive month!

Who do you like better, Ingrid or Ingmar? Go with that.

EDIT: Only because the person to whom you responded was talking about Ingrid, and you mentioned Ingmar.

Well, if you like Ingmar, scrap the Ingrid set and get all of the rest of the few Ingmar discs that you're lacking.

Some (or one) of his movies star her, so its a win win!

Actually, there is "a single Katherine Hepburn release from Criterion", unless you're restricting it to Blu-rays. The film she did with David Lean, Summertime (which should get a Blu upgrade, dammit) came out from them on LD and DVD.

Oh, and Adam's Rib was released on LD.

The problem is that the vast bulk of her films came out from RKO and MGM, which means they're owned by Warner, who doesn't license their titles out, either to Criterion or to anyone else.

There are titles from other studios that Criterion could theoretically license, but they aren't in general (in my opinion) among her top rank films.

But...perhaps because Warner owns the bulk of her films, and they're slow to get their vast catalog titles out on Blu, only a small number of her films (four, by my count) are currently on Blu-ray, which is a shame.

Sitting in my bag are The Lady Vanishes, The Magician, and The Uninvited; unfortunately, I have to wait until the 15th because that's when I get paid next.

Don't spread this around, but I hear that she used to sleep with that director.

I might have to sit this sale out. Too much other stuff I need to allocate my money to this month.

I think we're more likely to get the Argo treatment.

Like I say with every sale, I'll probably pick up some Eclipse sets. It more than likely won't happen.

And that's bad because...?

I'm not as big on Argo as a lot of people, but I thought they did a great job with the Blu-ray release. Hell, I found the extras more interesting than the movie.
