As others have said, there are still a few of the old greats around. Lauren Bacall is another that hasn't been mentioned! She's apparently doing a guest spot in Family Guy this season lol. But it's always sad when the greats pass on, and for two in one day like this? Tragic...
Love when they come out of hiding and do a great job ... Remember Bacall in Misery !?

I love this movie; even went from Egypt to Aqaba once to see where that great battle sequence happened (imagine how disappointed I was to find out it was filmed in southern Spain).

I catch Lawrence on the big screen every time I can. Last summer, the new print was shown at our Fox theater, with all its late 20s Egypto-Arab decor. Major fun. If I were voting in Sight and Sound, it would be by my #1 movie. Spectacle, character, story.....it's got it all.

I liked it, too. It seemed like a small-budget concept, like Moon or Gattaca, with a big budget. A lot of the summer's sci-fi seemed too big for its britches (Pacific Rim, Ender's Game). Oblivion seemed just right.

Bacall is great because she's really proud of being part of old Hollywood and her memory is still very good.

Sad to hear Joan Fontaine is gone. I take it she passed without ever patching things up with her sister?

Fontaine was an excellent actress and very lovely. From what I've read Hitch and Alma were very fond of her.

I'm truly saddened by the news of Joan Fontaine's death, as I'm a huge fan of her work in the Hitchcock movies and in the 1943 version of Jane Eyre, which I recently enjoyed via the Twilight Time Blu-ray.

This timing is uncanny, because I just finished watching The Dark Mirror, featuring Fontaine's sister, Olivia de Havilland.

Fontaine is incredible in Letter From an Unknown Woman which is probably my favourite movie from the 1940s. She does an absolutely incredible job in it as well. I should probably get the blu (I think its from Olive?). For that alone she has contributed to art of cinema immensely. Interestingly, she's the only actor to win an Oscar for a performance in a Hitchcock film.

I've never seen Letter from an Unknown Woman, but I have always heard great things, so I decided to place an order for it. I've been enjoying the Olive Films selections a lot lately, and this is a good time to see this particular title.

Tonight I watched my second film from the 4 By Agnes Varda set, Le bonheur. After watching Godard's Une femme mariee on Tuesday, I think this makes for a fantastic, contrasting companion. While Godard's film looks at adultery in an intimate and frequently erotic sense, Varda creates a dream-like, near utopian world where infidelity is seemingly accepted when the idea of "love" comes into play. What I found most fascinating about the film, other than the marvelous color scheme that helps promote the dream-like state of the film, is the final act twist, which is really more a bursting dose of tragic realism that crushes the airy atmosphere of the film and turn the final 10 minutes into something else entirely. The Varda set is at 2 for 2 with me so far and I look forward to La pointe courte and Vagabond. I would be 100% on board with Criterion upgrading this in 2014.

Fontaine also starred in Rebecca, Suspicion, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Tender is the Night, Ivanhoe, Gunga Din, Frenchman's Creek, and many others. Her real name was Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland. One of my favorite actresses. So sad that the Golden Age stars are nearly all gone.

Thanks for the recommendation! I also ordered the book, Dark City: The Lost World of Film Noir by Eddie Muller, after a friend recommended it to me at a party last night. I've been delving a lot farther into this genre than ever before this year now that so many of these films are available in high definition, so I am looking forward to a good read on the subject.
(The Charleton Heston film from which the book draws its title is another impressive Olive Films release.)

The UK version is in my Amazon UK cart in case it isn't. I've waited long enough to see this again!

It's one of the films that I've wanted to see the most this year.

The lack of any release thus far, the IFC rights, and the director strongly indicates a Criterion release within the next couple of months.

I hope the titles announced are as interested as the ones announced last month.

If Criterion doesn't release at least one David Lynch film in the next few months, I'm going to write them a letter that starts with "Dear Jerks..."

Well, off to snuggle all warm in my bed while visions of my new boss's sexy blonde wife and a shootout in a hall of mirrors dance in my head.

(i would pay serious money to have shit like that dance in my head while asleep. i mean, how seriously cool would that be)
