I don't have a complete collection, and doubt I ever will unless I win a Powerball jackpot. I have about two-thirds of the LDs they released, about one-third of the DVDs they released up to the point where they started issuing the titles on both DVD and BD, and about one-fifth of their Blu-ray releases.

It's a shame, too, as it has a good cast: Scott Glenn, Gabriel Byrne, Ian McKellan, and Jürgen Prochnow.

Lol. Just when you try to forget about Criterions, there's a new sale around the corner. #Winning

Thank you ... I've been wondering if/when B&N would be having this sale. I'm assuming this is for all blurays ... not just Criterion?

I have not. If I recall correctly, SimBelm was comparing that one favorably to Lost in Translation.

Frankly, Mann has never done much for me. Last film I saw from him was Public Enemies and it wasn't worth writing home about, imo.

I've been an enthusiastic fan of Michael Mann since my middle school days, when I was hooked to his Miami Vice TV series. It's still my second favorite television show of all time, behind The Twilight Zone.

My favorite Michael Mann directorial effort is Heat, and I've had a hankering to revisit the Blu-ray yet again now that I'm about to wrap up my film noir marathon.

Public Enemies was not Mann's finest hour, but it's a solid good flick that I've been meaning to revisit.

I'm going to visit Barnes & Noble today, in light of their B2G1 sale, and Mann's Miami Vice feature film is one of the candidates. I've been wanting to see that movie again for quite some time now, and I know that it'll look and sound beautiful in high definition. The unrated cut of that movie for the win, since it captures the spirit of the television show more effectively.
EDIT: Nevermind... I just realized that the B&N B2G1 sale extends through January 24, so I'll wait for Rififi and Thief to come out.

Hey Owl. I hope you check out some of Ignatiy Vishnevetsky's MUBI.com writing on Public Enemies. He never wrote a formal review, per se, but he still makes the best case for it as a great film.

Oh yeah, and purchasing Miami Vice on BluRay will be the single greatest decision you make this year (I know it was for me the year I purchased it)

Arthur Penn's Bonnie and Clyde is sitting in my stack of recent Blu-ray purchases waiting to be watched. I predict that the urge to revisit Public Enemies will hit me in a big way after I watch Bonnie and Clyde, although I'll probably rent it instead of outright buying it. It's one of the Mann films that I liked a lot, but did not love.

Not to derail the thread, but Public Enemies' genius lies in the decision to shoot on low quality consumer-grade digital video. Mann is bringing the events to us, in a medium that is very familiar to us. When you compound this with his striking attention to historical detail (many of the scenes were shot where they occurred in real life), the impression of verisimilitude is overwhelming. I was astounded by it the last time I saw it!

The Pier Paolo Pasolini retrospective that I mentioned in my September-October Cinema Talk is now upon us, and I’m happy to report that we will be showing the two key films in the series that I feared would be too expensive for us: Teorema and Pigsty. The films are still expensive, maybe too expensive (as is the whole series, for that matter), but I am proceeding in the hope that we will be able to cover costs. Film series like this (i.e., near-complete retrospectives of major film artists, consisting of new 35mm copies printed from the best-available elements) don’t come around often, so when they do, we want to show them—even if it threatens to break the bank. The films in this retrospective are costing us two or three times what we normally pay for movies (and we can show each one only one time), so to defray the high costs, we are raising our admission prices for the series. Tickets to the Pasolini films will cost $12, $9 for Cinematheque members, $7 for those age 25 and under. I realize that $12 is a lot of money for a movie ticket in Ohio. But I also think it is a fair price for what people will get.

Moviegoers routinely pay more than that to see first-run 3-D movies, and that $3-$3.50 “surcharge” to rent 3-D glasses that are then returned—I mean “recycled”—isa scam. 3-D movies are shown digitally, so they already enjoy the distribution/projection cost savings that digital pro-vides. The Pasolini films, on the other hand, will be shown in bulky, heavy (but exquisitely beautiful) 35mm film prints—the medium in which they were created. These prints have had to be imported from Italy (and will eventually be returned there) at considerable cost. Circuiting them from theatre to theatre around North America is also not cheap. And projecting 35mm movies is not just a matter of pushing keys or buttons from the lobby or a remote location. A trained opera-tor has to be present in the booth at all screenings to unpack, inspect, and run the movies, and two projectors are required to show these special prints. Projecting film is always more labor-intensive and ex-pensive than showing digital.

Perhaps we should start charging a $1-$3 “35mm surcharge” for every movie we show from celluloid! It certainly makes more sense than a 3-D surcharge. But getting back to the Pasolini price, $12 is way cheaper than tickets to concerts, plays, or performances—even those shown in HD at movie theatres. And these Pasolini film classics are no less special than “live” events. Since Cinematheque members will pay only $9 to see these movies (a $3 savings instead of the usual $2), maybe now is the time for non-members to join. A 12-month, 365-day Cinematheque membership is still one of the best bargains in town, costing only $35 ($20 if you’re 65 or older or a student). Membership entitles you to a discount to any film we show (not just the Pasolini programs) and you would also start receiving this calendar in the mail. At any rate, I hope filmgoers will understand the need to charge more for this special series. Its success will help guarantee more retrospectives like it in the future.

Luckily for me, I go to school right next door. I guess that it is about time that I bought a membership to the Cinematheque.

Nice to know that I'm not the only one. The only film of his that I have any desire to have in my collection is the "cuckoo": The Last of the Mohicans.

I would love to see a Blu-ray release of Mann's supernatural film The Keep. It was one of my favorite flicks when I was a kid.

I have seen Museum Hours. Whilst it was not as good as I had hoped it was still a pleasant experience. I gave it 7/10.

Thanks. I have a small wish list of non-Criterions left over from the holidays I'd like to check out.

To keep this post Criterion-related, the last Criterion I watched was Frances Ha. I bought it as a blind buy, as the "free" BD (to my paid for BD) in B&N's last B1G1 sale a few weeks ago. I picked it because I was looking for something a little on the lighter side for a change. I was a little worried going in, that it might be a little too much of a chick-flick kind of movie. After seeing it, I'm still not sure (haha), but I thought it was good. I enjoyed it.
