Here is my review of Blue is the Warmest Color.

I could have written an even longer take on this film, but I'm quite sleepy after coming home from the indie theater in the city.

I will likely be waiting for the special edition of this movie to be released by Criterion, but I do expect that it will look absolutely brilliant on Blu-ray. The photography is colorful and engaging in a way that outdistances most contemporary works.

I'll probably wait until the next sale between the Criterion sale and the Olive titles I've got coming from ImportCDs and the fact TCM has been playing so many amazing films as of late I wouldn't have time to dig into it anyway. Although once I see everyone on here gushing about it and posting pictures, I might cave in.

I notice that the DVD of Buñuel's The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoise is OOP and has been for quite some time. Have they lost the rights to it or something?

If they ever were to release it on Blu-ray / regain the rights, would there be a good chance of including Un Chien Andalou in the extras?

They lost the rights years ago pretty sure. Pretty sure this was one of the first instances of Studio Canal's tyranny that has ramped up in recent years.

Still waiting for the blu-ray upgrades of Fassbinder BRD trilogy, Bergman's trilogy and Dreyer box sets, c'mon Criterion!

A Lionsgate Blu-ray is/was available from B&N for 50% off. A 20% off snail mail coupon also worked for me, online. $$12-something with free shipping. No Un Chien Andalou with it.

There's no Lionsgate Blu-ray release of The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, though there is apparently a Canadian Blu-ray from Alliance.

Perhaps you're thinking of another Buñuel film with a long title: That Obscure Object of Desire, which does have a Lionsgate/StudioCanal Blu-ray release.

So, it only cost me $25 more to upgrade from the 11" to the 13" screen. Score!
Keep checking best buy (and amazon and a few other (online/local) stores they price match) for next couple weeks to see if there are any further price drops you can price match against your new buy price. Same goes for media, just got back $5 for two blus I bought there on the 8th, price matched to amazon.

Has anyone heard if Barnes and Noble is extending the 50% off Criterion Collection sale? Last year, they extended the sale one extra week. If they do the same this year, I will be able to purchase Nashville.

There currently is a region-free BFI edition of L'Age D'or that has Un Chien Andolou as a double feature. You can purchase it through Amazon-UK for a reasonable price.

With the exception of the Canadian version of The Discreet Charm of the Bougeoise, I have all of Bunuel's films transferred to blu-ray. Los Olvidados and Viridiana are on my wish list.

I will add that, aside from the inevitable comparisons to The 400 Blows, Blue is the Warmest Color throws another bone to the Criterion crowd by way of a party scene where Pandora's Box is showing on a background screen. It's a beautifully-timed film reference.
We've got to have Pandora's Box upgraded. Make it happen, Criterion.

Unrelated, but also on the Criterion front, I'm about to find out how The Most Dangerous Game looks on Blu-ray, by way of the Flicker Alley release. I'm going to watch Gow, the Headhunter first, though, because I've never seen it before.

I actually do own the BFI release. It is probably one of the nicest restorations that I have seen for such an old pair of works.

I watched it last night and while I wasn't head over heels for L'Age d'Or, I really enjoyed Un Chien Andalou. Being that it is such a short film, I don't see why Criterion should not include it with the Blu-ray release of any of his other works in the near future.

Probably unlikely. Last year's extention had more to do with the hurricane and ensuing outages and logistics than driving extra sales. This year's was already slightly longer than usual.

When I asked The lady at my local BN if the sale was ending, she told me the sale was extended until December 2nd. I thought it ended yesterday the 23rd.

It extends long enough for me to get paid again, allowing me to use a 20% coupon to get the John Cassavetes box set.

i'm hoping to pick it up during the 50% off sale in conjunction with a 40% off coupon for black friday. we'll see if my cashier buddy will be willing to hook it up. that'd put the price ~$60 if you're a member.

Damn... Didn't even think about that! I wish I got paid again before Black Friday. Good luck with the hook up! Hope it works out!

I wish. That's my most wanted title (not including Fantastic Mr. Fox). I wish more Shelley Duvall was released.

But no. They extended it last year because of the hurricane. Either that, or the fact that they actually sell more media during this sale than any other. And this sale, they made it a whole month as opposed to two weeks. So I highly doubt it.

What 40% off coupon?

By the way, I'm sure this was answered or brought up before, but did The Criterion Collection stop issuing Blu-rays in the regular cases? I've noticed that a lot of new releases are being released in the Digipack format. It's cool, but it's also slightly annoying since the booklets don't stay in place.

Question guys ....

I bought a bunch of CC discs this sale. One of them was Anatomy of a Murder. I usually not one to not pick, but the accompanying booklet had damaged edges ... It almost appeared used. will criterion replace this for me ?
