Hunch Alert: The Remains of the Day will be announced tomorrow.

Over the past few months I've turned off DVRed copies of The Swimmer, The Time Machine, Un Flic and (most recently) The Remains of the Day because I couldn't shake the idea that even a decent BD could look so much better.

The Swimmer and The Time Machine have already gotten announcements so who knows, maybe I have other-worldy powers of some sort or another. The Remains of the Day has also been sitting on my Amazon.uk list for a while and Criterion has been tearing through that lately.

On the Fritz Lang front I would love The Lady in the Window. If I weren't region free I might maybe nudge the Mabuse films to the front but it would still be a really close call.

What else...I think we might finally see In a Lonely Place soon.

TCM is releasing The Lady From Shanghai which makes me think they might have the inside track on Gilda too. And since it's hard to imagine Criterion not getting at least one of the three...

I watched Fritz Lang's The Woman in the Window last month, via streaming video, since it's a public domain film. It's a great little flick, and, in a few ways, I even preferred it to Scarlet Street. As in Scarlet Street, Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett, and Dan Duryea make for a great cast.

Joan Bennett physically resembles the currently-famous singer, Katy Perry, in these movies, and I could not get that out of my head while I was watching them, but they're both amazing classic noir titles.

The video quality of The Woman in the Window that I watched online was superb, so I imagine that it will hit Blu-ray at some point, although it seems better-suited for a Kino release.

It goes without saying that I've got your back when it comes to hoping that Criterion will release In a Lonely Place and Gilda.

Since Gun Crazy was recently released on Blu-ray in France, I'd be happy to see Criterion pick it up on these shores.

I thought The Woman in the Window was public domain too but somebody recently said it was with MGM. I haven't tried to confirm that but it seemed like a credible post (I wish I could credit the poster but it escapes me).

I don't know if that makes a CC release more or less likely but there you go.

I keep holding off importing The Remains of the Day from the UK in hopes of a U.S. release. I'm hoping your hunch is correct. It would either be Criterion or Twilight Time releasing it.

Oh, yes! JotS is a visual delight and Niño Rota's score is so damn catchy that after every viewing I find myself randomly whistling parts of it; even days afterward! Such a colorful movie; a natural for Blu-ray.

I don't have the Rosselini set (yet), so I can't say, but the Lean set is one terrific bunch of films. Brief Encounter is the best of the four, Blithe Spirit the least of them (but still worthwhile).

thanks, everyone, for the input on the Lean collection. If the price is right, I might get it some time. 4 films at $50 or less will bring down my per movie average. :-)

looking forward to tomorrow. Criterion has had something for me each of the 1st three months (Thief, Foreign Correspondent, Persona) can't wait to see if April will bring something fun.

On Fellini, would love Satyricon on Blu. I think it's hard to mount an argument against La Dolce Vita and 8 1/2 as his main achievements, but Satyricon is a personal fave for sure.

But this month, it must be the time for more Antonioni

A kind poster on this thread pointed out to me that a "Used - Like New" copy of the Criterion Blu-ray of The Third Man was available on Amazon for $75.99, which is the lowest price by far that I've seen this title available for a "Used - Like New" copy. After checking the highly favorable transaction reviews for the seller, I pulled the trigger. $79.98 including shipping.

Considering that I bought the StudioCanal Blu-ray of The Third Man two months ago, this is quite a frivolous purchase, and it's the most expensive single-disc Blu-ray that I've ever purchased, even eclipsing the $60 that I paid for a "Like New" Blu-ray of Pierrot Le Fou.

The StudioCanal Blu-ray of The Third Man looks good, but I'll always have that faint yearning when I watch it...sort of like a dry itch at the back of the throat that never goes away.
Sometimes, you just have to scratch that itch.

Hey Pro-B,

I'm loving the Europe '51 poster in your Home Theatre Gallery. I might just have to track this down online. A beautiful poster for a beautiful film.

Upgraded my DVD of The Royal Tenenbaums this weekend from Best Buy for $.76 thanks to price matching and reward zone certs. Would like to see them upgrade A Life Aquatic so they'd all be on Blu-Ray but it'll happen sooner or later.

Hello Owl. How have you been

I have purchased some reproductions of original Italian and French posters (mostly Italian as Italian cinema is my favorite) for some of my favorite films from two different places, one in Philadelphia and one in Milan. There are also a couple of very serious collectors in New York who sell original posters, but I cannot afford them.

If you are interested in the Bergman poster, you should probably look around for a reproduction. There are some that are of exceptionally high quality.

I hope you are well, Owl

All is well in my world. Thanks!

I have no need for an original print of the poster, and I'm more than happy to go with an inexpensive reproduction, so I'll trek around online later on. Ever so often, I stumble across places in Atlanta that sell cool reproduction movie posters.

I'll have to watch my copy again soon. It was among the first the or so Criterions I picked up (for original price), but it really didn't do anything for me when I watched it. I have no shame it admitting that I really didn't know how to intelligently watch films several years ago and I think I needed to cleanse my pallet of Hollywood junk before appreciating art films fully.

It took me a couple of times watching my old Criterion DVD of The Third Man for the film to sink in. The zither music in the score caught me off guard the first time, and it just did not make any sense to me in context to the story. These days, I love the music choice, just as I love the offbeat carnival-esque music of Eyes Without a Face, but it's definitely uncanny at first.

I was a regular poster on another forum many years ago when I first saw The Third Man, and I remember posting something to the effect of "I like the second half of this film a lot because it reminds me of a Tim Burton movie."
*shudders*
I'm somewhat embarrassed by that comment in retrospect, but it also makes me laugh. I've always been sort of a village idiot when it comes to evaluating movies.
