Of his 2 Criterion films I have only watched The Ruling Class. It wasn't my cup of tea (as we English say) but I thought he played the role extremely well.

I assume you've seen Lawrence of Arabia... yes?

To my eternal shame, no I had the chance to watch it last year at a cinema but turned it down. I will have to rectify that mistake very soon.

Oh man, you've got to get on that. I caught that restoration last year and was blown away. I had seen it before, but the big screen made it feel like a completely new experience.

Check out the Blu as soon as you can. It's a must for any cinephile. You're in for a real treat.

That's three Criterion films. They released Lawrence of Arabia on laserdisc.

But "completely unexpected"? Given his hard living, it's amazing he made it this long.

Whoa ... Man am I jealous of you ... One of the most awesome things I have seen on the big screen. I got to see it at the Zeigfeld in NYC ... Stunned was how I left. Every frame was beautifully shot.

Your review of The Past seems pretty spot on. A few too many red herrings and way too many twists in serve for characterization. It's a step down from A Separation, certainly, but that was to be expected. The acting is uniformly excellent and it's always engaging.

watched oblivion today for the very first time with my girlfriend.., i liked the movie, it was a great popcorn flick but the first scene they showed in b/w made me thing about la jetee (1963)

and how much more intense this short film was compared to oblivion.

RIP. I should revisit my Lawrence of Arabia Blu-ray soon. I saw the movie for the first time only last year, but I'm glad that I waited until the Blu-ray for the first viewing. I'd love to see it on a big screen someday.

I loved Oblivion on the big screen without shame or irony, and I also love my Blu-ray copy. It's not the most original flick in the world, but it's great eye candy.

Whilst I would love to take credit, CineScope is not me but someone I know I have seen neither film yet.

Ha, ha, Casino Royale!

Sad to hear of his passing, he was the last of that group of hard-drinking British actors of the 60s like Burton, Harris, Reed. He made many great films but Lawrence is definitely what he'll be remembered for.

You have your holiday assignment now

There's a great chance Lawrence in 4K (or 70mm if you live in LA or NY) will screen again in the near future. Sony is going to get their money's worth on the impeccable restoration they did on the film.

I am going to hunt it down on the big screen. Failing that I will watch on my BIG tv at home. I shall report back in due course.

I had the fortune of seeing Robert Harris's 1989 restoration on the big screen at the Charles Cinema in Boston.➊ Went the first day, on a Wednesday afternoon, and the showing was sold out. Absolutely astonishing picture and audio. Saw it a few months later on the Coolidge Corner big screen (bigger screen than the Charles, but a lesser sound system). Saw the current restoration in October as a Fathom Events showing at a local theater. Just amazing.

It's one of a handful of motion pictures that, while looking great on a good home theater system, just takes your breath away when projected on a giant screen in a great theater.

➊ For those who don't know the Charles...to paraphrase a friend of mine, when God was in Boston (which is, like, all the time, because He's omnipresent) that's where he went to see movies. Too bad it's no longer around.

I'm jealous of you seeing it at the Ziegfeld, that must of been awesome! My dad took me there a few times, mostly saw duds, but what an incredible theater. He still to this day raves about seeing 2001 and Apocalypse Now there.. Cheers to Mr. O'toole!
