Generally, you can't use the coupons online to buy items that are already on sale. The coupon code only applies for full-price items. In store, they'll usually let you use the coupon for anything.

I noticed last night that in Buffalo 66, Christina Ricci's car has an OZU license plate, with a couple of numbers before it. Doubt it's a coincidence, but who knows. Only thought the film was pretty good first time around, but really got into it last night. The Japanese BD looks insanely good, no way the US will match it, but extras and price are a factor. Hope to hear about the extras so I might not need to double dip.
Ozu is also one of those directors I don't think I can watch more than once every 20 years, really moving. Wish I could afford to upgrade to bluray, but most of them didn't strike me as so visually oriented. I might feel different seeing them in HD.

Ironically a friend I know just told me all about how high the taxes are in Europe. 20% is a lot! One helluva markup in general. I guess though that it adds to the quality of life over there and I wouldn't mind paying high taxes if I have access to high quality bicycle lanes, clean(er) air and healthier amenities for all the things I buy at the store. Do I sound naive, Mansinthe? Or perhaps its not as good over there in Europe as I assume? (I've only been to France and that was when I was 9 years old, back in the 1980s).

I bought the Japanese blu-ray of Buffalo '66 about a year ago. I loved the transfer and now I saw that the U.S. version is coming out in January. Should I double dip? Maybe, since the Japanese blu-ray has no bonus features other than a couple of trailers.

I'm looking forward to watching that Ozu movie, Tokyo Story, though.

Does anyone know if Criterion still hold the rights for Basil Dearden's All Night Long? They released it on DVD, which is now rare and OOP.

If they do, any news of it coming out on Blu-ray?

I don't know why, but I have done a bit of a 180 in regards to Heavens Gate. I had no interest at all in seeing it but now, for some reason, I kind of can't get the screenshots out of my head. I'm still not sure the actual story or execution will be to my tastes but it just looks so darn beautiful.

guess it depends on what's in the bonus features. If it's just interviews and commentaries I hope to eak out the interesting info from other fans, but interesting deleted scenes could persuade me. I liked this film so much more than the first time around, it makes me want a blu-ray of the much knocked Brown Bunny, as I didn't hate that one either, but can't remember much but the mood of it and money shot.

I actually still remember seeing the movie in a little arthouse theater here when it was released. I remember that experience alone more than anything else in that movie, The Brown Bunny. You should have heard the deafening silence in the theater when the money shot in the end came on screen. It was uncanny.

Looking forward to Buffalo 66 and if there will be any supplements. Man, this film could have been perfect in the Criterion Collection though.

It was never available on DVD by itself, but only as part of the Eclipse set Basil Dearden's London Underground, which is still in print. It's available from the Criterion Store, and for 40% off from Amazon, if you can't find it at B&N for 50% off.

Honestly, I can't believe in US they don't calculate the tax before listing a price - I remember when I was last there you'd go into a McDonalds which would list something under the "$1 menu" and you'd go to pay with a one dollar note and be rebuffed, because that didn't count tax. That to me is lunacy at best, and deceitful/false marketing at worst. But then again, 4% is very low (it's 10% here).

Thanks. I waited to see if there would be a blu-ray release of this cracking 4-film set from the Criterion Collection but so far no sign. I want the films and so have decided to buy the Criterion/Eclipse DVD set, which is still available at a reasonable price. But there appear to be 2 different versions - a more comon purple covered one and a rarer one with a blue cover. I am unable fo find the difference in specs (if any) but before I buy, I want to check if they are similar or if there is a difference.

Generally speaking, it's not likely that any of the Eclipse sets will get a Blu-ray upgrade, though I suppose it's not beyond the realm of possibility that an individual film will get an upgrade. I wouldn't count on it, though.

I've never heard of a variant edition of it. The only one I know of is the "purple" one, which is what can be seen at criterion.com and Amazon. If you've seen a photo of it with a blue cover, perhaps it's just a bad photo with a color shift. Even if it's a legitimate cover variant, I'd be very surprised if there's any difference in contents.

I would be very, very receptive to a Blu-ray upgrade of My Man Godfrey.

I watched it last night via my DVR recording and I absolutely loved it. One of the best "feel good" films that I've probably ever seen.

Yes, it's annoying even for those who have grown up with it! Here in Canada, we have the same thing. Taxes are not included in the original price. The entire country charges 5% GST on pretty much everything, and on top of that most provinces charge a PST or an HST as well which varies from province to province (where I live it's another 5%), except for oil-rich Alberta which can afford not to charge that. Some things are PST exempt but not movies
